ABOUT THE FACILITATOR

Anika Carpenter is a flash fiction author, workshop facilitator and artist with a background in the Fine Arts. Her fiction has been shortlisted for the Bath Flash Fiction Award and the Bridport Prize and has been published in numerous anthologies. You can find her stories at Gone Lawn, Ellipsis Zine, The Molotov Cocktail, Janus Literary and many more.

Anika received a Fine Art MA (distinction) with a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from Kingston University in 2010. She spent ten years working as an assistant to Turner Prize winning artists. Anika's own artwork has been exhibited at Towner Gallery and featured in numerous group exhibitions. She is the co-founder of Accident & Emergence (currently on hiatus) an artist-led project that organised collaborations, exhibitions and retreats. 
Anika's ekphrastic story 'Interview with Alice Moore, Potion Maker' won Bath Flash Fiction Festival's Great Flash Off competition in October, 2022. You can read it by clicking here. 

As well as running The Flash Cabin, Anika is a rep for Writers' HQ where she runs online sessions and in-person retreats in Brighton.

Someone you know recently said with an Austrian accent that "You should always have a Plan" and we do agree when it comes to Drawing, Painting or any Creative activity. Here is one plan we created for you.

<li>You smile, get really excited and look for all Art materials that you thought had gone and set yourself up making sure the Floor is kept protected, preferably not too far from a TV screen that you could HDMI connect to your PC for the class so you may use an easel for example.</li>
<li>you book a class here on Cademy and write it down on your Diary after ordering bits you need online.</li>
<li>The days has come, you've installed zoom on your PC, connected the Tele to it, got your equipment ready, kettle nearby and cookies (OH no! sorry not those) and had a look at our latest drawings captured at classes at http://e.pc.cd/r7WotalK or on Google to feel inspired/create a plan. Then you'll connect at 6.25pm so we can let you in. Classes usually start at 6.32pm but you can drop in at anytime even 5 mins before the end.</li>
<li>The Teacher will tell you what he/she would do, look at, keep an eye on or the opposite the don'ts. Trying to get you to add tools to your Artist tool box that you will use more and more, quicklier and more automatically so you can develop other sides of your Art.</li>
<li>Maybe your Wifi goes bad, you received a job call or you just forgot, oh no! In this case you have nothing to worry about as you now know that you can draw at anytime from the recording.</li>
<li>You've drawn for 2 to 3 hours (as occasionally we get a new life model who want to audition at the end for an hour), you feel amazing, you forgot Everything so you'll then mingle with other similar minded participants showing your drawings and getting feedback and tips. Some days you may want to rush out or not show any drawings and all is fine.</li>
<li>You want more and discovered that what you've paid for one class could be the same for a all Month (15 to 18 classes) and so you email us to find out more at eukart at msn.com.</li>

Inspired by Pop Art and the graphic design of protest art, Neon Knitting uses Dayglo yarns to create bold designs using simple techniques:-
 
Knitting stripes with knit & purl patterns
Combining open and raised effects to create bold patterns
Adding fabric to knitting
 
The session includes a worksheet, knitting demonstrations, plus a PowerPoint presentation covering ways to create your fabrics, using simple mark making and basic silk screen printing. There will also be examples to inspire further exploration after the session.

Join us for a FREE Tea 'N Chat with Textile artist and teacher LINDA HARVEY who talks about her work.
We are excited to have the immensely talented mixed-media textile artist Linda Harvey join us for our April Tea 'N Chat event. With over 25 years of experience in both teaching and creating, Linda brings a deep well of knowledge and a true passion for her craft. As the Head of Textiles at Archbishop Holgate's School in York and a dedicated member of York Textile Artists and The Society for Embroidered Work, Linda's commitment to her art is truly inspiring.
On the night, during the event, we will be running a mini competition to win one of Linda's new Books ‘INSPIRED BY YOU’ 100 Days of Textiles Art



Linda’s artwork is a mesmerizing fusion of rustic textures and innovative techniques. Drawing inspiration from her travels, she transforms photographs into expressive, abstract textile creations. Her work beautifully reflects her love for color and texture, incorporating elements such as hand-felted backgrounds, free-motion embroidery, intricate layering, and rust dyeing.

LINDA HARVEY  Textile Artist and Head of Textiles at Archbishop Colgate School, York

Linda studied Textiles and Surface Design at University Centre Somerset, graduating in 1994. She is a textile artist and Head of Textiles at a York secondary school and a member of York Textile Artists and The Society for Embroidered Work, which promotes and supports the best in stitched art worldwide.
The inspiration for her work mainly comes from the places she visits, taking photographs of anything that catches her eye. These photographs give a starting point from which her work evolves, often working on several pieces at a time, as she enjoys an expressive and experimental way of working.
Linda is inspired by rustic textures and the ageing process, drawn to anything corroded and tarnished and immediately seeing how it can be turned into a textile art piece. Colour and texture are the key elements in her work.



The Textiles Skills Centre Associates are a team of volunteers that manage the social media platforms and website, and offer support, mentorship and advice to textile teachers and trainees. We organise free resource networking events each month (Tea 'N Chat) and are always on hand to help and encourage when needed.

LOOKING FOR: ADULT FICTION, NON-FICTION

Liza represents a range of fiction and non-fiction. On the fiction side, she is looking for historical fiction that is well researched, immerses readers in the era, and looks at overlooked characters from the past, or perhaps gives a new spin on someone we think we know. On the literary and upmarket side, she is looking for novels infused with emotions that capture the human experience and make readers think. If your literary novel is something that A24 productions might turn into a movie, this is Liza’s taste.

When it comes to fantasy, she loves urban and grounded fantasy (no sci-fi please!), and is always happy to look at anything with a vampire, werewolf, witches, warlocks, fairies, and perhaps a sinister selkie or two. She is also very much looking for romantasy and is the best person at the agency to submit that too. For thrillers, send her anything set in an exotic location, high-concept, or things with a speculative twist. She loves when characters are put in situations she would never want to be in, and then they have to get out of it. Her recent favourite fiction includes: Notes on an Execution, Lady Macbethad, Hamnet, A Discovery of Witches, House of Earth and Blood, The Starless Sea, Piranesi, Our Wives Under the Sea, The Pisces, Such A Fun Age.

When it comes to non fiction, she is looking for books that teach her something new or reframe a topic from an alternative point of view. This can include cookery, pop science, and social history. Rachel Neely began her publishing career in 2016 at HarperCollins, before moving to Hachette where she worked as an editor for the next six years, specialising in crime and thrillers along with book club novels and contemporary fiction, most recently as a Commissioning Editor at Orion. 

Rachel joined Mushens Entertainment at the start of 2022 as an Associate Agent, assisting Juliet Mushens with her client list, including multiple Sunday Times and New York Times bestselling authors. Simultaneously she began signing her own clients. In August 2023 she was promoted to Literary Agent and in 2024 achieved Bookseller Rising Star status.

In actively growing her list, Rachel is looking for book-club fiction, dark academia, rom-coms, tragic love stories, crime and thrillers. Please note she is not the right agent for sci-fi, espionage novels, YA or children’s books.

She would love to see a commercial locked-room thriller in the vein of The Midnight Feast, The White Lotus or with shades of Succession; novels about cults such as The Girls; a voice-led serial-killer thriller reminiscent of How to Kill Your Family; compelling dark academia to rival The Secret History; a high-concept but tragic love story that will make her ugly cry in the vein of The Time Traveller’s Wife or One Day; and anything that has an outsider trying to break into the world of the privileged and morally bankrupt.
Besides those above, her favourite novels include The List, The Talented Mr Ripley, The Lovely Bones, Other People’s Clothes, The It Girl, The Girl Before, Notes on an Execution, My Dark Vanessa and My Sister the Serial Killer.

Together we&rsquo;ll explore ways to &nbsp;create work that reflects your individual interests, passion, and point of view, no matter your experience level. The course content is delivered over seven live Zoom sessions, in a small, welcoming group with plenty of opportunities for interaction. Additionally, there will be optional (but highly recommended) assignments to complete in between the live sessions - assignments designed to get you stuck in to your creative practice in new and interesting ways.During each live session, there will be a demonstration focusing on a particular aspect of visual art - this will include various materials, subjects, and considerations such as composition, theme, mark-making, layering, and so on. We will also have a look at everyone&rsquo;s recent creations, with celebration of the triumphs and suggestions for moving forward with work-in-progress. Together we&rsquo;ll explore techniques including drawing, painting, mixed-media, paper craft, and collage, but you don&rsquo;t have to work exclusively in these media to take part - all creative disciplines are welcome.Each participant will be encouraged to deepen their explorations in whatever direction interests them most - be it a series of written reflections, sketches, collages, photographs, mixed-media pieces, or a unique, personal combination of all these.There will be an optional online discussion group for participants to stay connected and share their creations with each other between sessions.
