Our stoma care training course is intended to cover all aspects of safe principles of stoma care including practical application within a classroom environment.
The prevalence of stomas in the UK is significant, one in 335 people in the UK are currently living with a stoma (Colostomy UK, 2023). It is crucial to recognise that people of all age groups can have a stoma, emphasising the widespread impact and relevance of stoma care training.
While specialist stoma nurses typically provide specialised care for stoma patients, it is essential to acknowledge that these individuals may also receive care within clinical settings, where non-specialist healthcare professionals may be responsible for their well-being. Consequently, it becomes imperative for these healthcare professionals to possess a fundamental understanding of stoma management to effectively address the stoma-related health issues that patients may encounter.
In both routine stoma care and situations where complications arise, non-specialist healthcare professionals should be equipped with the necessary knowledge to recognise when it is appropriate to seek assistance from a stoma care nurse. By understanding the basics of stoma management, these professionals can ensure that patients receive the appropriate care and support, ultimately contributing to enhanced patient outcomes and quality of life.
