I was fortunate enough to play on the wing for Stoke way back in 1954, Wally Turner was the skipper then and I learned a lot from Father Daly, an Irish international, who was in the centre. On the other wing was Jimmy Bamford who, together with his brother Robin, was killed in a tragic plane crash in Austria. John Evans was the scrum half and Paul Tarpey, an under 19 international (as I was), was another centre. There was a great spirit in the club but I must admit that watching modern rugby...
