This course provides both underpinning knowledge of stoma care and practical techniques to deliver person centred support for someone who requires stoma care.

Course Aims:

Describe the human digestive system

Explain the terms ‘stoma’, ‘colostomy’, ‘ileostomy’ and ‘urostomy’.

List some of the conditions that may necessitate stoma surgery.

Compare and contrast colostomy, ileostomy, and urostomy.

Describe the different products available.

Know the procedure for fitting, emptying removing and re-applying stoma products.

Identify the issues involved in caring for a stoma and how you can support an individual who is living with one.
