Epilepsy is a common and serious neurological condition which affects the brain and nervous system. Seizures always start in the brain and are caused by many different underlying causes, including a person's genetics, a structural change in the brain or from other underlying conditions.
Some individuals are prescribed ‘Emergency Resue Medication’ to assist with managing their seizures and prevent life threatening complications.
By the end of this training, you will also have the skills and knowledge to understand and use this medication safely and comply with legal aspects of administering medication.
Describe what epilepsy is
Give examples of the possible causes of epilepsy
Have a basic understanding of how epilepsy is diagnosed
Outline the differences between some of the seizures experienced in epilepsy
List the treatments for epilepsy
Explain how to give First Aid to a person who is having a seizure caused by epilepsy
Understand the importance of effective risk assessment, care planning and documentation in the care and support of someone with epilepsy
Know where to get further information and support
Practical demonstration and training in the use of Emergency Rescue Medication (Midazolam)
Competencies can be signed-off for face-to-face delivery
Successful candidates will receive certification of achievement.
