Course Overview:
The "Emergency Treatment of Adrenal Crisis" course is designed to provide healthcare professionals with the essential knowledge and skills needed to recognise, manage, and provide prompt emergency treatment for individuals experiencing adrenal crisis, also known as an Addisonian crisis or adrenal insufficiency crisis. This course is particularly relevant for medical practitioners, nurses, paramedics, and others who may encounter individuals with adrenal insufficiency.

Course Content:
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
1. Explain Adrenal insufficiency and Adrenal crisis
2. Proactive prevention of Adrenal crisis including sick day rules
3. Recognising Adrenal Crisis (signs and symptoms)
4. List the steps for the emergency treatment of Adrenal crisis
5. Outline what should be contained in the Adrenal crisis emergency box
6. Practice in simulation the reconstitution of hydrocortisone powder for injection
7. Practice in simulation the emergency administration of intramuscular 100mg Hydrocortisone into the lateral thigh
8. Summarise the steps to take upon administration of the emergency hydrocortisone
9. Discuss if ever in doubt or unsure that it could be Adrenal crisis then ALWAYS administer the emergency hydrocortisone injection without delay and call 999
10. Explain the importance of record keeping, documentation and following the relevant emergency protocol
Course Objectives:
1. Recognise the signs and symptoms of adrenal crisis: Understand the clinical manifestations and early warning signs of adrenal crisis, including hypotension, dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and altered mental status.
2. Learn about the underlying causes: Familiarize yourself with the conditions that can lead to adrenal crisis, including adrenal gland disorders and stressors that trigger acute adrenal insufficiency.
3. Acquire skills in rapid assessment: Develop hands-on skills in quickly assessing the severity of an adrenal crisis, including measuring vital signs, fluid status, electrolyte levels, and mental status.
4. Understand glucocorticoid replacement therapy: Learn about the administration of emergency glucocorticoid medications such as hydrocortisone and dexamethasone, including dosing, routes of administration, and monitoring.
5. Address fluid and electrolyte management: Gain knowledge about fluid resuscitation and electrolyte replacement strategies to correct imbalances and stabilize the patient's condition.
6. Recognise the importance of collaboration: Understand the significance of interdisciplinary collaboration in managing adrenal crisis, including communication with endocrinologists and other healthcare specialists.
7. Develop communication skills: Learn effective communication techniques to educate patients, caregivers, and family members about adrenal crisis, preventive measures, and the importance of seeking medical attention.
8. Ethical considerations and patient-centered care: Explore ethical issues related to patient autonomy, informed consent, and providing emergency care with empathy, respect, and dignity.
Assessment:
Participants' understanding of adrenal crisis management and their ability to respond effectively in simulated scenarios will be assessed through case study analysis, practical demonstrations, and discussions.
