Course Overview:
The "Intravenous Administration of Fluid and Medication" course is designed to provide healthcare professionals with the knowledge and practical skills necessary for safe and effective intravenous (IV) therapy. This course is intended for nurses, medical students, paramedics, and other healthcare practitioners involved in administering fluids and medications via the intravenous route.

Course Content:
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
1. Explain the normal physiology of fluid and electrolyte balance
2. Explain how abnormal fluid distribution can occur
3. Explain the differences between Crystalloids and Colloids *
4. Review electrolytes and Acid-base balance
5. Outline how to assess fluid status and care for a patient receiving IV fluid including maintenance and resuscitative fluid therapy
6. Demonstrate accurate documentation in the recording of a fluid balance chart
7. List the indications for administering drugs via the intravenous (IV) route
8. Discuss the professional issues for registered nurses delivering IV therapy.
Course Objectives:
1. Recognise the importance of IV therapy: Understand the significance of proper IV fluid and medication administration for patient care, hydration, and medication delivery.
2. Learn about IV fluid types and indications: Familiarise yourself with different types of IV fluids, including crystalloids and colloids, and their appropriate indications based on patient needs.
3. Acquire skills in medication administration: Develop hands-on skills in accurately preparing and administering medications through IV routes, considering compatibility, dosage, and infusion rates.
4. Understand infection prevention and aseptic technique: Learn best practices for maintaining infection control during IV therapy, including proper hand hygiene and sterile procedures.
5. Address potential complications and adverse reactions: Gain knowledge about possible complications, such as infiltration, phlebitis, and allergic reactions, and strategies for early detection and management.
6. Master IV fluid calculation and infusion rate: Learn to calculate and adjust IV fluid infusion rates based on patient characteristics, condition, and prescribed therapy.
7. Develop IV site assessment skills: Understand how to assess IV sites for signs of complications, infection, and patient comfort during fluid and medication administration.
8. Ethical considerations and patient-centered care: Explore ethical issues related to patient autonomy, informed consent, and delivering care with empathy, respect, and dignity.
Assessment and Certification:
Participants will undergo practical skills assessments, written assessments, and potentially scenario-based evaluations to evaluate their understanding and competence in intravenous administration of fluids and medications. Successful completion will lead to a certification of achievement in "Intravenous Administration of Fluid and Medication."
