Course Overview:
The "Clinical Safe Holding Techniques" course is designed to provide healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills required for safe and effective patient "restrictive" holding during various clinical procedures. Holding patients securely and comfortably is crucial for ensuring procedural success, minimising patient discomfort, and preventing injuries to both patients and healthcare providers. This course offers comprehensive training in techniques for holding patients safely during medical examinations, procedures, and interventions.

Course Content:
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Importance of communication, de-escalation and positive behavioural support
2. Risk assessment and least restrictive options
3. Teamwork including having a “communicator” and a “monitor”
4. Preventing risk of injury and harm including positional asphyxia
5. Low level restrictive holds including double wrist hold, straight arm immobilisation, seating to rest position, managing kicking and the safe use of equipment including wedge, pod, beanbags all for use during clinical interventions
6. Debrief and record keeping
Course Objectives:
1. Understand Safe Holding Fundamentals: Comprehend the importance of safe holding techniques in managing challenging behaviours and ensuring the safety of all parties involved.
2. Master Safe Holding Techniques: Develop proficiency in performing safe holding techniques that prioritise the physical and emotional well-being of the individual and the healthcare team.
3. Prioritise Communication and De-Escalation: Learn effective communication skills and de-escalation strategies to prevent challenging situations from escalating further.
4. Implement Ethical and Legal Considerations: Understand the ethical and legal aspects of safe holding, including informed consent, documentation, and reporting.
5. Promote a Therapeutic Environment: Develop techniques to maintain a therapeutic and supportive environment while addressing aggressive or challenging behaviours.
Assessment and Certification:
Participants will undergo practical skills assessments to evaluate their ability to safely and effectively hold patients during various clinical procedures. Successful completion will lead to a certification of achievement in "Clinical Safe Holding Techniques."
