By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
1. List the indications and contraindications for venepuncture
2. Outline the relevant anatomy and physiology
3. Explain the criteria for selecting an appropriate site and vein
4. Discuss how to minimise the risk of infection to the individual and staff member
5. Summarise the professional, legal, policy and ethical issues relevant to venepuncture
6. Describe the specifics of practice including tourniquet use, order of draw, inversions etc.
7. Outline the venepuncture procedure
8. Explain post venepuncture care and troubleshooting
9. Outline labelling and recording requirements
10. Practice venepuncture in simulation
Course Objectives:
1. Comprehend Venepuncture Fundamentals: Understand the importance of venepuncture, the anatomy of veins, and the role of venepuncture in healthcare.
2. Perform Venepuncture Techniques: Develop proficiency in selecting appropriate venepuncture sites, using aseptic techniques, and effectively inserting and withdrawing needles.
3. Implement Infection Control Measures: Learn proper infection control practices to minimize the risk of complications during venepuncture procedures.
4. Prioritise Patient Comfort: Understand strategies for reducing patient anxiety, minimizing pain, and ensuring patient comfort during the procedure.
