Course Overview:
The "An Understanding of Seizure First Aid and the Administration of Rectal Paraldehyde" course is designed to provide participants with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills related to assisting individuals during seizures and administering rectal paraldehyde as a rescue medication in the event of prolonged or severe seizures. This course is suitable for caregivers, healthcare professionals, educators, and individuals who may need to respond effectively to seizures and administer rectal paraldehyde.

Course Content:
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
1. Explain the features of an Emergency Seizure Management Plan
2. List the steps to take when supporting someone who is having a seizure
3. Demonstrate in simulation how to administer Rectal Paraldehyde
The learner should have previously completed Epilepsy Awareness training.
Course Objectives:
1. Recognise different types of seizures: Understand the classification of seizures, including focal, generalised, and status epilepticus, to tailor interventions accordingly.
2. Learn about seizure first aid: Familiarise yourself with appropriate seizure first aid measures, including ensuring patient safety, positioning, and protecting the airway.
3. Acquire skills in rectal paraldehyde administration: Develop hands-on skills in safely and accurately administering rectal paraldehyde, including proper dosing, preparation, and technique.
4. Understand indications and contraindications: Learn about situations where rectal paraldehyde is indicated, such as prolonged seizures, and cases where it might be contraindicated.
5. Address potential complications and side effects: Gain knowledge about possible complications and adverse effects associated with rectal paraldehyde administration and strategies for managing them.
6. Recognise the importance of monitoring: Understand the significance of monitoring patients after rectal paraldehyde administration, including assessing response, vital signs, and potential adverse events.
7. Develop communication skills: Learn effective communication techniques to educate patients, caregivers, and family members about seizure management, rectal paraldehyde administration, and emergency responses.
