By the end of this course, participants should be able to:
1. Explain how the respiratory system works
2. List relevant upper airway and respiratory anatomy and physiology
3. Outline health problems that impair function - referring to individual’s health care plans
4. Explain the indications and contraindications of tracheostomies, oxygen, nebulisers, cough assist, suction and non-invasive ventilation
5. Explain the risks and benefits of tracheostomies, oxygen, nebulisers, cough assist, suction and non-invasive ventilation
6. Describe the checks, safeguards and precautions required for the procedure and equipment
7. Outline the importance of following the individual prescription / health care plan
8. List the monitoring and observation steps required
9. Explain the importance of "hand-over", communication and record keeping
10. Outline emergencies and circumstances that would require urgent medical care and treatment from the emergency services
11. Practice tracheostomy care, oxygen administration, nebuliser administration, cough assist, suction and non-invasive ventilation utilising a range of delivery methods in simulation
Course Objectives:
1. Comprehend Respiratory Physiology: Understand the structure and function of the respiratory system, including gas exchange, lung mechanics, and respiratory control.
2. Perform Respiratory Assessment: Develop skills to assess respiratory function, including auscultation, measuring respiratory rate, and interpreting oxygen saturation levels.
3. Recognise Common Respiratory Conditions: Identify and differentiate between common respiratory disorders such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and pneumonia.
4. Provide Respiratory Therapies: Learn about various respiratory therapies, including oxygen therapy, nebulisation, incentive spirometry, and chest physiotherapy.
5. Administer Medications: Gain proficiency in administering respiratory medications, including bronchodilators, corticosteroids, and mucolytics.
6. Promote Patient Education: Understand the importance of educating patients about respiratory conditions, medication usage, lifestyle modifications, and self-management.
