Peat Oberon is an artist blacksmith based at a forge in the grounds of Preston Hall Museum near Stockton-on-Tees in the North-East of England. He originally trained as a craft teacher and taught various subjects including crafts and technical drawing in schools and sixth form college for 15 years before becoming a full-time blacksmith in 1980. Since then he has earned his living and an esteemed world reputation producing a wealth of architectural, sculptural and decorative ironwork. Peat began teaching the craft of blacksmithing in 1990, combining his skills as an artist, craftsman and teacher with his life-long passion for working with metal. At his School of Blacksmithing he delivers quality courses where his students enjoy the expert tuition of a master blacksmith.

Artist Blacksmith : Julian Wadsworth "The expression of our time now, through a medium of ancient significance." Welcome to the timeless world of metalwork and forgework. What is Blacksmithing? Blacksmithing is the craft where, by working the iron in its hot, plastic state it is possible to shape and transform what is normally considered a hard-edged material into an altogether softer, more fluid expression. From small fittings to larger architectural applications, ironwork may be designed and used to enrich both the visual and physical aspects of our environment. Commissions Whether public or private commissions, from design concept to full realisation, open communication and two way dialogue is welcome, as finer tuning of the design at early stages can often result in greater and more unusual detailing. It is here that iron working gives the chance for personal expression and thereby uniqueness in the detailing to the specific commission. It is the ART, or unison, that drives the CRAFT, and good craft enables full and lasting realisation. I use a wide variety of blacksmith and metal working techniques including hot forging processes, plate and sheet forming, repousse, rivetting, welding, pattern making for cast iron work and etching. Their appropriate application is determined by the type of work itself.

The Malham Smithy is the workshop of female blacksmith Annabelle Bradley, where she runs blacksmith experience days and designs and hand forges sculptural and functional wrought ironwork. Annabelle uses traditional blacksmithing techniques combined with contemporary design in producing decorative items for the home and garden. The Malham Smithy is situated in the heart of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales village of Malham and has a gallery area displaying wrought ironwork as well as a viewing area to be able to watch Annabelle at work on the traditional coke forge, if you are looking for things to do in Malham or the Yorkshire Dales, come and visit the historic Malham Smithy, suitable leisure entertainment for families, old and young. A small selection of hand forged items such as candle sconces, companion sets and hooks etc. are available to purchase from the gallery, you can also take the opportunity to discuss commissions for bespoke designs, or book a session to forge your own piece of hand crafted art. The Malham Smithy was bequeathed to the Parish Church by Artist Blacksmith Bill Wild in the early 1980's, and has ever since been leased out by the Church as a traditional blacksmiths workshop. In February 2007, Annabelle Bradley was given the opportunity to work from the Malham Smithy and continues to this day keeping this beautiful Yorkshire Dales village heritage alive. All pieces are intended to outlive their maker and those for whom they are made. I have no fixed product list but specialise in designing and making individual works.

Hi, I'm David Southgate, a Sheffield Blacksmith My Blacksmithing journey began in early 2014, with a 3 day course in rural Lincolnshire. I was able to take on a forge at Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet, a museum in Sheffield. In late 2015 I embarked on the well respected "Design and Forgework Skills" course at the National School of Blacksmithing in Hereford. I passed with distinction in July 2017.

I have been working as a blacksmith for over 30 years and have lots of experience and anecdotes to share with participants over the course! I enjoy my career in metalworking, and making and creating products is a totally satisfying way to earn a living. I want to re-create this experience for everyone attending my courses – a real taste of a day in the life of a blacksmith! I was always driven by the desire to ‘make things’ – and on leaving school I started working at a local forge and learning the trade. I choose metal as a medium originally purely as it was more forgiving than wood, although I do enjoy working with wood too nowadays and have started a bit of side-line in sheds and summerhouses.
