I first explored yoga in a workplace Iyengar class nearly 30 years ago. I was not remotely flexible and remember having to use a virtual scaffold of blocks and blankets to get into alignment for some postures. A recurring back injury (I have multiple bulging disks in my thoracic and cervical spine as well as significant degeneration – see the photo!) began troubling me several years ago and forced me to give up the high impact sports that I had previously enjoyed. An MRI scan showed my spine to look like that of a 70 year old and each day began in pain and extreme stiffness. yoga-help-back-pain-problems I rediscovered yoga after a brief foray into Pilates and gradually found that my pain eased as my flexibility and core strength increased. Since I’ve been more in control of the yoga I do (as a teacher I’m obviously writing my own lesson plans), I’ve found my back has become incrementally better. All my classes are taught with an awareness of back issues. They all incorporate plenty of stretches designed to reduce back pain, and work to improve core strength. I will often plan a series of classes specifically for lower, middle or upper back pain. If you’d like to attend one just let me know! Always Teaching My obsession with yoga grew and I began attending multiple classes each week and travelling to workshops and retreats all over the world occasionally dragging my family with me (the photo here that you will see if you are viewing the website on a computer rather than a phone is of me and my son Alfie who is something of a calisthenics specialist). I’ve taught in virtually every other aspect of my life. I have a PGCE in adult education, have taught on University Masters courses (I’m a digital marketing specialist in my non yoga life) and have delivered business training in the UK and North America. Training to be a yoga teacher was therefore a natural progression albeit somewhat unusual to take such a dramatic career change in my 50s. Accreditation I have a 250 hour yoga teacher training qualification with Yoga Alliance and am also a member of the British Wheel of Yoga. I continue to hoover up whatever other yoga-related knowledge I can with specialist workshops covering a range of aspects from accessible yoga teaching to Ashtanga, Iyengar, Scaravelli-influenced approaches, somatic yoga, transformational breath work and deep dive retreats where just occasionally I attempt to simply “be” rather than striving always to learn. My teaching reflects the main styles of yoga that have influenced me and most weeks I incorporate some new posture or approach that I’ve discovered in a recent workshop. I hold insurance with Covea – policy reference COBI3200184XB. My classes are held in Henfield where I now live. My previous Rickmansworth classes are now taught by Annette Henn.

After traveling seven seas, both geographically and professionally, Mairi started running Yoga with Mairi classes in central Scotland, in 2018, gradually growing a small but inclusive community of dedicated Hatha Yoga practitioners. Now getting close to 1000 of teaching hours delivered. Mairi started practicing Hatha Yoga 20 years ago, and had an honour to learn from many amazing teachers across the world. Her practice was, however, particularly influenced by the Bihar and Hridaya schools of Yoga, and this orientation led her to discover the Akasha Yoga Academy (Bali/Thailand), where she completed her 200hrs Hatha Yoga Teacher Training in 2017. Mairi also holds a First Class Certificate in Philosophy of Yoga, from Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies affiliated to the University of Oxford (2016). Besides that, and somewhat relevant to her teaching, Mairi holds a continental MD qualification from her first degree, and she is a Master of Science in social medicine from her second degree. She also holds a postgraduate qualification in Cultural and Gender Studies. Since her first qualification from the School of Medicine at the University of Belgrade (Serbia), and until recently, Mairi was an academic researcher in social medicine and medical sociology, and for some time, also a lecturer. She was specialising in qualitative research and understanding health and access to healthcare, with a particular interest in complexity theory, holistic health & integrative healthcare. FOUNDER & MANAGING DIRECTOR HANNAH TITLEY Hannah founded The Golden Circle in 2017 after qualifying as a teacher through the Teach First programme. Teaching in the classroom showed that school doesn’t work for everyone. For children who are talented in sports, art, or music, or who require extra academic support or challenge, school doesn’t bring out their best. Born in Manchester, Hannah was educated at Altrincham Grammar School for Girls before reading Biological Sciences at New College, Oxford University. She holds a first class Master’s degree from King’s College London and PGCE teaching qualification which is rated ‘Outstanding’. In addition to teaching, Hannah has worked as a Researcher for Oxford University and Reform think tank. She is Director of the Home Schooling Association and continues to teach Science at Key Stage 4 and 5. She speaks regularly at education events and provides written commentary for national media including the BBC, The Times, Telegraph and The Guardian. HEAD OF OPERATIONS LYDIA TITLEY Lydia is originally from Manchester and completed her secondary education at Altrincham Grammar School for Girls. Following this, her interest in French language and culture led her to the University of Bath, where she completed a BSc in International Business Management and French. Lydia took the opportunity to spend a year in Paris where she attended the prestigious business school of ESCP Paris, studying a bilingual Master’s in Management, and worked as a European Account Manager at an international Marketing and Publishing firm. Lydia joined The Golden Circle team in 2018, where she holds the role of Head of Operations. In her spare time, Lydia enjoys yoga and is currently completing a Mindfulness Teacher Training course. She has a keen interest in the arts, theatre and travel.
