Really popular during the American Civil War the quilt is made up of strips of material, one half light, the other half dark focused around a central square (representing the heart of the home). Have a go at this beautiful and rewarding hand embroidery technique, which is all done with the simplest of stitches – running stitch. In this class Peter will teach you how to make a catch with a hinged locking mechanism.This project is easier than it first looks, but you do need to have experience piercing out shapes and drilling. During the one-day workshop Peter will show you some other options and explain how they work. You will also be provided with information handouts and materials. These specialist skills can be applied across other aspects of jewellery making. You NEVER stop learning as far as the jewellery industry is concerned and it is Peter’s passion to maintain traditional skill. EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Students should have some workshop experience and be confident using normal jewellery tools and equipment. A relaxed and informal Blackwork Embroidery course in the lovely setting of a converted 18th Century cotton mill in Warwick Bridge, Carlisle. This course has been designed to guide the complete beginner or act as a refresher for those who may have dabbled in Blackwork embroidery in the past. We will cover the history, styles of Blackwork embroidery, threads and techniques.
Ideal as an introduction to working with clay using a selection of approaches. About this Event Cyan Clayworks is an artist-run, non profit studio and teaching space. This three hour introductory class is suitable for adult beginners, and will focus on tile making, press moulded dishes and wheel throwing. Each student will be introduced to the basics of throwing; centering the clay, and forming a small vessel each. You will be able to create a small group of unique textured and coloured slip decorated tiles and a pressmoulded dish using one of our moulds. Limited class sizes with both Fiona and Chris teaching so lots of hands on support! You will be given one to one support while on the wheel. Your work will be trimmed (wheelthrown pots), fired and glazed ready to collect a few weeks later. You'll be notified by email and will then have a month to collect your pieces. £60 per person, inclusive of booking fee, materials, preparation, glazing and firings.
