Gina-B Silkworks designs and produces a variety of craft kits, books, DVDs and other items with an emphasis on handwork & passementerie - decorative textile crafts. We also stock a range of tools & materials for these crafts. Gina also makes bespoke items to commission. "Traditional Crafts for the modern maker" About Gina - Gina Barrett has been making reconstructions of buttons, dress trimmings and other passementerie for museums and costumiers since 1999. Her work can be seen in a variety of museums, heritage sites & stately homes including the Royal Mews, the Royal Armouries, Historic Royal Palaces, The Victoria & Albert Museum, English Heritage, Chicago Museum of Art and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.  She provided buttons, ribbons and braid for an award-winning project at Perth Museum, and hundreds of buttons for the film “Sweeney Todd”. Her latest film work includes buttons for "Napoleon" and "Lee". She has created buttons & trimmings for various series including “The Crown”, “Becoming Elizabeth” , “A Stitch in Time”. She is the author of a number of books including Buttons, A Passementerie Workshop Manual, Dorset Ring Buttons, Thread Wrapped Buttons, Zwirnknopf Buttons and the Making Passementerie range of instructional DVDs. She appears on the Create & Craft channel with demonstrations of passementerie techniques, representing her company Gina-B Silkworks. Gina is the contributor for the Passementerie entry in the Encyclopaedia of Medieval Dress and Textiles of the British Isles c. 450-1450 (Brill). She has also co-authored Tak V Bowes Departed: A 15th Century Braiding Manual Examined and 6 booklets on medieval narrow wares, and regularly produces how-to articles for magazines, as well as papers and essays on other forms of passementerie. Gina has been involved in textile research projects with groups around the world, and is a founder member of Soper Lane, a group begun in 1999 to research the lives and work of the medieval London silkwomen.  Gina is a trained illustrator, with a background in historical and diagram illustration and graphic design. Her passion for textiles grew from studying historical costume for her illustrative work.

My work is driven by the urge to experiment and sample yarns. I respond to the environments I find myself in, urban or rural. Trees are a constant inspiration, as are buildings. I have recently been making work concerned with vision and the loss of sight. I favour plant fibres: cotton, hemp, linen, jute and bamboo but also include wool and silk. I have been weaving on small frames since I was a child. Following an art and design Foundation Course, I gained a BA (Hons) in African and Asian Art and Archaeology at SOAS, London University. I have worked as an arts administrator and assistant for artists and arts organisations, gaining a certificate in Arts Management and Levels 1 & 2 OCA Textiles. Having specialised in Tapestry Weaving, I completed the post-graduate diploma at West Dean College in 1997. I exhibit in the UK and internationally. Conversely, I am also working on and researching a medieval-inspired community embroidered tapestry to commemorate the Battle of Lewes (1264). I teach tapestry weaving and crewel embroidery techniques.

Working from a dedicated studio in East London the aim of the studio is support designers and emerging dye technicians to use sustainable dye practices. We are also the UK’s first for hire Natural Dye Studio offering 3 individual spaces to hire for sampling and smaller scale dyeing projects. As a social enterprise 10% of our profits are given to Cordwainers Grow who run food and growing classes in the communtiy with a focus on working with homeless families, migrants and refugees as well as local residents keen to learn more about sustainable living.

The Exhibition Gallery, The Country Wife, Tearoom, Office, Shop etc. are open to the public on: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays (10am to 4pm) and the First Saturday of each month (10am to 4pm) (7th May, 4th June, 2nd July, 6th August, 3rd September, 1st October, 5th November, 3rd December) The Green Sewing pop-up shop at 21 Northbrook Street , Newbury, is open 10am to 4pm Tues to Sats but ceases after the 21st May 2022. After that date our online Green Sewing shop will operate, or visit our actual shop at The Old Chapel.

Burnt Fen Alpacas is a family run farm, tourist attraction and teaching centre in North Norfolk. We have a beautiful friendly herd of around 40 alpacas who have been part of our family for over 20 years. We offer a variety of alpaca experiences and learning opportunities in a friendly peaceful space. Join us for our very popular alpaca trekking activity - Walking with Alpacas. Alpaca Yoga and Alpaca Cream Teas. As a textile artist I run regular textile courses working with alpaca fibre. I teach hand spinning, weaving and natural dyeing in my studio next to our alpacas. Driven by a desire to create texture and engage the senses, my work reflects my interest in haptic perception: - our instinct to touch and the importance of touch to the human experience. Taking an experimental approach to the ancient craft of felt making, I explore material combinations and processes, to celebrate tactility. Investigating the relationship between actual and perceived textures, translucency and opacity, I create functional objects with surfaces that invite physical interaction with the materials and challenge the perception of felt.

I set up my workshop in 1983 after leaving the Royal College of Art. In 1990 I established my studio in Model House Craft and Design Centre in Llantrisant. I work primarily in anodised aluminium producing one off and batch production jewellery. As the material is light and not too expensive I can make large, bold pieces which are both wearable and affordable. Most importantly, by anodising it, I can achieve bright and brilliant colour effects. My passions My three passions are colour, pattern and technique. I love making things and exploring the possibilities of different materials. Although I trained as a jeweller, my work has been heavily influenced by both traditional and contemporary textiles. Over the last twenty years I have also been developing work in felt. I combine this with my jewellery practice to create both functional pieces and work that is purely decorative. My creative ancestry inspires me Much of my recent work has evolved from looking back at my creative ancestry. It was my grandmothers who initiated my fascination with making objects. They passed on their traditional textile skills and started my passion for creating anything from colourful materials. In 2010, I received an Arts Council of Wales grant to help me purchase a laser cutter which enabled me to develop new work. I have used this to explore different materials such as taffeta, acrylic, cardboard and wood. This has opened up many exciting possibilities and I feel I have only just started this journey. I am involved in many craft groups and associations. I am regional co-ordinator and Chair of the International Feltmakers Association. I am a member of the Makers Guild in Wales, of the Association of Contemporary Jewellery and of MaP, a textile group. I have exhibited widely in the UK, Europe, Japan, USA and Canada.
