Mind in West Essex supports people affected by mental ill health, predominantly across West Essex to make positive changes in their lives and to improve their emotional resilience. We also aim to normalise the conversation around mental health and in doing so reduce the stigma that can be a barrier to people accessing the support that could help them to improve their quality of life. We provide a range of services in order to help us deliver on these aims, these include: counselling as part of the NHS psychological therapies service; a private counselling service; Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training; emotional resilience training; peer support; befriending to reduce isolation; bereavement work and community support. In addition to the above client facing services we also run a Mental Health Referral Triage service on behalf of West Essex CCG. This service processes all GP mental health referrals across West Essex and passes them on to the relevant provider. We have an active presence on social media platforms as part of our efforts to normalise mental health and engage with the public in a way that is accessible to a wide range of people. We are an independent, local, registered charity (Charity number 1091154) with a board of trustees drawn from the communities that we serve. We also affiliate to the national charity Mind; this means that we are part of a network of 140 other local Mind charities. The services we provide are delivered by a team of 34 staff and 60 volunteers. We’re Mind in West Essex, your expert mental health partner. Our network across England and Wales provide services that are practical and rooted in the reality of people’s lives.

Our hands-on experiences mean we have seen and all too often, had to deal with too many friends, colleagues and other veterans finding themselves in situations which could have been avoided had the right training and knowledge in relation to mental health been readily available. We aim to deliver regulated First Aid for Mental Health Training far and wide whilst making this invaluable resource affordable and accessible for individuals and corporate clients regardless of organisational size. We believe more people need to know more, talk more and most importantly listen more when it comes to mental health. Our mental health training aims to tackle stigma head on as well as empowering as many people as possible to start that all important conversation.

I’m Simon Michaels. I combine 30 years experience of meditation and mindfulness practice, with being a social entrepreneur and business advisor. Whilst my training and coaching is entirely secular, my experience of meditation comes from a deep and on-going practice in the Buddhist contemplative tradition. I have lay ordination as Upasaka Tsultrim Wangpo in the Namgyal lineage. This ancient wisdom is the foundation for effective mindfulness practice, where sound ethical values underpin the techniques and tools. My long experience in meditation, and on-going practice and retreat attendance, ensures that I stay in tune with 2500 years of teaching, that I channel when working with you. In parallel, I have been a very successful social entrepreneur for the last 20 years, applying the boundless energy that comes from being in touch with one's true self. This has included setting up seven profitable enterprises with multiple six-figure turnovers. I have formal qualifications in business support, coaching, and mindfulness teaching. I’m a member of the International Stress Management Association and have a Mental Health First Aid certificate, and adhere to the code of practice for mindfulness-based trainers. I’m an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a director of several successful ethical companies, and have advised businesses, government agencies, third sector organisations and local authorities, as well as training and coaching hundreds of individuals.

Lawyers are strong, intelligent professionals. Very often we’ve got the career, family, nice house, decent income, but experience failing mental health and a poor sense of well-being. Have you spent years climbing the ladder, striving to be the “go to” person for your clients and the person your team looks to for answers? But in clocking up all that chargeable time maybe you’ve missed school plays, dinner dates and family gatherings. Do you manage to have conversations with your spouses that doesn’t involve negotiating who’s paying the cleaner or picking up the kids from school? Lawyers have a larger dose of the “perfectionist” gene than you’ll see in many other professions. A large family therapy centre discovered from carefully studying thousands of hours of talking therapy that there were reliable patterns of therapeutic conversation that allowed clients to actually move forward with therapy, improve their lives and not need to see a therapist anymore.
