Medway NHS Foundation Trust operates a single-site hospital based in Gillingham, Medway Maritime Hospital, which serves a population of more than 424,000 across Medway and Swale. We provide clinical services to almost half a million patients a year, including more than 125,000 Emergency Department attendances, more than 88,000 admissions, more than 278,000 outpatients appointments and more than 5,000 babies born last year. As an NHS Foundation Trust, we have a 26-strong Council of Governors and more than 10,000 public members. We employ around 4,400 staff, making us one of Medway’s largest employers. We currently have many apprenticeships in the organisation, ranging from level 2 to level 7, and close to 400 volunteers provide invaluable support across the League of Friends, Hospital Radio and the Voluntary Services Department. The hospital is made up of two clinical divisions – Unplanned and Integrated Care and Planned Care – supported by corporate functions. Each clinical directorate has a dedicated leadership team comprising Divisional Director of Operations, Divisional Medical Director and Divisional Director of Nursing. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive method of stimulation that uses electrodes placed on the scalp to deliver a constant, low current. This study is being done to examine how tDCS affects the brain, and if brain changes are related to changes in mood. To see how tDCS affects brain signals, this study will use MRI scans. To make sure that changes are because of tDCS and not for other reasons, people will be randomized (assigned by chance) to receive either active or non-active (sham) tDCS using standard or small (high definition, HD) electrodes. This means if you agree to participate, you might not receive active experimental tDCS. You will be told at the end of the study if this is the case. If you did not receive active tDCS during the research, you will be invited to receive the same number of active tDCS sessions after the study. You may decide or not decide to receive these additional active tDCS sessions after your research participation is complete. We aim to enroll 100 patients who have depression and who have not made any changes to current medication(s) for the past six weeks.

The 2007 House of Lord’s Science and Technology committee report on the provision of allergy services identified a significant lack of educational opportunities. There was little available to the many groups of healthcare professionals who were on the front line of delivering care to increasing numbers of patients with allergic disease. The Asthma, Allergy & Lung Biology Division of the KCL School of Medicine, under the leadership of Prof Tak Lee, had a long history of commitment to Allergy education and in May 2008 founded the Allergy Academy. Partnerships were made with industry to allow the development of a comprehensive range of courses – from large group lecture programmes to small hands-on workshops. A deliberate move was made away from generic courses aimed at increasingly diverse groups of health professionals but instead towards programmes specific to the needs of different groups, who would be involved in every aspect of course development, faculty and evaluation. Our courses were developed with the practising clinician in mind and our corporate partners have provided us with the support to ensure that cost would not be a barrier to education amongst those who wanted it.

Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is the UK’s leading heart and lung hospital, treating around 50,000 patients each year. In addition to transplantation, Royal Papworth Hospital has the UK’s largest Respiratory Support and Sleep Centre (RSSC) and is one of five UK centres providing Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) to patients experiencing severe respiratory failure. It is also the only centre in the UK for a number of specialist services including Pulmonary Endarterectomy and Balloon Pulmonary Angioplasty (BPA). Royal Papworth Hospital is a member of Cambridge University Health Partners (CUHP), a partnership between one of the world's leading universities and three NHS Foundation Trusts. CUHP delivers world-class excellence in healthcare, research, clinical education and improves the health of people across Cambridgeshire, the East of England and nationally.
