What you'll do Have you ever wanted to create your own unique furniture? During this one day experience you’ll transform a pallet into a one-off piece of furniture for your home. First you'll find out how to source materials and discover the tools and techniques you’ll need to prepare your pallets for upcycling. Once Scott has introduced you to the workshop space, you’ll use a mix of hand and power tools to create your own piece, from a shoe or wine rack to a bird feeder, storage box or even a small bookcase. With your experience host's guidance, you'll leave with your own finished upcycled item. All materials, tools and safety equipment will be provided for you on the day. Everyone will have their temperature taken at the beginning of each day. Hand washing will be compulsory at set times during the courses. Face masks will be compulsory during the specific parts of the course where you will be breathing heavily due to exertion. The remainder of the course we will have face shields available as an option to facemasks. Face shields will be provided. But please bring your own face mask. On the day You don't need any previous woodwork experience, just some enthusiasm! Please wear old clothes (or something that you don’t mind getting damaged or torn) and sensible, closed toe footwear. Work boots are recommended. Tea and coffee will be available throughout the day, but please bring along your own packed lunch. Students who complete the PV201L workshop will be able to: Perform power and energy calculations Obtain and apply specifications for PV modules and determine their performance given various environmental and operating conditions Safely operate various types of digital multimeters Diagram and determine the power, current, and voltage characteristics of PV modules in different series and parallel configurations Install various mounting systems (ground, pole, roof, and trackers). Decipher balance-of-system equipment specification sheets to determine the critical information needed for system design Install a residential grid-direct system including the array, inverter, circuit conductors, and overcurrent protection Safely operate equipment grounding, system grounding, and components and conductors used for grounding Work with wires and components on schematics of residential grid-direct systems: disconnects, inverter, equipment grounding conductors, ungrounded conductors, grounded conductors, the grounding electrode(s), and the AC and DC system grounds Identify potential safety hazards and demonstrate the proper use of personal protective equipment for working on grid-direct PV systems List the order of installation, commissioning, and decommissioning of a grid-direct PV system Note: This class is a great complement to PV301L, the Solar Electric Lab Week (Battery-Based). This one day course is your chance to make the classic Adirondack chair, the chair is made in spruce softwood, which will be supplied.  The course will introduce some basic woodworking skills on mainly power tools, saws, routers etc. At the end of the day you will have a sanded chair, which you will not finish at the workshop, we will advise on finishes you can apply, due to the varying types and colours available. The chair can be transported in two pieces, and will take 5 minutes to set up at home. This is a chance to have a great day out making your own chair and learning some skills along the way!!!
