Expectations and aspirations are high here and we are committed to developing the young people in our care, whatever their talents. When Ofsted last visited, it commented: “The all-pervading caring ethos ensures that pupils are happy and able to thrive from the moment they arrive at school. Pupils are very keen to share their pleasure of being at school and went out of their way to let inspectors know.” That is every bit as true today as it was then. Examination performance is very strong. At A level, students reach exceptional levels in a thriving Sixth Form of 350 students. Students routinely progress to Russell Group universities, including year-on-year to Oxford and Cambridge. In 2022, two students progressed to Oxford and Cambridge to read medicine, with a further moving to Oxford to study mathematics; in addition, one student is embarking on a degree in veterinary science. We are proud of the numbers of students who move on to university education, typically around 75% each year, and even more delighted in the variety of subjects that are chosen, following a rich A level experience here. Increasing numbers are also progressing to some prestigious higher-level apprenticeships, including one this year in software engineering with Lockheed Martin. At GCSE, students also perform well, both in value-added terms and in raw attainment. As a consequence, we have large numbers moving in to our Sixth Form, complemented every year with a number of students from other schools who choose to join us for their A level programme. Ofsted confirmed the strength in pastoral care alongside provision for purposeful learning by adding that we “have established a school that holds the academic success and emotional well-being of each pupil at its heart.” As a parent of four children myself, I am acutely aware of the increasing importance of education in today’s world and the role that we, as teachers, have to play in developing our children so that they are fully equipped to make positive contributions to society. The staff at Sheldon School are extremely committed and dedicated to ensure that this is the case and I am personally determined to see all children flourish here. I also value enormously the links between school and home, success being built on strong partnerships with parents and ourselves. It was clear that this could create something purposeful to benefit others. Challenging conventional boundaries and combining differences revealed a rich and resourceful seam of learning and creativity. There is an apparent gap between creativity and logic; it does not have to be that way. There is an imaginary space between the past, the present and the future. The imagined space is a flaw in perception: we all know that our past and future reside in our present. There is an outmoded belief that our personal lives and professional lives are distinct from each other. Yet, we all remain at the centre of both. When we bridge these gaps, rattle our perceptions and challenge outmoded beliefs, new opportunities reveal themselves, often in surprising and exciting ways.

As part of this we have established the LRWA Liquid Applied Membrane Training Centre, in conjunction with the National Federation of Roofing Contractors and the Construction Library; created online training modules in liquid waterproofing in conjunction with the National Federation of Roofing Contractors and Construction Library; and provided a RIBA approved online CPD to educate specifiers. We provide technical guidance for specifiers through Guidance Notes and the LRWA Code of Practice, and our members work together to ensure liquids are represented within industry standards such as the BREEAM Green Guide to Specification. Through partnerships with other roofing trade associations, the National Federation of Roofing Contractors and the Institute of Roofing, the LRWA is working hard to move the flat roofing industry forwards and ensure quality products with quality installations.

Over recent months, much thought has been given to our key educational priorities, as we seek to enhance every aspect of our provision. Our commitment to deliver this vision is unwavering and there is a great sense of excitement as we set our compass to make further progress. For such depth of ambition there is also a need to ensure that we have the appropriate infrastructure to support our educational vision. Consequently, we have commissioned a detailed analysis of current facilities against future requirements. Although new buildings will be introduced where appropriate, the aim is to redevelop existing spaces where possible and to minimise new construction. This approach significantly reduces disruption on the site and allows for projects to remain cost-effective and environmentally sustainable. Having an infrastructure plan to support our educational vision ensures that we avoid piecemeal developments over the coming years, which could otherwise result in a poorly considered future site. It also allows us to prioritise key developments based on cost, condition and need. With the repurposing of some existing spaces certain projects will need to be prioritised to allow space for subsequent developments to take place. The rate that proposed projects are delivered depends on the future performance of the School, the wider economic climate and the required planning consents. Our highly experienced Leadership Team and Governing Board will work with ambition balanced with measure. Excitingly, this summer has already seen the full refurbishment of five Senior Block classrooms, spaces designed specifically for modern teaching and learning. Plans are also already in progress for the next phase of works. Indeed, for over twenty years our founding school, Two Mile Ash School had worked with very secure, high-quality partners in their ITT School-Based Partnership, supporting newly formed Trusts in turning schools in difficulty around and created our CPD programme to support the development of leadership and continual professional development both locally and nationally. There was a very strong track record of school improvement led by high performing leaders who shared a common vision. Developing a Multi-Academy Trust with like-minded schools and their leaders meant that our vision could circulate further, ensure the impact of our work reached out to more children and more staff benefited from high-quality development and learning from each other. Since 2016 we have achieved great success. We can quantify our success in Ofsted reports, performance data, financial spreadsheets and our recruitment and retention figures. WHAT IS THE HAZ? Blackpool’s Heritage Action Zone project is a partnership between Blackpool Council and Historic England. The project is aimed at using Blackpool’s heritage as a catalyst for bringing new and diverse uses to the town centre and giving a new relevance for both local communities and visitors alike. There are two different areas of focus in the project. FOCUS 1 The first is centred on historic buildings and how heritage can be used to improve the look and feel of the high street by restoring and enhancing historic buildings. This element builds on recent improvements in Topping Street, Edward Street and Deansgate in restoring buildings and their commercial frontages. The biggest focus of this part of the scheme is the Church Street Frontage of the Winter Gardens, where work to restore the Victorian commercial frontages to Empress Buildings has already begun. Other projects include the conversion of an Art Deco building on Topping Street to provide a community creative hub and converting part of the former Black’s building on Edward Street into live/work units where local artists and creatives can rent studio and retail space with living accommodation above. FOCUS 2 The second area is the implementation of a cultural programme and this is specifically to bring new activity to the high street and to engage local communities in creative activity. This programme is already working on delivering a regular market for local creatives and artists and setting up taster workshops for local people to try out different creative activities. Future work will look at performance, film and creative workshops as well as talks and tours focused on heritage and the past, present and future of Blackpool’s town centre. THE ZONE Blackpool’s High Street Heritage Action Zone is focused on a section of Church Street containing impressive groups of mid to late 19th Century public and commercial buildings and a wealth of incredibly diverse heritage assets some of which are of national and regional significance. The Grand Theatre and the Blackpool Winter Gardens and the areas around them form the main focus of this project. It also includes Cedar Square and parts of Edward Street, Topping Street and Deansgate. The historic built environment in Blackpool and in the identified HAZ area has been recognised as having significant economic benefits not just in terms of retail or visitor economy but through the potential to impact on the quality of life for local residents and the quality of experience for our visitors. The quality of the historic built environment within the proposed Blackpool HAZ promotes ‘civic pride’ acting as a reminder of how Blackpool has evolved historically.
