When we started Nimbus Learning, we looked to solve what we saw as a gap in support for students such as ourselves. Our peers would reach out for help but would be faced with a multitude of obstacles to access student success services. We watched as they put time and effort into finding help (whether that be finding tutors, mentors or other support) on top of an already intense workload, juggling school, jobs and family responsibilities. We watched their health, wellbeing and success suffer as a result. When we connected with administrators to try to understand the problem, we saw ambitious and dedicated offices spending a significant amount of time every day on repetitive, time consuming tasks. Tasks like emailing to match students with the right mentor, recruiting tutors, and tracking hours and time sheets. Over the years we have honed Nimbus Learning’s services to make student success services more accessible while cutting down on the administrative workload. The Nimbus Platform centralizes tutoring, mentorship and advising programs into one place, where service providers can make their availability known in a few steps and students can book what they need at the click of a button. We help tutors develop the tools they need to succeed in their first jobs, empower administrators to see every aspect of their program in seconds and guide future planning based on in-depth analytics. We now work with administrators at over 25 schools, representing a quarter of a million students, to reduce the time that they spend on managing their student services by 52%. That return on time allows them to actually grow their services instead of just maintaining them and what we see are efficient, budget-saving programs that provide more value to students, help students do better academically and, ultimately, help them succeed.

Join one of our Lovely, lively language classes for adults. We have 500 classes in the UK, just waiting for you to learn French, Spanish or Italian for fun!At the time, I was teaching in an FE college, and in a Primary School and studying for a PGCE in adult education. I quickly realised that many of the games and interactive techniques that the children enjoyed could be adapted for adult pupils. I decided to trial a language course for adults where the focus was on fun and conversation, rather than results and written work. So in 2007 I created French for Fun and held my first classes in Newcastle-under-Lyme. Through trial and error, I came up with a regular weekly format that worked and incorporated the learning theory from my PGCE. The classes are now built around a series of conversations, so everyone gets up and talks in every lesson at the same time (no trembling in front of the class). In January 2010, after enrolling our 60th student, I decided to see if French for Fun worked with other languages. In March 2010, Sally and Alejandra started to translate the programme in to Spanish with great success and we have also finished the Italian translation. I also started to offer licences to other teachers, training them to use my materials and supporting them to set up their own language teaching business. We now have 100 teachers dotted around the country and we’re training more all the time, so there will be a class coming to somewhere near you soon. Yippee! a-jing Ch’uan Internal Chinese Boxing School was founded in 2002 by Nasser Butt - Senior Instructor and student of Erle Montaigue (Masters Degree, China). Our aim is simple: To reintroduce the destructive power of Martial Taijiquan ( Tai Chi Chuan ) as its founders intended it to be - for combat, alongside Baguazhang and Xingyiquan and other traditional Chinese Kung Fu Systems. Our methods are simple and realistic, yet, brutally effective! Powered by fa-jing (explosive energy), the motor of the internal arts and utilising our knowledge of Dim-Mak, inherent within the system, we learn how to repeatedly attack the most vulnerable points of the human body to devastating effect! From day one we learn about distance, timing, balance, co-ordination and natural body movement, through a myriad of single and two person drills, as well as the classical forms. We learn how to gain and develop fa-jing over a short distance, as well as how to access and utilise our reptilian brain in order to survive. Through hard training we develop an understanding of the martial principles “hidden” behind the forms as opposed to learning “exotic” techniques, which can and will lose you fights! That's why a majority of martial artists fail against good street fighters! Techniques are for the dojo... behind every technique is an underlying principle, it is this that one needs to absorb, after which the technique becomes redundant! Most martial artists, unfortunately, never get beyond the technique! If one understands the principles, thoroughly, then they will no longer have the need to remember techniques as the body will move instinctively and deal with the threat appropriately. By preparing the body for combat, we become healthier, physically and mentally, as well as internally and externally. This is how the legendary healing powers of Taijiquan ( Tai Chi chuan ) can be achieved.

Berkshire Outdoor Education Trust

The Berkshire Outdoor Education Trust was founded in 1977/78. The original purpose of the Trust was to locate and operate an Outdoor Education Centre for the use of Berkshire school children. The Trust was started with the active encouragement and support of Berkshire County Council and its then Director of Education, Peter Edwards and the late John Wood Griffiths an officer in the Berkshire Education department. The Trustees raised and borrowed the money to buy an existing centre from Glamorgan County Council in the small settlement of Rhos y Gwaliau in the Snowdonia National Park, close to the market town of Bala. In the early years Berkshire County Council paid the teachers’ salaries and gave an annual grant towards the other teaching equipment that was needed, mainly protective clothing. The Trustees managed the centre, hired and paid the domestic and maintenance staff and settled all other expenses including food and heating costs out of the fees charged to attendees. With teachers’ salaries paid by the LEA the additional amount needed to be charged to pupils was quite modest. Over time, however, the level of subsidy given by the County Council was reduced and when in 1998 the 6 Unitary Councils replaced the County Council the subsidy was phased out completely. In consequence fees had to rise considerably. It was at this point that the Trustees decided to sell the centre to the present owner, who had been a teacher at the centre for some time previously. The trust then invested the proceeds of sale and now use the income to assist the most financially disadvantaged young people in the County enjoy the benefits and experience of time spent in outdoor educational activity.

Windle Trust International (WTI) challenges poverty and inequality by expanding access to and improving the quality of education and training, for communities affected by conflict, displacement, neglect or discrimination. WTI is dedicated to reducing inequalities in access to high quality education for these communities, particularly for women and girls. We have a specific focus on increasing access to education for conflict-affected communities seeking to reach children and young people who have been forced to flee or who have been denied education because of the chronic marginalisation that so often accompanies conflict. With offices in Sudan, South Sudan and the UK, we combine local knowledge and expertise with international contacts and a global perspective. This is especially important in our scholarships programme, where we work in partnership with some of the UK’s outstanding universities to provide opportunities for access to world-class teaching institutions. Reflecting our values we work across the breadth of the education sector from primary schools to the tertiary sector. Our commitment is to work with communities in all their diversity – girls and boys, refugees and citizens, teachers and school management committees.
