Why Is It Important?
Nursing documentation is the cornerstone of best practice. It serves many diverse, complex and important functions from ensuring consistency of clinical care and good communication between practitioners, to providing evidence in a court of law that patients have received appropriate, high-quality, evidence-based care… or, indeed, that they have not. Why Is It Important?
It is estimated in the UK there are at least 90,000 people with long term urinary catheters (using them for three months or more).
Catheterisation is a common procedure, yet it carries many risks including trauma, urinary tract infection, encrustation, urethral perforation, bladder calculi neoplastic changes, and those with spinal injuries there is the risk of autonomic dysreflexia.
About 1 in 5 people who stay in hospital are fitted with a catheter, sometimes just as a matter of routine rather than requirement. It should therefore be the therapy of choice only when all other interventions are deemed to be inappropriate or have been unsuccessful.

Every 5 seconds someone in the world will die of a stroke (World Stroke Campaign 2016). Registered nurses and carers are professionally and personally accountable for their actions and any omissions in care; this includes decisions he or she makes to administer or withhold prescribed medicines.

Why Is It Important?
Effective medication management requires knowledge, skills and competence in order to preserve patient safety.
All members of the multidisciplinary team have a vital role to play in medicine administration and management: from the pharmaceutical companies that trial new medicines and ultimately manufacture them, to the doctors and other professionals who prescribe them, the pharmacists who dispense them, and the nurses/carers who administer them.
Errors in any aspect of the process of medicines management can result in catastrophic outcomes for the patient. According to the Department of Health (2013), at least 11 people died in the NHS in 2012 because they were given incorrect prescriptions and 8 per cent of all hospital prescriptions contain errors.

Good oral health is important for eating and drinking, communication, the absence of pain and infection, and paramount for dignity and comfort. There is increasing evidence linking poor oral health to systemic diseases including cardiovascular disease, diabetes and hospital acquired pneumonia.

Why Is It Important?
The 2009 Parkside Nursing Home tragedy marked a turning point in raising awareness for pressure area care training. 5 residents within their care died between July 22nd and August 6th as a direct response from pressure ulcers developed during their admission. 
Since 2009 various initiatives have been introduced, however incidents of pressure ulcers remain at a disappointingly high level. Each year in the NHS in England, just under a quarter of a million patients develop a new pressure ulcer with, on average, 2000 newly acquired pressure ulcers developing each month (Public Health England, 2015). 
Pressure ulcers are the result of tissue damage caused by diminishing blood supply to the skin, usually because the area has been placed under pressure (NPUAP/EPUAP/PPPIA, 2014). It is felt 95% of all pressure sores are avoidable.

How do I attend?

EITHER -
CLASSROOM OPTION - Attend one of our scheduled classroom locations, completing your Introduction to Phlebotomy Course over 2 days. You will also complete your Advanced Training at the end of the first day and your Competency Training at the end of the second day.

Our Introduction to Phlebotomy and Advanced Phlebotomy Training Kits are supplied at no charge when booking our virtual classroom training option.
If you would like to add one or both of these kits to your classroom training option then these are available to add at time of booking. Our comprehensive training kits each mirror the same equipment and supplies used in the classroom and both include detailed video tutorials, allowing you to continue to practice and "hone" your skills after you have completed your practical training.

VIRTUAL CLASSROOM OPTION- Complete your theory training online at home or work, then join us for a one day Zoom session to complete your Introduction to Phlebotomy virtual classroom training, followed by your Advanced Training in the evening of the same day. You have the option to add a classroom-based competency session, awarding a CPD Accredited Geopace Certificate of Competency, at time of booking.

Our Virtual Classroom option includes two very comprehensive training kits - one for your introductory course and one for your advanced course. Kits are included at no charge (normally £79.95 each) and are yours to keep and to continue to practice with after you have finished your courses. The equipment and supplies included in your kits are the same as those used if you choose the classroom option.

Our Route to Competency Masterclass - Live Blood Sessions can only be completed in a classroom environment. This is included when you book a classroom option. When booking the virtual classroom option you can choose to add this at time of booking. You will receive a voucher code to enable you to book onto any upcoming dates or locations. For most of our two day course we run our competency training at the end of the second day and therefore you should be able to complete your full training programme with us over two days.

M5 - Indications and Advantages:
When to cannulate, infusion types and benefits over
alternative infusion routes. Continuous and intermittent infusion.

Complications of pVAD insertion including examples of
infiltration, haematoma, extravasation and transfixation.
6 - VIP Score:
Understanding and using the Visual Infusion Phlebitis score.
7 - Equipment - overview:
We take a look at all essential equipment required for PIVC.
8 - PRACTICAL SESSIONS:
Multiple practical sessions throughout the session.
9 - Fluids:
The importance of understanding fluids. Includes detailed overview of: maintenance fluids, Hartmann’s solution, Colloids (and risks), blood products.
10 - Infusion Rates:
Calculating infusion rates and drops per minute.

collected at body temperature. Procedures for each group - collection notes, analytic time, optimal collection time and notes for each group.

Using the Monovette system in aspiration mode - correct use and applications.
Using the Monovette system in evacuated mode - correct use and applications.
4 - IR Vein Detector:
Demonstration of the IR vein detector for assisting in detection of difficult veins.
5 - Veins in back of hand:
Detecting suitable veins in the back of the hand.
6 - POC testing:
Point of Care Testing - use of glucose meter to demonstrate a typical POC test procedure. Correct use and overview of other POC test devices.
7 - Using lancets (finger collection)
We look at the correct use of lancets for POC testing and whole blood micro-collection.
8 - Using lancets (heel collection)
We look at the correct use of lancets for neonatal blood spot tests (Guthrie Test).
9 - Capillary collection
Using glass capillary tubes for micro-collection. Correct use and handling.
10 - Microtube collection
Correct use of BD Microtainers (and similar micro-collection bottles) - collection and handling.
