Hello and welcome to The Balance Rooms Yoga and Wellness Centre, which opened in Pickering North Yorkshire in the Spring of 2019. My name is Chantelle Dawson and I am the owner and founder of The Balance Rooms. I am originally from Vancouver Canada (where yoga is in our blood!), but I have lived in England for many years in the past decade, in both North and East Yorkshire. Having married a Yorkshireman in 2007, we have spent time in both of our native countries, and settled on Pickering as the perfect place to raise our two children. We are thrilled to be a part of the local community and we are truly excited to add a flavour of health and wellness to Smiddy Hill. My inspiration for The Balance Rooms comes from a long history of yoga practice (my first yoga class was in high school back in 1996) and a desire to have an integrated health and wellness centre that caters to anybody hoping to enhance their overall wellbeing. I believe that true health stems from finding a balance between our minds, our bodies, and our spirits. You cannot simply nourish one of the three, you must tend to each with loving care. The Balance Rooms will help you do just that!

I embarked upon a career in Nutritional Therapy after discovering the benefits of nutrition in supporting my own personal health issues including Graves’s Disease, Hyperthyroidism and Generalised Anxiety Disorder. After working and playing very hard in London and burning the candle badly at both ends, it should have really come as no surprise when I started experiencing some very unpleasant symptoms. I felt so out of control and at a loss of what to do. I turned to nutrition and various alternative therapies and was astounded at the results. Fast forward a year and I’d left my marketing career and began studying for a Masters in Nutritional Therapy at the University of Worcester. I am now a registered Nutritional Therapist and feel very humbled to be able to support individuals in improving their health and wellbeing. I have a very back to basics approach and like to make sure that you actually understand what’s going on and why we’re doing what we’re doing. I am know for my maintaining calm (in most) situations and transfer this into my client work. My aim is to leave you feeling confident in your ability to create long lasting changes and importantly more knowledgable in taking control of your health.

This project is Walthamstow born, Walthamstow grown and Walthamstow based. Inspired by the creative blood running through its heart and community spirit which binds us together. The driving idea behind Make and Create is a desire to bring people together to encourage creativity and community. Have you ever uttered the words "I wish I was more creative?". Then you have come to the right place, my friend. Make and Create project boxes are designed to remove barriers to creativity, by providing you with everything you need to make something useful or beautiful. Or both. Now wouldn't that make our old pal William Morris happy? Creativity is a verb. Not a quality you are born with, but an action. Creativity is not about talent. It is about doing. It is about courage. It is about absorbing yourself in something outside yourself. A release. A distraction to the constant internal hum. A form of meditation. Which brings me to the other reason I set up this project. Mental health. In a world where we spend so many hours of our day on social media, comparing our lives to the lives of others, it's easy to get caught up in the illusion that we are not good enough. Not beautiful enough. Not fit enough. Not adventurous enough. Put down the phone. Turn off your TV. Pick up a box. Make and Create E17 run workshops and private events across London. Founded by Cliff Bura in 2008, Diesel Gym was born in an area steeped in a rich combat sports history – London’s East End. Throughout its existence it has prided itself in developing international competitors and champions across all of disciplines its practices – true “school of excellence”. From its Muay Thai practice which grew from the legendary Grandmaster Sken’s Sitnarong camp to Eddie Bravo’s world famous 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu system (a no-gi specific grappling system designed specifically for MMA and utilised consistently by many competitors in promotions such as the UFC, Bellator and ONE Championship). Its wrestling practice and system is one Diesel has developed throughout the years to succeed in the MMA arena. All our Martial Arts practices are supported by Excel Strength & Conditioning who are there to build and maintain strong healthy athletes. While Physical Defence Physiotherapy are there as our inhouse physiotherapy support to bring members back to full fitness when needed. Despite Diesel’s long and successful competitive history, the majority of its members train for purely fitness, self defence or personal development reasons. Complete beginners are welcomed and nurtured as importantly as its professional athletes in a true community spirit. In 2019, Diesel Gym became a non-profit organisation, investing profits back in to its own community projects in Newham in areas such as sports for all, mental health wellbeing and youth crime.
