What you'll do Encourage nature into your garden by making your own bird box or bug hotel, all from recycled materials. Your design can be based entirely around what you’d like to attract to your garden, from birds to bees. You’ll finish with your own completely unique piece for the garden. Your hosts, Scott and Sue, will guide you through everything you need to know, from the tools to use to how to prep your recycled material. They'll be happy to help with ideas big or small and will have example designs to hand and lots of inspiration. You’ll be creating in Scott’s heated workshop, fully equipped with everything you need and with lots of space for building. At the end of your experience you’ll get to take home a bug house to be proud of, as well as leaving with the skills to create other upcycled pieces. Facilities WiFi Refreshments available Toilets Parking Child friendly (0-16) COVID-19 guidelines As you arrive you’ll need to confirm that you’re in good health and your temperature will be taken. Please bring a face mask as you’ll need to wear one at certain points during your experience. Face shields will be optional to wear for the rest of your time in the workshop and these will be provided. All workspaces will be fully sanitised and there will regular hand washing throughout. On the day You don't need any previous woodwork experience, just some enthusiasm! Please wear old clothes (or something that you don’t mind getting damaged or torn) and sensible, closed toe footwear. Students who complete the PV201L workshop will be able to: Perform power and energy calculations Obtain and apply specifications for PV modules and determine their performance given various environmental and operating conditions Safely operate various types of digital multimeters Diagram and determine the power, current, and voltage characteristics of PV modules in different series and parallel configurations Install various mounting systems (ground, pole, roof, and trackers). Decipher balance-of-system equipment specification sheets to determine the critical information needed for system design Install a residential grid-direct system including the array, inverter, circuit conductors, and overcurrent protection Safely operate equipment grounding, system grounding, and components and conductors used for grounding Work with wires and components on schematics of residential grid-direct systems: disconnects, inverter, equipment grounding conductors, ungrounded conductors, grounded conductors, the grounding electrode(s), and the AC and DC system grounds Identify potential safety hazards and demonstrate the proper use of personal protective equipment for working on grid-direct PV systems List the order of installation, commissioning, and decommissioning of a grid-direct PV system Note: This class is a great complement to PV301L, the Solar Electric Lab Week (Battery-Based).

We run a very welcoming and supportive environment, so whatever level your skills are at, you will always feel encouraged and supported by all to develop your ability further. Class size: We have 9 jeweller’s wooden workbenches in our workshop, however our term time classes always run with 6/7 students. 2 CATCH UPS are permitted over summer terms, meaning if you miss any classes due to holidays, you can catch these up on other sessions – it is not guaranteed we will have sessions available, however most sessions run with a space to accommodate a student on a catch up. Please make us aware of absences in advance. What is included? All tools and consumables are supplied Light refreshments are provided The cost of this course does not include materials. What to bring: For safety reasons, during each class, you are required to wear appropriate footwear, we request that no open toed shoes are worn within Workshop 925. Long hair should also be tied back when working with the equipment. You may also wish to bring a notebook. We have handouts for many demonstrations, but there are always many tips and tricks given verbally by the tutor, which some might like to keep note of. Please bring any, snacks and drinks to each session if you require refreshments.
