I was first drawn to the healing power of movement in 2008 during my
undergraduate degree in Contemporary Dance. I studied therapeutic movement and
its effect on emotion. I was lucky to have been invited to visit Kaagvere in
Estonia, to volunteer at an institution described as a boarding reformatory
school for girls. Many of the young people I encountered here had been exposed
to past traumatic events in some cases severe life changing experiences and as a
result many faced mental health challenges. It was very humbling to be witness
to this short part of their healing journey during my stay in Estonia. I worked
alongside a dance and movement therapist to lead daily movement, dance and
breathwork as a way for these young people to express emotion, to forge safety
amongst their peers and to ground themselves when triggered. I continued my
professional training as a dancer for some years after graduating, but this
experience stayed with me and very much influenced my journey to becoming a Yoga
Teacher and later Yoga Therapist
