Mental Health First Aid Course

5.0(1)

By First Aid for Life

This mental health first aid training course will teach you how to recognise warning signs of mental ill health and help you develop the skills and confidence to approach and support someone, whilst keeping yourself safe. We help you develop resilience, learn new ways to cope with stress, advise on sleeping better and equip you with a wealth of resources to be able to confidently help someone struggling with their mental health. This online qualification will provide you with the knowledge to spot specific warning signs that an adult or child could be struggling with a mental health condition, it explains how to initiate a supportive conversation, explore healthier lifestyle choices and links to the wealth of additional support available if someone needs further help. Ideal for individuals needing additional help and guidance to support their mental well-being, for those looking to introduce positive mental health practices to their workplaces, for teachers and support staff and friends, family and colleagues wanting more information on this vital topic It is estimated that around 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health condition at some point in their lives. For many, work is a major source of stress. 1 in 6 employees experience common mental health problems in the workplace. Businesses can support people with their mental health and create more positive and productive working environments as a result. Unfortunately, despite recent campaigns and advances, there still remains a level of stigma and fear of discrimination around mental health conditions. Employees and school children may feel that mental health conditions will not be greeted with the same compassionate approach as physical illness. This should not be the case and the purpose of this course is to demystify mental health conditions and empower workplaces, friends and family members to provide the support and signposting desperately needed by those struggling with their mental well-being. The HSE have embraced the idea of mental health in the workplace and issued the following guidance ‘First aid needs assessment’ for businesses. They suggest that your first aid needs assessment should also consider whether it is beneficial to have personnel trained to identify and understand symptoms and able to support someone who might be experiencing a mental health issue. to when and how to encourage someone to seek appropriate professional help. In addition, we explore other ways to reduce stress and boost mental health and identify the multitude of self-help and support options available. The scope of this mental health first aid course is not learn to diagnose or treat mental health conditions as this should only be done by appropriately trained healthcare professionals. However, you will be guided in identifying signs someone might be struggling and we will equip you with a methodology to appropriately support them and a directory of people where you can signpost them for help. It is impossible to cover all eventualities within this course, or to equip you with the knowledge and skills to appropriately diagnose and treat in unpredictable real life situations. If you suspect serious illness or injury, you should always seek immediate professional medical advice. The Author has made every effort to ensure the accuracy of the information contained within the course, however this course is merely a guide and the Author does not accept any liability or responsibility for any inaccuracies or for any mistreatment or misdiagnosis of any person, however caused. Existential Dialogue 2025: "Difference" with Dr. Todd DuBose

By Therapy Harley Street

Sanity is privileged over insanity, which is stigmatized. A therapoet views differences without hierarchy, valuing each unique expression. We aim to explore the lived experiences on irregular perceptions of reality with an open mind. Each Saturday includes: a live dialogue between Prof. Ernesto Spinelli and an International Existential Therapist; a moment to share your thoughts and feelings with the teachers; and a final integration facilitated by Bárbara Godoy. This series of ten dialogues set out to explore the multifaceted dimentions and complexities associated with Existential Therapies. It attempts to engage with various interpretations of insanity through the lens of patients often painful, confounding, and deeply unsettling life experiences. Difference - between Prof. Ernesto Spinelli and Dr. Todd DuBose "Sanity and insanity have been situated in relation to each other on a hierarchical scale that privileges sanity over, beyond, above, and more than its “less than” subjugated copy, insanity. Framed in this way, insanity can only be stigmatized, devalued and pathologized, while sanity is that to which we are to strive, uphold, and genuflect. The therapoet as a phenomenological hermeneutic horizontalizes a spectrum of “sayings of suffering souls”, or “befallings”, which is the originally meaning of “symptom”, not as a pathogen to be excised. Countering supremacist hierarchies of sanity/insanity, or health/illness, the therapoet sees difference, not as deficient, but just different, anew, and not in relation to any centric norm, but just to other differences. The relation to other differences is a relative gradation, whose incomparability resists any kind of nothing-but-ism any more than a fish can be said to be nothing but a squirrel with fins, or dirt as nothing but dry water. The therapoet, therefore, attends to each showing or saying of the suffering soul, sufficient in itself, as it is, in its own way of presencing, by being with it, letting it be, without why.” Dr. Todd DuBose. Dr. Todd DuBose is a world-renowned, Distinguished Full Professor at The Chicago School’s College of Professional Psychology. He teaches philosophical foundations of practices of care, ethics, loss and mourning, psychology and spirituality, psychopathology, among other courses, all from a human science perspective, and with a particular focus on therapoetic care. He is a licensed psychologist, supervisor, consultant, and former chaplain, with over thirty-five years of experience. He holds degrees in continental and comparative philosophy of religion and existential-hermeneutical-phenomenological human science clinical psychology and integrates these approaches as a way of caring for such experiences as the impossible (no way out, boundary or limited situations), extreme experiences (such as psychosis, nihilism, suicidal and homicidal ideation), and the taboo (the places no one wants to go: the unwanted and unacceptable, unsayable, unforgiveable, forbidden, and irreverent). He regularly presents workshops in several international venues such as the Circulo de Estudios en Psicoterapia Existential, in Mexico City, Mexico, the Zhi Mian International Institute of Existential-Humanistic Psychology in Dali, China, and the Centre for Existential Practice in Melbourne, Australia. He is widely published and has written on caring for others in very difficult situations including traumatic loss, surviving the COVID-19 pandemic, and meaninglessness. He has also written a short dialogue with Miles Groth, edited by Loray Daws, called, Dialogues on The Soul of Existential Therapy, published by The Society for Existential Analysis. Most of all, he considers himself simply a fellow human being. Prof. Ernesto Spinelli was Chair of the Society for Existential Analysis between 1993 and 1999 and is a Life Member of the Society. His writings, lectures and seminars focus on the application of existential phenomenology to the arenas of therapy, supervision, psychology, and executive coaching. He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society (BPS) as well as an APECS accredited executive coach and coaching supervisor. In 2000, he was the Recipient of BPS Division of Counselling Psychology Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Profession. And in 2019, Ernesto received the BPS Award for Distinguished Contribution to Practice. His most recent book, Practising Existential Therapy: The Relational World 2nd edition (Sage, 2015) has been widely praised as a major contribution to the advancement of existential theory and practice. Living up to the existential dictum that life is absurd, Ernesto is also the author of an on-going series of Private Eye novels. How to overcome fear and political chaos

By Human Givens College

Using the lens of innate human needs to help resolve social and political conflicts, undermine terror agendas and promote peace CPD Certificate: 6 hours The world is becoming an increasingly unstable and dangerous place. More than ever before, anyone trying to tackle society’s problems, or help the traumatised victims of corruption and war, needs a greater understanding of the fundamental unit of society – the human being. There is a lot here that can be unpacked further... concepts that can be useful in the conflict resolution field. The whole thing about how to manage emotions in a dialogue process when you’re working in conflict situations, is fundamental. It’s a discussion we need to have.ROXANNA CRISTESCU, CRISIS MANAGEMENT INITIATIVE (FINLAND) Why take this course This unique online course, run in association with The Conciliators Guild, focuses on how to improve politics by involving a greater understanding of psychology in domestic and international relations. You will gain an increased awareness of what war, terrorism and bullying reveal about the human psyche and an improved ability to see through political and cultural assumptions, by recognising the underlying emotional dynamics driving behaviour. You will also discover the most accurate explanations available about the root causes of extremism in politics, radicalization, the refugee crisis and the growth of authoritarianism, due to the ease with which mass hypnosis is used throughout the world today. The Middle East serves as the primary case study – but the implications of the material covered are universal and provide powerful new directions for a way out of the chaos we currently find ourselves in. The course facilitators are John Bell and Ivan Tyrrell. I really find this course extremely important for acquiring knowledge of human givens principles and practical tips for how to implement them in my daily life as a diplomat… using the knowledge for improving the policies and the structures in which we work.EVA HORELOVA, POLICY OFFICER FOR SYRIAN AFFAIRS AT THE EUROPEAN UNION What will you learn an increased awareness of what war, terrorism and bullying reveal about the human psyche accurate psychological explanations about the root causes of political extremism, radicalization, social unrest, conflict, the growth of authoritarianism and more an understanding of how ISIS and other terrorist groups deliberately set about fulfilling key innate emotional needs to radicalize and recruit young people what this shows is missing in our society that makes it easy for them to do this – rectifying this could help prevent radicalisation a greater ability to see through political and cultural assumptions, by recognising the underlying emotional dynamics driving behaviour why conflicts seem intractable and how they can be addressed examples of success in conflict resolution – and the role of women and families why we’re all vulnerable to manipulation by the hypnotic conditioning techniques that politicians and the media around the world use today deeper insight into the causes of the refugee crisis a profound understanding of the essential psychological and emotional needs that have to be addressed on all sides if any real progress is to be made in negotiations essential information about the prevalent assumptions in our culture which can hinder policymaking greater effectiveness at conflict resolution in any situation powerful new directions for improving clear thinking about conflict and politics, and reducing civil unrest Who is this course suitable for? Anyone involved in conflict resolution Anyone working to prevent the radicalisation of young people Individuals, charities and groups working with and helping refugees Anyone concerned about the global rise of terrorism, fanaticism, radicalisation, polarised politics, civil unrest and the suffering of countless refugees Diplomats, policy makers and international negotiators Anyone interested in the Middle East crisis Civil servants, police, legal and other professionals involved in law and politics Educators and teachers concerned about radicalisation or the clash of faiths University tutors and students studying politics and diplomacy Anyone worried by the long-term effects of civil unrest and political chaos What’s included? 9 Videos 16 Quizzes Life-long access CPD Certificate Why we need a new direction… Waves of unease are sweeping the world. Our political life is reeling. The rise of ISIS, intractable disputes like the civil war in Syria, the Israel-Palestine conflict, the Turkish Kurd war and the looming dangers from Africa, America, Asia and the Far East are volcanic and affecting us all. But we are so conditioned that we resort to the same old habits to address these matters: exerting financial or military power; exhibiting paranoia towards outsiders or adopting technological solutions as if they were panaceas. However, experience tells us, with our track record of political failure in peace making and fighting corruption, that we are most likely looking in the wrong direction… Hope over despair The reason dire problems remain unresolved and continue to grow more complex is because we are not directing our attention to the main cause they arise from: the ignorance and mismanagement of basic human needs in society – especially those related to our natural emotional states. Changing economics, political structures or power balances will not curb the cruel violence or spread of terrorist actions whilst the people operating in those systems remain greedy, needy, and opportunistic. To find workable solutions we urgently need to take into account what lies behind our political and social problems – our innate human motivations and needs. To think otherwise is a tragic misdiagnosis. This course is dedicated to developing a process of long-term education about how to improve politics by involving greater psychological understanding in domestic and international relations – the only source of hope for the future. We invite you to participate in this endeavour. Meet your tutors John Bell John Bell is the Director of the Middle East & Mediterranean Programme at the Toledo International Centre for Peace. Read more Ivan Tyrrell Ivan Tyrrell worked for many years as a psychotherapist and now spends most of his time lecturing and writing. The attendees came from 13 countries and included diplomats, civil servants and conflict negotiators, plus practitioners of the HG approach working in education and psychotherapy. This online version is split into four modules which are broken down further into different sections containing films of the lectures given in English by the facilitators, John Bell and Ivan Tyrrell along with questions from the audience and contributions from attendees. Each film is followed by a short series of multiple choice questions which are designed to help you absorb and think about the material and ideas covered.
