anthony nolan

Ever since Shirley Nolan founded our charity in 1974, Anthony's legacy has given hope and a second chance of life to thousands of blood cancer and blood disorder patients. Anthony Nolan is born with a rare blood disorder called Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome. The only cure is a bone marrow transplant. None of his family were a match, so the search for an unrelated matching donor begins. The Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Register is established: the first of its kind. Today, it’s helped 22,000 people receive a lifesaving transplant. Before this, finding an unrelated stem cell donor was virtually impossible. Sadly, no match for Anthony could be found. He died aged seven, in 1979.

Previously known as Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant 2000, Bright Red has supported haematology treatment and research within the north of England since 1988. Thanks to our combined investment of over £6 million into haematology; diagnosis, treatment and research within the region has gone from strength to strength. The region is now the second largest bone marrow transplant centre within the UK, treating an increasing number of patients from outside the area. These patients choose to come to the north of England due to the high standard of care and number of specialists in the region. Our vision is to make the region the safest place in the UK, if not the world, to be treated for blood cancer. Bright Red aims to improve the lives and treatment of people with blood cancer across the north of England. Through care, research and education we are striving to beat illnesses such as leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma myelodysplasia and myeloproliferative diseases.

Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is the UK’s leading heart and lung hospital, treating around 50,000 patients each year. The Trust is currently rated 'outstanding' by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), from an inspection carried out in 2019. It became the first hospital Trust in the country to receive the top rating of 'outstanding' in each of the five main domains that the CQC assesses. Founded as a tuberculosis colony in 1918, Royal Papworth Hospital has established an international reputation for excellence in research and innovation. Since carrying out the UK’s first successful heart transplant in 1979, the hospital now performs more heart, heart-lung and lung transplants each year than any other UK centre. It also in 2015 became the first hospital in Europe to perform a pioneering type of heart transplant - donation after circulatory death (DCD) - and in 2022 performed its 100th DCD heart transplant, making it the biggest and most successful DCD heart transplant centre in the world. In addition to transplantation, Royal Papworth Hospital has the UK’s largest Respiratory Support and Sleep Centre (RSSC) and is one of five UK centres providing Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) to patients experiencing severe respiratory failure. It is also the only centre in the UK for a number of specialist services including Pulmonary Endarterectomy and Balloon Pulmonary Angioplasty (BPA). Royal Papworth Hospital is a member of Cambridge University Health Partners (CUHP), a partnership between one of the world's leading universities and three NHS Foundation Trusts. CUHP delivers world-class excellence in healthcare, research, clinical education and improves the health of people across Cambridgeshire, the East of England and nationally. In 2017, the hospital was granted Royal status by Her Majesty the Queen in recognition of its commitment to excellence in cardiothoracic care. Royal Papworth moved to a state-of-the-art building on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus in May 2019, which was officially opened by Her Majesty the Queen in July 2019. Since 2013, we (Sunil, Shipra, Sushmita and Ovishek) have been hosting the “Ipshita Memorial Charity Barbecue” around Ipshita’s birthday to raise money for several worthwhile causes both in the UK and Abroad. Through your incredible generosity, we have raised funds for many organisations including those dedicated to stroke & cancer sufferers, people with learning disabilities & mental health problems and a Renal Transplant Unit (Portsmouth, UK). In addition, we have volunteered and donated to several projects such as; HAVEN (Help a Village Emerge New) Medical Camps and SABUJ SANGHA in West Bengal, India.

We are the specialist national charity for people affected by cardiomyopathy, a condition that affects the heart muscle. Our vision is that everyone affected by cardiomyopathy should live a long and fulfilling life. Cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart muscle. It is a group of conditions that affect the structure of the heart and reduce its ability to pump blood around the body. It can have a devastating impact on the lives of people of all ages, including babies, and is usually inherited. Medical experts estimate at least 1 in 250 people (approximately 266,000 people in the UK) have cardiomyopathy. When people are first diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, they often feel overwhelmed by fear and uncertainty. Coping with the uncertainty of living with a life-threatening condition can put a serious strain on individuals and families. For those living with cardiomyopathy, ongoing symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pains and fatigue can make everyday life a struggle. With the right information, treatment and support, people with cardiomyopathy can manage their condition with medication and implanted devices. However, quality of life varies greatly, and for some, their symptoms will deteriorate and may lead to them needing a heart transplant.

Transpath Inc. is a unique diagnostics company providing central slide review by Dr. Kim Solez of kidney transplant biopsies for international clinical trials. Dr. Solez established the Banff Classification by which such biopsies are read worldwide with Dr. Lorraine Racusen in 1991, and he has been engaged in central slide review work since 1992. He and Dr. Racusen direct the Banff Allograft Pathology meetings every two years which establish and fine tune diagnostic criteria in solid organ transplantation. Assisting Dr. Solez in carrying out the work of the company are Laurie Cat Bennett, Vice President for Operations, Preeti Kuttikat, Coordinator (part time), and Stephen Trevoy, Accountant. The Eleventh Banff Conference on Allograft Pathology was held from June 6-10, 2011 in Paris, France.

The MAE Foundation’s mission is to provide support and resources to individuals touched by cancer in an effort to improve one's quality of life. The MAE Foundation will achieve this by promoting and providing Navigation & Survivorship Services to any individual affected by cancer. The MAE Foundation is founded in the name and memory of Mary Ann Ellison who lost her battle to lung cancer at the age of 59 in 2002. In 1997 Mary assumed the role of full time caregiver to her youngest son (25) when he was diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia and required a bone marrow transplant. She provided her unique brand of care for approximately 18 months continuously. She became an expert in oncology and her son’s biggest advocate. Her son credits her care as a critical component to his survival. Late 2001 Mary received her own cancer diagnosis. For her it would be stage 4 non-small cell lung cancer.
