Your tutor for the weekend will be the fantastic <a fr-original-style="" href="https://michellemateocrafts.com/" rel="noopener" style="user-select: auto; box-sizing: border-box; text-decoration: inherit; cursor: pointer;" target="_blank">Michelle Mateo</a>. Michelle is an experienced basket maker &amp; bowl turner, and member of both The Heratage Crafts Assocation &amp; The Basket Makers Assocation.
<div fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">This two day course will see you go from &#39;Log to Basket&#39;. Beginning with an Ash log, the weekend starts by pounding the ash by hand and then processing the splints yourself into the necessary pieces required. You&#39;ll then get the chance to split the splints further, as well learn knife techniques to prepare the ash for weaving.</div>
<div fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Next begins the basket, you&#39;ll learn about basic weave, and the importance of tension. You&rsquo;ll also get to understand so much more about the properties of Ash; its durability, its flexibility, strengths and weaknesses.</div>
Learning these skills will give you the foundations needed to not only weave baskets yourself, but also how to produce materials yourself, adapt future baskets to your own designs, and a guarenteed&nbsp; appreciation of the mighty Ash Tree.

<div fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Ash Splint Basketry has its roots in the indiginous cultures of North America, and many of the techniques used in the making of these baskets also originate from Europe.</div>
<div fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Due to the way Ash trees grow, pounding the logs delaminates them, enabling the harvesting of thin strips of wood. These are then worked further before being woven into baskets.</div>

Bark containers are one of, if not the oldest way to contain foodstuffs, liquids &amp; other goods.
In this workshop we will be using methods and materials that span back thousands of years into pre-history to create a beautiful, strong &amp; sustainable container from Birch Bark
This style of container is possibly my favourite. No glue, no nails, no modern materials. An ingenuous method of making which involves clever finger tab joints and friction. An immensely satisfying experience.
A history of the use of bark, roots &amp; wood, plus examples of harvesting, storing and working with these materials will lead us up to the main task of the day, creating your very own natural tupperware.
