Here are three reasons not to let go of screen time: 1/ It’s expensive. 2/ You might find yourself doing things that you don’t enjoy 3/ It can no longer be used as a babysitting or bargaining tool.   I’m sure there are many more reasons why parents decide to restrict screen use and find it one of the hardest things to relinquish control over when they move to unschooling.   It was certainly one of the last things that we let go off. We didn’t really explore releasing limits until my eldest was 5 year’s old (I think) We had probably relaxed things before that because it was easy when I was exhausted from having a tiny baby, toddler and young child with me all day long. We would all sit/ lie down/ sleep together in the living room in the afternoon whilst the TV was on. It was definitely used as a ‘babysitting tool’ whilst I rested. Honestly, this was ten years ago. We didn’t actually own a TV at the time and accessed streaming services on line. The children watched ten minute long cartoons and they didn’t automatically run onto the next episode so I had to wake up every ten minutes to select the next one! How things have changed in ten years!!   Not everything is bad about lifting screen restrictions but like most things it does take consideration. I wouldn’t advice doing it just because it’s the unschooling way. Especially if you feel uncomfortable with the idea.   Take your time. Do your research. Find out what unschooling families are doing instead (because it isn’t simply a case of lifting restrictions and leaving our children to it)    For every reason you find not to do it, there is an unschooling reason to do it.   It can be expensive but it doesn’t have to be and we can see it as an investment in our children’s education. You might find yourself playing apps or watching TV shows that you find frustrating or find dull but we relish the joy that our children get from spending time doing the things that they love. It can no longer be used as a babysitting tool or bargaining tool but it will deepen your relationship with your child and you can find other ways to meet your needs that don’t disconnect you from your child. We are beyond excited for our first-ever Arienas Collective exhibition! The exhibition is taking place in Scot-ART Gallery 1 on the 3rd floor of St Margaret’s House, 151 London Road, Edinburgh EH7 6AE from Saturday, 24 - Saturday, 31 May 2025 and is open from 11am-5pm each day. The exhibition is free to enter. You can find out more about the ‘For love or money?’ Exhibition 2025 theme, who will be exhibiting, and opportunities for meeting our creatives in person on our dedicated Exhibition 2025 page. We will be exploring how creatives balance making art they love with art they make a living from. The exhibition will feature original artworks alongside live demonstrations, tasters, workshops and talks. You will find a list of all the Exhibition Talks and Tasters below. The Talks usually last 30 mins, and the Tasters normally last an hour. Check the individual details for more information. There is a nominal fee of £5 towards the cost of materials payable for the Exhibition Tasters, and spaces are limited. The £5 is also fully redeemable against the purchase of a workshop space (collect your exhibition voucher at the end of your Exhibition Taster). Meet our creative team in person We know how much people love to meet exhibiting artists and makers in person, so as well as hosting Talks and Tasters, members of our lovely creative team will be working from the exhibition space throughout the exhibition. You can find out who is available, and when, on our Exhibition 2025 website page here. How to book a space on an Exhibition Talk or Taster All our Exhibition Talks and demos are free of charge. However, it would be helpful if you could book so that we have an idea of numbers. You can book your space using the booking links below - just select your choice of Talk or Taster and it will take you to the booking page. If it's already sold out, you can add your name to the waiting list. Our Exhibition Tasters have limited spaces. To secure your space we suggest booking in advance. Any remaining spaces will be made available to book on the day. Your booking includes free entry to the exhibition from 11am - 5pm, so you have plenty time to explore the exhibition! *If you are interested in turning your creative passion into a career, or are considering offering your own creative workshops, the talks marked with an asterisk may be of particular interest to you. **If you're visiting with children, the tasters marked with two asterisks may be of particular interest. We will also be running one or two creative workshops to let you discover the full Arienas Collective workshop experience: our focus on the well-being benefits of engaging in a creative activity; supporting you to release your inner creative; and teaching you skills and methods you can continue to do at home.
