History Northwestern State University was established in 1884 as the Louisiana State Normal School, an institution created specifically for the training of teachers, in a time when public education was an increasing priority across the nation. The location of the school is tied to the roots of the city of Natchitoches and is the oldest continually occupied site for higher education in Louisiana. When legislation was introduced in 1884 to create a state Normal School, local civic and business leaders marshaled support to purchase the 100-acre site of a former convent and school and offer it as the site of the new state school. The selection was announced in October 1884 and a short, two-month session began in March 1885 with an enrollment of 60 students. In 1921, the Louisiana State Normal School, which initially offered a 2-year degree program to prepare educators, began offering a 4-year educator degree program and was renamed the Louisiana Normal College. In 1944, the further expansion of degree offerings led to the school’s name being changed to Northwestern State College. In 1970, the college achieved university status and was renamed the title it still holds today: Northwestern State University of Louisiana. Ever-growing, Northwestern State also serves the region at its off-campus instructional sites in Shreveport, Alexandria and Fort Polk. Since its inception, Northwestern State University has had a tremendous social and economic impact on northwest Louisiana and beyond. The NEN Trust was setup in 2008 to play the critical role of establishing an entrepreneurship ecosystem in a large number of tier 1 and 2 academic campuses across India. The goal was to enable young people on campuses to ‘do’ entrepreneurship while still on campus so that they could actively build aspiration, skills, confidence and networks which would increase their chances of starting new ventures successfully sooner rather than later upon graduation. Since its inception, NEN has worked with 500+ academic institutions including the founding institutions of its network IIT Bombay, IIM Ahmedabad, BITS Pilani, S P Jain Institute of Management and IBAB. NEN spent its initial years creating and establishing student E Cells actively running activities, competitions and start-up sessions across hundreds of campuses; trained 1500+ faculty in ‘doing experiential entrepreneurship programs’ including workshops and courses on campus; helped spur the development of 100+ entrepreneurship and innovation centres within its network institutions; and enabled 100,000s of students to get the exposure, and develop skills in entrepreneurship and venture creation. Today, NEN enables campuses and incubators to run virtual accelerated programs to maximise startup success. NEN is partnering with State startup policy makers, Govt. incubators, MHRD IICs and Innovation Labs. Louise is a Fellow of the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM), a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and is recognised as an approved training provider by the ILM. She is accredited by the Belbin Institute as a team roles facilitator and is qualified to administer the Strength Deployment Inventory® and Relationship Awareness Theory® which she uses to enhance individual and team development. She is also a qualified workplace mediator, able to help manage and resolve workplace conflict. Kate Harper MSc MA PGCE MCMI CIPD Kate is a former senior Army officer and professionally qualified learning and development practitioner. She is a proven leader with more than 25 years' experience gained through working with public, private and voluntary sector organisations. She is passionate about developing successful leaders, people and teams, so that their talents are fully used and valued by their organisation. Kate is a member of the Chartered Institute for Personnel Development (CIPD) and a Chartered Member of the Chartered Management Institute (MCMI). She has a Masters degree in Management of Training and Development, a CMI Level 7 Diploma in Strategic Leadership and Development and is a qualified teacher. She is qualified to administer the Margerison-McCann Team Management Profile and Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) Steps 1 and 2, has completed a Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) Practitioner course and has diplomas in Business and Life Coaching.
