I am never happier than when sharing my love of spinning and all things woolly. My forte is long draw spinning, although I teach all methods. I was professionally taught in 1980s and have never stopped learning and sharing my skills ever since. My new book 'Hand spinning - essential technical and creative skills', is the only one in the world that explains long draw spinning at length and in easily accessible detail. It’s fun, fast, satisfying, and the way spinning used to be done before industrial production took over. Hand spinning is not about mimicking commercial yarn; it is about creating your own unique, signature, yarn. Yarn that is fit for the purpose and bears the name of the person who made it. Yarn made in your choice of fibre, using your chosen spinning method, in colours and textures that will put joy into your life. And that is only the beginning... further joys of knitting, weaving or decoration await. However, there is no reason why spinners can't just hang up their yarn for the pure pleasure of seeing it. Unlike a framed painting though, you do more than look at yarn to admire it. You need to touch it, grasp it, dig your fingers in, smell it, feel the sensuous warmth against your face.... As I say, hand spinning transcends the commonplace - my aim is to help and inspire people to discover this for themselves. The Spinning Barn is located on our smallholding in Norfolk where you are warmly invited to spend a day in tranquil surroundings while you learn to hand spin our gorgeous wool. We are passionate about preserving our nation's rare breed sheep and have chosen to keep the very rare North Ronaldsay sheep, which you may have heard of as the seaweed eating sheep. This is due to the way they have evolved to survive by eating the seaweed on the sea shores where they are confined for several months of the year on their native Orkney island. They come in such a fabulous range of colours but we have chosen shades of fawn and grey. You may also like to know that we keep all of our sheep for their whole lives. We love them all so much! In 2013 we introduced the unusual Icelandic sheep into our flock which have made a fabulous addition with their long, lustrous, dual-coated fibre. During your visit you will be able to meet our gorgeous sheep who will also donate their wool for you to spin during your workshop. Hello, I'm Ruth, a yarn spinner and spinning teacher based online and in the beautiful city of Norwich. I call myself an urban spinner. Spinning in the city at first sight has many limitations, I do not have the space or resources for spinning that living in the countryside would afford. Instead I make the most of living in a city and adapt spinning processes to the urban environment. The hints and tips I have learnt from years of spinning in this way give a unique perspective to my spinning workshops. I can still buy fleece from a farmer although I have no transport of my own. I can clean fleece though I have a tiny bathroom and no outside space to dry it. Spinning is not only possible but easy in these situations and my online courses will show you how. The Slow Yarn Spinner is the culmination of a 10-year fascination with yarn. My passion for Spinning has grown from a desire to make my own knitting yarn from sustainable materials to encompass the whole process of turning fleece into yarn. From choosing fleeces, cleaning them, processing, designing yarns and spinning them I love every step of the process. In 2019, I added to my practical knowledge of spinning though my MA dissertation researching spinning as living cultural heritage in Britain today. It is this love of materials, skills and heritage that I put into my workshops.

Cartmel Handspun is a studio based workshop facility in the Englaih Lake District. Run by spinner and weaver Elaine Ware, it was established in 2013 and has delivered courses to student from across the globe.

About My name is Daire (pronounced Dara), originally from Ireland but I have lived in Edinburgh for the last 8 years. I have always been interested in health, fitness and sport. I have worked in the industry in various capacities for nearly 10 years but I have been self employed for 5 years now. I am very passionate about helping people find time in their busy lives to become more active whether that is attending one of my classes or a private session with me. I aim to create a welcoming & non intimidating environment and all my classes are suitable for complete beginners. I offer classes & private 1:1 sessions in Kirkliston & surrounding areas.
