Coping with stress and uncertainty

Unfortunately stress seems to be a built-in feature of modern life. We are all trying to fit in too much with less time all the while societal and political challenges negatively impact us. Changing the system would be the long term solution…

But in the shorter term we can learn to cope with stress and uncertainty in a way that's healthier for our body and mind. This session will walk you through some simple but effective tools to better cope with the stresses of life. 

What you will get from this 60-minute session:

Strategies for understanding unhealthy stress coping mechanisms and gradually swapping them for healthier ones
Tools to connect with your body and relax your physical response to stress
A tool for identifying sources of stress and focusing your attention where you can make a difference
Breathing exercises to activate your parasympathetic nervous system - calming down the stress response
Support in action planning what stress busting tools you'll implement in your life

And we’ll end with a meditation to help you relax and take wellness into the next part of your day.

Setting workplace boundaries to improve your wellbeing

Many people struggle to set boundaries because of a niggling fear that they will be letting people down, upsetting authority or come across as difficult. But healthy boundaries are essential to look after our wellbeing and therefore our effectiveness at work. 

Some of the keys to setting great boundaries are knowing what you want (or don't want), why that matters to you and being able to communicate that to others in an assertive way - confident but friendly. And there are tools to help you achieve this. 

What you will get from this 60-minute session:

Understanding the different types of boundaries we set and understanding your current patterns and preferences.
Strategies for feeling more confident and assertive - ready to have workplace conversations about boundaries.
Guidance on how to assertively and diplomatically put boundaries in place and ask for what you want. 
Tips on how to say no in a way that feels comfortable for you
Support in action planning the boundaries you want to strengthen in your work.

Mental health challenges have steadily risen in recent years, which means that more of your colleagues experience anxiety than ever before - whether you know it or not. And each person's anxiety may show up in different ways. 

The first thing we can do to better support our colleagues is understanding anxiety. Then we can learn strategies to help people to slow their thoughts, relax the body and take a measured approach to their anxiety. When colleagues feel supported it means they experience greater belonging in the team and hopefully able to manage their challenges more effectively.

Research from the University of Central Lancashire in 2020 revealed that approximately 60% of emergency services personnel felt unprepared for the psychological impact of their job duties, especially when handling traumatic incidents. Additionally, a 2021 study by the Law Society found that many solicitors experience high levels of stress and burnout, with 70% of respondents reporting that the pressures of their profession significantly affect their mental health.

Based on the evidence-based method of Emotional Logic, this course will introduce you to a healthy adjustment process that avoids unhelpful coping strategies. Instead, it offers practical methods that align with your emotions and personality. Lucy Brownridge is Editorial Director at Wide Eyed Editions and Frances Lincoln Children’s Books, and formerly Thames & Hudson where she helped to establish the Children’s list. She specialises in highly illustrated picture books and non-fiction (including poetry) for children. She has commissioned and edited books which have gone on to win the Carnegie Awards, The British Book Awards, the Klaus Flugge Prize, the Blue Peter Prize and have been translated into over 30 languages. She has been editor to Alan Ahlberg, Quentin Blake, Mariajo Ilustrajo, Yuval Zommer and Children’s Laureate Joseph Coelho among many others. She is the author of The Fantastical Safari and The Cat Family series, and many other books for children.

In January 2024 alone, reports were published about the SRA taking enforcement action against 3 firms and 4 individuals for failure to comply with the Money Laundering Regulations 2017. The fines issued for these non-compliances total over &pound;570,000 plus costs. The absence of staff training, or requirement to complete additional training, was noted in a number of these cases.Many of the breaches resulting in enforcement action involved failures by the fee earners to conduct appropriate due diligence, adequately check the source of funds and/or wealth or recognise and report red flags.
