Geraldine is an artist who specialises in ceramics, and also works in other mediums including print. Her own work is mostly sculptural with a bird and animal and landscape theme. Trained at Epsom and Exeter Schools of Art in the 1980’s and gaining a BA.Hons in Fine Art (ceramics), Geraldine’s early career took her to Wales, where she spent time as an artist in residence in special schools, delivering art sessions and projects for children in special secondary education. She worked alongside teachers to design projects and also ran workshops on working with clay in the classroom.

My Name is Karen Hewitt and I am the face behind the name Inky Escapades I have always been an artist and crafter. I like nothing more than getting messy and creative and I love to introduce people to the amazing world that is Powertex! What is Powertex? I hear you ask Powertex is a universal medium which is both glue and paint combined and is a fabric hardener which enables you to create the most marvellous creations from fabric or natural fibres. Mixed with other products Powertex can create two types of clay and a myriad of textures which makes it a dream for mixed media projects. Powertex is Non Toxic, Water Based and Environmentally friendly. It has the capacity to introduce the child back into the adult with "Messy Play"! Powertex is a messy but very creative process. In this fast paced stressful world we live in it gives us the opportunity to just stop and breathe and engage ourselves in the creative process and forget all the other things on our minds for a few hours.

Our vision is to create a place where ideas and friendships flourish in a supportive artists' community. By sharing our resources and space, we make it possible for our members to enjoy all the benefits of their own studio, whilst in a superbly equipped and collaborative environment. Sharing makes the best use of valuable space and supports the protection of the environment. We are a members’ ceramics studio set up from scratch for working potters and professional artists. Our studio, beautifully designed with a Scandinavian touch and the highest quality equipment, occupies a large, open space off Newmarket Rd, and is within 10 mins cycling from the centre of Cambridge.

I have had an interest in Art for most of my adult life and having never studied it at school I was nervous of taking up any classes so late in life. However, by chance whilst trying to find local art classes I happened to stumble upon Back Room Art and I sent an enquiring email. From the very first communication Heather put me immediately at ease and gave me the confidence to go to my first class. I joined a wonderful group of people. Heather works well to ensure we are all included in the lessons, working at our own pace and with projects and materials we feel comfortable to use. Heather’s inspiration, openness and motivation have given me a confidence in doing something I never felt capable of doing. Our works are encouraged and praised and Heather’s communication with everyone is brilliant to ensure we all get something out of it. She listens carefully to our aspirations and helps us to achieve them with advice, suggestions and with realistic goals. The facilities we work in are relaxed, friendly and well stocked with all the artistic materials you could wish for, giving me a chance to use resources I would not generally have tried out at home on my own. Coming to this class has given me so much more than just the opportunity to create art; it has opened my eyes to art I would not normally have looked for, expanding my horizons and opportunities. It is the one thing on a Monday that I do look forward to." Her work is vibrant and it is clear she demonstrates her passion for all types of art in her teaching. I didn't want to be told what to do in an adult Art class, but I know much more about perspective and abstract technique than I ever did." The Alton College Foundation was established in 1999 to help the College provide facilities and equipment that could not otherwise be provided from government funds. Since creation we have raised over £600,000 which has bought equipment for the college, created a quiet garden for students, provided a mini bus for the college, awarded Scholarships to 375 students and provided bursaries and grants of over £120,000 since 2010. The Foundation is a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee and operates totally independent of the college.

From its origins in 1992, when the local housing association at that time allocated a tenement house to a group of residents who were keen to participate in the arts, Drumchapel Arts Workshop, (DRAW) has continued to hold a valued and valuable place in the local and wider community. Since those early days many developments and positive partnerships have evolved, and from our milestone achievement of obtaining charitable status in 2010, our recently established venue on the ground floor of a block of high rise flats offers an informal workplace in which those from the local community and beyond can express their creative potential. Originally DRAW was encouraged to seek funding through Urban Aid, and we are currently funded through GCC from an Integrated Grant Fund. Over the years a dedicated committee has worked to ensure a wide variety of interesting and successful programmes and projects are available to participants. The many statutory organisations and agencies with whom we have worked, including the NHS, occupational therapists, Momentum, Right Track and Careers Scotland continue to help us to open access to the arts and to widen the horizons of those who participate in the project. The sense of wellbeing, confidence and social integration which evolves from appreciating and sharing our cultural wealth is frequently acknowledged by our participants and we welcome and enjoy a diverse clientele.
