Needle-felting is a fascinating experience, watching creations taking a life and form of their own as you work. It is a very intuitive and tactile craft. Tools required are few and the materials relatively inexpensive. The work can be picked up and put down at a moment’s notice, and can be carried out almost anywhere. Michelle started teaching the craft eight years ago, holding regular workshops at venues across the country. She has now taught over 2000 people and her book on Needlefelting will be published in January 2024 by Crowood Press. Workshops are held in a very relaxed atmosphere - it’s been said that the laughs are as good as the course!  There are several regular venues all over the country or you can travel to Furzie's Workshop in Somerset or arrange for Furzie to travel to you.

I have had an interest in Art for most of my adult life and having never studied it at school I was nervous of taking up any classes so late in life. However, by chance whilst trying to find local art classes I happened to stumble upon Back Room Art and I sent an enquiring email. From the very first communication Heather put me immediately at ease and gave me the confidence to go to my first class. I joined a wonderful group of people. Heather works well to ensure we are all included in the lessons, working at our own pace and with projects and materials we feel comfortable to use. Heather’s inspiration, openness and motivation have given me a confidence in doing something I never felt capable of doing. Our works are encouraged and praised and Heather’s communication with everyone is brilliant to ensure we all get something out of it. She listens carefully to our aspirations and helps us to achieve them with advice, suggestions and with realistic goals. The facilities we work in are relaxed, friendly and well stocked with all the artistic materials you could wish for, giving me a chance to use resources I would not generally have tried out at home on my own. Coming to this class has given me so much more than just the opportunity to create art; it has opened my eyes to art I would not normally have looked for, expanding my horizons and opportunities. It is the one thing on a Monday that I do look forward to." Born and raised in Birmingham, Tom has always been obsessed with making things. This obsession continued right through school and on to London where he studied furniture making. It was whilst in London his unusual style prompted his teacher to suggest he study sculpture. Taking his teachers advice after completing the year, he moved back to Birmingham and began his sculpture degree in Wolverhampton commuting daily before opting to move to West Wales School of Art - where they teach the fascinating process of bronze casting - to complete his degree. After completing his degree, Tom once again moved back to Birmingham where he continued his sculpture practise alongside working with family to further refine the carpentry and woodworking skills he learnt in London before setting up by himself a few years ago. The relatively recent decision to start offering courses came about almost by chance. The positive experience Tom had in West Wales ignited a desire to want to teach his skills to others – something that became even more apparent after taking on a couple of apprentices. However, with business being so busy it wasn’t until the apprentices highlighted the lack of woodworking courses available in the Birmingham area outside of full-time college or university courses. It was at this point Tom realised that this would be a great opportunity to give those interested in woodworking a way in without having to commit full time.

"We encourage, enable, develop, mentor, facilitate, empower and support local creative arts practitioners from a wide range of backgrounds." Since our Foundation, in September 2014, we have staged over 120 exhibitions showcasing a varied body of work, by artists both emerging and established. Encompassing a diverse and multi-disciplinary range of artistic practices including: Painting, Sculpture, Printmaking, Illustration, Photography, Sound, Video and Performance Art. A comprehensive list of all of our past exhibitions can be found under 'Portfolio'. Our overarching ‘Philosophy’ is to actively encourage, enable, develop, mentor, facilitate, empower and support local creative arts practitioners from a wide range of background with a priority to engage in discussion around accessibility within the arts in relation to mental health, financial hardship and institutional bias. We have also provided work placements to a number of European students, via the Erasmus + and Gecko programme. Partnering with local Venues, Institutes and schools , we aim to develop a strong community that has access to free space, free mentoring and the ability to grow and learn from each others valuable experience and skills. The spaces are offered for hire and for free depending on the nature of the request and is offered to both emerging artists or collectives that deserve a space to explore and harness potential, or established artists with a strong visual aesthetic. Our initiative is to offer this space first and foremost to west-midlands based artists who wish to strengthen their local artistic community and create a discourse for regeneration. We curate approx one show per month in our two exhibition spaces and these are either from chosen submitted proposals or from exceptional and forward thinking artists that we find on our travels. In-between these exhibitions we encourage groups or collectives with a passion for community welfare and development to use the spaces for poetry , music, discussions, rehearsals , workshops or their own curatorial interests. “The best undergraduate department of art history in the country”: This is how New York Times art critic John Russell once described the Art History program at NYU. The Department was established to provide a rigorous and wide-ranging education in the many facets of the history and theory of art, a mission that its faculty continues to enthusiastically embrace. Students become familiar with global art from antiquity to the present. The Department offers courses in Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Modern, Contemporary, East Asian, South Asian, Islamic, Latin American, African, Oceanic, Pre-Columbian, and Native American art, treating not only painting, sculpture, architecture, and photography but also graphic media, manuscript illumination, the decorative arts, and aspects of urban design. The Department is one of the few undergraduate programs in the country that also features extensive offerings in conservation and museology. The myriad museums, galleries, and local architectural sites make New York City the ideal place in which to study the visual arts on site, in the flesh. Beyond New York, art history courses are offered at the university’s various abroad sites, such as Berlin, Buenos Aires, Florence, London, Madrid, Paris, and Prague. The Department offers two undergraduate majors and minors, one in Art History and another in Urban Design and Architecture Studies (URDS). The specific course requirements are outlined in detail on the Department’s website. Since an education in the history of art can be enhanced by a firsthand understanding of its making, Art History majors also are allowed to minor in Studio Art through courses offered in the Steinhardt School. The Department publishes its own student journal (Ink & Image) and has an honors program, which culminates in the writing and oral defense of an honors thesis during the student’s senior year. Art History graduates have proven exceptionally successful in securing positions in museums, commercial galleries, auction houses, and nonprofit organizations. Those who go on to undertake graduate study typically pursue careers as curators, conservators, and academic art historians at the university and college level. Students majoring in URDS are well prepared for graduate study in architecture, urban planning, and historic preservation.
