Our one-day Park Tool School Basic: Ride with Confidence Course is perfect for anyone looking to learn how to address common issues while out riding. It is suitable for people with little to no knowledge of bike maintenance. This course is intended to ensure that participants leave at the end of the day with the confidence to fix common problems with their bikes. The maximum group size is 7. Our fully trained mechanic will be on hand to answer questions as they come up, and there is plenty of opportunity for practice. This course is fully endorsed by the Bikeabillity Trust for mechanic certification! For those participants seeking a Bikeability accreditation, there will be an assessment after the training. Please note for all other participants there is no assessment.   Course Detail Basic Mechanical Skills – tools, stands, home shop set-up, tension & torquing bolts, lubrication, threadlockers & cleaners, health & safety Safety “M” check Tyres, tube & puncture repair (innertube replacement), with wheel removal and installation Looking after your drivetrain: lubrication, cleaning and wear of chains, rear sprockets and chainrings Disc brake systems – differences of cable vs hydraulic, rotors, basics of brake alignment, pad replacement Caliper rim brake adjustment and pad replacement for v-brake, dual pivot road caliper and cantilever Field repairs – what tools to take and tips & tricks to get you home! Please note that we will be concentrating on standard derailleur geared bikes. If you have a bike with hub brakes and hub gears you may find some parts of this course less relevant to your bike, though most things are transferable. If you have any questions or worries, please ask.   Price The course costs £96 per person and includes: All tools and equipment A bicycle for you to work on if required (although we encourage you to bring your own where possible) Participants taking the course for a Bikeability accreditation will have an additional £20 fee for assessment and administration. Please choose a course date below and fill out the form, you’ll then be able to pay online and further instructions for the course will be emailed to you. Refunds for courses are only given under exceptional circumstamces and never within 7 days of the advertised course. Please get in touch for further details.    Assessment For Bikeability Instructors The Bikeability assessment will include: Conduct an “M” check Check and correct tyre pressure Check and correct loose wheels, handlebars, or other parts Correct saddle orientation Identify poor braking and correct pad placement and cable tension Checking and correcting bike fit, including saddle and handlebar height, and brake/shift lever orientation Further Details Course participants must be 18 years or above. Island Riding Centre has 5* equestrian facilities and accommodation and a welcoming team to ensure that your riding experience and holidays are unforgettable. We opened in July 2017; we are a fully insured, licensed equestrian centre, ABRS accredited livery yard and horse riding stables with an indoor 60m x 25m sand school and an outdoor 60m x 40m sand school. We are a Pony Club Centre and are members of the Association of British Riding Schools. We are an RDA Accessibility Mark centre and have the island’s only para hoist, and a Changing Places Toilet cubicle – we passionately believe that riding should be accessible to all. Onsite we have a cafe, restaurant and children’s playground, we are an award winning holiday complex based on the Isle of Wight (a couple of miles off the south coast of England) with self catering cottages and safari tents. The Isle of Wight has a strong tradition of horse riding with hundreds of miles of bridleways, glorious beaches and trails with spectacular views. Tapping in to the Island’s popularity as a tourist destination, owners Paul and Louise decided on an equestrian complex combined with self-catering holiday accommodation, which would cater for everyone. Dulwich Riding School is approved by the Association of British Riding Schools and has recently been awarded a five star Health and Safety approval from our local Council, Dulwich Riding School was founded in 1961 by Mr James Thomas Bellman, himself an expert horseman and instructor who spent a lifetime with horses and riders. The late Mr Bellman passed on his knowledge and riding school to his daughter Linda Gray who has sadly now passed away too, she has passed the Riding School onto Jaye Montebello, her daughter, the current Manager and Proprietor. Jaye was the Manageress (now proprietor) and is still hands on along with other family members who are still running the stables, also part of the Bellman family. Ellie is part of the family who currently rides and instructs at our London riding school. Lynne is our Health and Safety Manager (she shouts the loudest) and Amelyne and Ishka have been with us on and off for years, `University and Equine College being their breaks, we specialise in nervous and novice riders and are brilliant with building confidence. OJ also part of the Bellman family is currently a Junior Instructor, Ellie and Jaye our instructors specialising in working with Advanced riders and Jumping Lessons. Bonnie, Alice, Lydia, Melissa, Neveah and Natasha are Junior Instuctors and are especially good with children and parties, they are voluntary although been with us for years, however, a couple of them will be full staff from September, watch this space. NO one instructor can be booked for a lesson due to rotas and schedules although we will do out best to accommodate where possible. Our staff, volunteers, working pupils and family give their time helping Dulwich Riding School flourish and maintain the standards Mr J. T. Bellman set. Lots of our team are volunteers, they are a strong a valuable part of our team and without them we could not maintain the standards and level of professional care to all our Riders and Horses at Dulwich Riding School. WHAT DRIVES US Passion and determination to uphold Dulwich Riding School's reputation and high standards that Mr Bellman attained. Each instructor feels very proud when a client passes an exam, or completes a successful course or just generally leaves the stables feeling a sense of achievement or just having lots of fun. The ultimate drive is to be part of 17 wonderful horses and ponies' lives, building bonds and being priviledged to do a job that we enjoy. Meeting new people, talking with old friends and generally networking within our industry. HORSES Currently 17 at present working horses, mostly stabled although all horses have access to our onsite small turnout paddock, and access to full turnout in Kent, park rides, pony camps and further turnout located off site for rotation and requirement.
