Book your place and we’ll send you the Zoom link the day before the event. BONUS Recording – the training is recorded, in case anyone experiences technical difficulties, so you also get a recording for a limited time afterwards to maximise your learning. Why take this suicide prevention course Suicide can be a difficult subject to broach and a daunting one to deal with – anyone working with distressed or depressed people wants to keep them safe, to give them the hope they need that circumstances can change for the better, and to provide the skills for coping until that comes about. When people can’t envisage an end to their difficulties, particularly in highly challenging times, a slump into depression can all too quickly spiral down into suicidal thoughts, plans and suicide attempts. The negative trance state of depression itself can beguile people into thinking that there is no other way out of their hopelessness. Thankfully, there is much we can do to help – as this indepth suicide intervention course shows. Tutor Malcolm Hanson has a wealth of experience at helping seriously distressed people get through difficulties which he draws upon as he takes you clearly through the steps to take when faced with anyone who feels suicidal. (He worked for 9 years as a psychotherapist in NHS primary care in an area of extreme deprivation, and for many more years since has seen patients referred by GPs, social workers, psychiatrists, police and probation officers for complex issues.) He has successfully helped clients experiencing multiple trauma (including veterans), chronic pain and terminal illness, clients struggling with uncertain asylum status or facing deportation, and also victims of human trafficking – a tragic range of circumstances in which even the most resilient may sometimes sink into despair. His compassion and understanding shine through this course as he shares with you what he has learnt, along with the latest psychiatric research and risk assessment strategies, to give you the knowledge and assurance you need to work confidently and respectfully with clients struggling to find reasons to stay alive. You will learn how to build in expectation of positive change from the start, have plenty of time to benefit from group discussions and will work through case scenarios with other attendees to help embed your learning. Suicide affects countless people, not only those directly involved, and is now the most common cause of death in men aged 17 to 34. “Meaning-Fullness” critiques traditional psychiatric diagnosis, advocating for an existential/phenomenological approach to mental health. We aim to explore the lived experiences on irregular perceptions of reality with an open mind. Each Saturday includes: a live dialogue between Prof. Ernesto Spinelli and an International Existential Therapist; a moment to share your thoughts and feelings with the teachers; and a final integration facilitated by Bárbara Godoy. This series of ten dialogues set out to explore the multifaceted dimentions and complexities associated with Existential Therapies. It attempts to engage with various interpretations of insanity through the lens of patients often painful, confounding, and deeply unsettling life experiences. Meaning- between Prof. Ernesto Spinelli and Dr. Jan Resnick “Meaning-Fullness aims to develop an alternative approach to traditional psychiatric diagnosis of psychopathology through an understanding of the existential vacuum and a phenomenology of language and the body. There is a growing epidemic of mental un-wellness even though there has never been so many psychiatrists and psychologists available. This contradiction demonstrates how a bio-medical approach is far too limited at best and a radical mistake, at worst. Through the use of theory, philosophical discussion and case studies, Meaning-Fullness seeks to elaborate how mental disturbance and emotional suffering, traumatic and dissociative experience, emptiness and meaninglessness, can be understood differently and then worked with in psychotherapy. When an existential/phenomenological perspective informs the therapeutic relationship, terms like treatment, healing, cure, recovery, growth and development, can be seen in a different light from the standard narratives and take on a wholly different meaning.” Dr. Jan Resnick. Dr. Jan Resnick is a senior psychotherapist, supervisor, and author. He has a PhD in Psychology (Psychoanalysis). As founder and Director of Training, he ran a Nationally Recognized and Accredited Registered Training Organisation called The Churchill Clinic for 18 years which became the largest such organisation in Australia for conferring post-graduate qualifications for training Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists. He was the Founding President of the Psychotherapists & Counsellors Association of Western Australia where he later received an Outstanding Achievement Award after serving 10 years on the Management Committee. He was an Editorial Advisory Board Member of the national journal Psychotherapy in Australia for 20 years and currently, an Advisory Board member of Blue Knot Foundation (formerly ASCA – Adult Survivors of Child Abuse). He is accredited by the Royal Australian New Zealand College of Psychiatrists to supervise psychiatry registrars in psychotherapy and has taught in the Advanced Psychotherapy Training Program. He has presented at many conferences including last year in Valencia, Spain for the International Association for Relational Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, also for the Mental Health Practitioners Network of Australia, and 3 times for the RANZCP Psychotherapy Section bi-national conference. He runs a supervision group for Psychiatrists practicing psychotherapy for the past 15 years and supervises Developmental Paediatricians at the State Child Development Centre in West Perth. He has presided over 4 mental health charities and has over 100 publications including two books. His book based on his clinical work as a couples’ therapist is How Two Love, Making your Relationship Work and Last. His latest book published by Karnac Books (Oxford) is called Meaning-Fullness, Developmental Psychotherapy and the Pursuit of Mental Health, an existential/phenomenological and relational approach based on his clinical work over more than 47 years. Prof. Ernesto Spinelli was Chair of the Society for Existential Analysis between 1993 and 1999 and is a Life Member of the Society. His writings, lectures and seminars focus on the application of existential phenomenology to the arenas of therapy, supervision, psychology, and executive coaching. He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society (BPS) as well as an APECS accredited executive coach and coaching supervisor. In 2000, he was the Recipient of BPS Division of Counselling Psychology Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Profession. And in 2019, Ernesto received the BPS Award for Distinguished Contribution to Practice. His most recent book, Practising Existential Therapy: The Relational World 2nd edition (Sage, 2015) has been widely praised as a major contribution to the advancement of existential theory and practice. Living up to the existential dictum that life is absurd, Ernesto is also the author of an on-going series of Private Eye novels. Understanding loss and the best ways to help This sensitive course gives you greater insight into our natural grieving process, what can go wrong, the myths about grief, and how you can support those going through it Accredited CPD: 6 hours Incredibly helpful online grief course, very informativeEMMA WARDROPPER Loss is a common human experience and major part of life – every one of us will face the loss of a loved one at some time in our lives. Grief and bereavement can hit us in other ways too – like when we lose someone through dementia, addiction or divorce, or lose something significant, like the ability to have our own children or our physical health. This online course helps explain the different ways people react to grief, offers guidance on the most appropriate ways to support people and will also help you with your own grief when the time comes. Véronique's compassion and own extensive experience of grief and supporting others really shines through Why take this course In our Western culture death and dying have largely been taken into the realm of professionals, with many of us dying in hospital. Death is rarely a part of our conversations. Many don’t feel comfortable around the bereaved, they don’t know what to say or do for the best, or what to expect when faced with a bereaved person. This can make the experience of being bereaved very lonely, particularly as there are also many misunderstandings around grief, which can sometimes make matters worse. Véronique is passionate about dispelling these myths and giving people a clear roadmap to demystify what is a normal, healthy response to the death of a loved one – and identify when professional help might be needed. As well as her own personal experiences of grief, she has supported countless others over the years through her professional role as a Human Givens practitioner as well as on a personal level. This compassionate online course, which is illustrated with case histories and packed full of practical tips, will help you feel more confident when supporting grieving friends, patients, family or neighbours – and leave you better prepared for what to expect in your own times of grief. What will you learn The common myths surrounding grief and bereavement – what’s true and what isn’t How differing cultural, religious and belief-based views impact on how people grieve What the science and the latest research tells us about the grieving process The 3 common responses to the death of a loved one When grieving becomes a problem; complicated, avoidant or delayed grief Grieving for someone who is still alive Two different sorts of crying Pathological grieving – how to tell if professional help is needed Guilt and grieving over the loss of someone you feel you might have helped, e.g. suicide, drug or alcohol related death Why our innate emotional needs (part of our ‘human givens’) have a protective role Essential ‘Do’s and Don’ts’ for those wanting to support an individual who has lost a loved one – and how these can change over time or depending on the context How the circumstances around a death can affect how individuals grieve The impact of sudden, unexpected death What to expect in the early days following the loss of a loved one The value and use of ritual The role of our emotions – and why they can come up again out of the blue, sometimes years later How to help children and teenagers deal with death Living loss: grieving over e.g. divorce, infertility, caring for a loved one who is terminally ill, estrangement from friends or family members, the loss of job, or status, freedom, hope etc. The effects of trauma on the process of grief and when to detraumatise the memory How depression and trauma can impact on grieving Practical ways to help someone immersed in grief Case history showing how a human givens therapist helped with extreme grief Help for those that are grieving Case studies: personal experiences of being bereaved and what helped Strategies to avoid being overwhelmed – dipping in and out of grief The use of targeted specialist groups (e.g. death by suicide, drugs, alcohol, the death of a child, of a life partner, cancer, sudden death, stillbirth, sepsis or Covid) and social media Finding meaning and purpose after loss Re-engaging with life Integrating the changes. Course Programme Part 1How and why we grieve Part 2What you need to know about grief and bereavement Part 3 Practical things you can do to help Who is this course suitable for This course is for anyone who would like to understand more about grief and the different ways loss can affect us, and to feel more confident in helping those who are bereaved. This practical workshop covers the unique challenges of working with complex trauma cases and gives you clear guidance on the most effective ways to help Accredited CPD: 6 hours Length: 1 day (9.30am - 4.00pm) Absolutely jam-packed with techniques/information and resources. Ros is superlative. A calm, confident and articulate trainer...J YAP, THERAPIST Why take this course Clients suffering from Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) or who have experienced trauma in a shutdown or dissociative state, can present unique challenges to practitioners working with them – but with the right knowledge and skills we can help sufferers move forward in their lives. In this hands-on, experiential workshop you will learn more about what makes trauma ‘complex’, why shutdown or dissociation are often experienced by sufferers, and how to best work with such presentations using the Human Givens framework of understanding. You will also have the chance to collaborate with other experienced practitioners and clinicians during exercises designed to further your understanding, add to your existing skillsets, and bring wider context to an often-misunderstood area of work. During this intensive day of live, in-person training, experienced psychotherapist Ros Townsend will introduce you to a framework within which you can set your understanding of complex trauma presentations and discover the opportunities that we have to help clients move forward from their difficulties. You will learn more about the neurobiology of the automatic survival options that we have available to us, especially dissociative and ‘shutdown’ states, and leave with an understanding of how to use this knowledge to inform your work, giving you greater confidence to work creatively and flexibly with such presentations. From understanding the symptoms that are now recognised as distinguishing C-PTSD, to adapting existing HG techniques and strategies and introducing new tools and skills, this course will explore how we, as clinicians, can approach such complex presentations without getting lost in the complexity ourselves. Using case histories and discussion you will have the chance to understand more about the unique challenges that such work presents and to leave feeling more confident in your ability as a therapist to work effectively and contextually with these. Such a thought-provoking and informative day. It will also help you find ways of calming yourself in moments of overwhelm to ensure that you can be as supportive and helpful as you’d like to be. Why you should attend With the ever changing, uncertain world we live in creating a vast amount of pressure on children – emotionally and physically – more children and teenagers are experiencing extremely stressful, distressing situations, with many looking for coping mechanisms to help them deal with their negative thoughts, feelings and emotions. Self harm (including self injury) is hugely on the increase and rates are higher than ever since Covid-19 and the long periods of isolation and uncertainty young people have experienced in ‘lock downs’. A survey of 61 secondary school children by charity Place2Be, shows self-harm reports increased by 77%, from 48 to 85, from August to September 2021. Finding the right words to approach self-harming can be difficult – this online webinar was created to help you (parents, carers, teachers) approach this topic with empathy and confidence. Discovering that a young person you are caring for is self harming can be an extremely stressful situation. When we are highly emotional, it can cause us to react in desperate ways, which are often not helpful or supportive to the young person, even if our intentions are totally well-meaning. “A really helpful, caring approach – it has clarified so much for me and I can now see a sensible way forward.”MARTIN, PARENT. This course is relevant to a range of self-harming behaviours including: self-injury cutting, ripping or carving skin burning skin punching or hitting themselves scratching or pinching (including dermatillomania) poisoning themselves with tablets or liquids (or similar) over-eating and under-eating (anorexia or bulimia) biting yourself (dermatophagia) inserting objects into your body overdosing, exercising excessively pulling your hair (trichotillomania) getting into fights where you know you will get hurt What you will learn What is self-harm? Why young people self-harm How common is self-harming How to approach the subject (building rapport, trust…) How to react if your child (or any young person) tells you they are self harming (what not to say and do) The distinction between self harm and a suicide attempt The addictive element to self harm How to help a young person break the addictive pattern Helping a child in the short- and long term The influence of social media and peers Keeping your child safe Looking after yourself (managing stress, anxiety and worry for the household) Finding professional help View booking details Who this training is suitable for Parents, other family members and/or carers of children and young people who are at risk of self harming or currently self harming.
