DATE: 26th March TIME: 4pm LOCATION:Studio A We are pleased to welcome Film Buddy back for an exclusive TELEVISION SCREENWRITING mentoring session, where we will feature two wonderful guest speakers and mentors: CALEB RANSON (Around the World in 80 Days, Midsomer Murders) and JAKE RIDDELL (Waterloo Road, Young Dracula, Grantchester, Death in Paradise). They will be discussing various aspects of TV Screenwriting, including what to include in your pilot and how best to pitch your series idea. Be sure to book on if you are interested and want to learn more about professional screenwriting.

DATE: 12th February TIME: 4pm LOCATION: Studio A The original Marriage Story, this 1970s classic tells the story of a couple's divorce, the impact it has on their son and their personal lives, and how they need to cope as parents, working with the person they've fallen out of love with. Featuring two towering performances from Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep, this courtroom drama has lost none of its power and nuance, and remains one of the best examinations of the breakdown of a relationship ever put to film. When it was released in 1979, it was one of the first time a film confronted issues such as work-life balance, father's rights and expected gender roles. Told with heart as well as humour, this film will stay with you for a long time after the credits roll.

Date: 22nd January Time: 4pm Location: Studio A One of the most highly-acclaimed films of the 2010s (and rightly so), Bong Joon-Ho's 2019 masterpiece Parasite explores the crushing forces of social hierarchy, the deceptive nature of hope and familial bonds in a story that crosses several different genres in a tight, twisty manner. The Kim family live in a deprived area of Seoul, and must work together through trickery and manipulation to convince the much wealthier Park family to hire them as servants. As lies and deceptions mount atop one another, the Kims make a startling discovery that will push their abilities and reveal the darker side hidden in all of them. Come see the first film to win the Palme d'Or and Best Picture Oscar in over 60 years, and join us to discuss afterwards what this film means to you!

Time: 4pm Date: 17th January Location: Studio A We're kicking off 2024 with a season of films by Greta Gerwig! First up, her heartfelt and nostalgia-laced debut, 2017's Lady Bird. Saoirse Ronan (in one of her best ever roles) stars as Christine 'Lady Bird' McPherson, an out-spoken teenager looking to establish her own identity away from Sacramento, where she's spent her whole life. At the same time she faces complex relationships with her mother, first love, best friend and home identity. We look forward to welcoming you all back to the CFS Film Club this year!

Do you know your directors from your DOPs? Who won more Oscars, De Niro or Day-Lewis? Join us on the day and find out what you know, and what you have space to learn. Kicking off at 5pm and featuring a variety of different categories, come try your hand at demonstrating your cinematic knowledge!

DATE: Monday 15th July TIME: 12:30pm LOCATION: Studio A We will be hosting a meeting to see how many students would be interested in a potential school trip to the Berlin International Film (Berlinale) festival next year, in Spring 2025. Organised by Mark de Valk and Conrad Pollock, this trip will offer you the chance to get to the heart of both the European Film Industry and one of the world's coolest, most vibrant cities. The Berlinale is one of the most prestigious film festivals active today, and you'll be exposed to new releases from around the world, make international connections and get to explore a European capital that's rich in history and culture. Currently we are looking at 5 days and 4 nights overall, with group travel and accommodation together. If you are interested, please join us for this meeting. This trip is open to all CFS students on all courses, and booking will likely take place in Autumn term. Please note, the trip's viability is subject to a minimum number of sign-ups (amount tbc).

You will come away with knowledge of philanthropy, funding and development in theatre, associated roles and career paths as well as a range of skills to apply to your own creative journeys, projects and funding endeavours. Some topics covered will include: Why the arts need philanthropy Who becomes a fundraiser, and where it can take you? Who funds theatre and theatres? Join us for a special 61st anniversary screening of JFK (1991) by Oliver Stone Step back into one of the most tumultuous moments in American history with a powerful screening of the theatrical version of Oliver Stone’s gripping and controversial thriller that explores the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Through dramatic storytelling and a deep dive into the era’s conspiracy theories, the film raises provocative questions that still stir debate today. Event Highlights Historical context: CFS welcomes Dr Mark de Valk, Course Leader of Practical Filmmaking at Central Film School, who will first deliver a pre-screening overview on Oliver Stone’s 1991 film JFK. Film screening: A special 61st anniversary screening of the theatrical version of JFK (1991) by Oliver Stone. There will also be a demonstration of a Bell & Howell 8mm film camera that captured the event on 22/11/63.
