Regulation 10 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 sets down requirements for asbestos awareness training. Basically, any employer involved in work where there might be a risk of disturbing asbestos, such as general building, maintenance, demolition, or refurbishment, is required by law to ensure that all affected employees are educated and trained appropriately. More recently the importance of adherence to the awareness measures has been emphasised in the Health & Safety Executive’s ‘Duty to Manage Asbestos Enforcement Initiative’ and it is now clear that non-compliance will not be tolerated. In fact, several perpetrators have already been served with improvement notices, or in the worst-case scenario a probation notice, which results in an immediate and costly halt to work. Employee training is believed to be the best way to target the estimated 1.8 million workers who are potentially at risk of life-threatening illnesses following exposure to asbestos in their day-to-day work. These people include plasterers, roofers, plumbers, electricians, demolition, maintenance men and joiners but also the less obvious workers such as computer installers, ground workers, landscapers, and fire & burglar alarm installers. Aims To raise personnel awareness of asbestos and the risks associated with it. To comply with the legal requirement of The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012. Prerequisites None – The course is intended either as an introduction or as an update. Assessment Delegates will be required to complete a short multiple-choice test at the end of the training. This qualification is aimed at those who are involved in Plastering activities in the workplace. It is not expected that candidates working in this industry all do the same activities so the qualification has been developed to allow opportunities for those carrying out work in either solid or fibrous Plastering. Those taking the qualification must also prove knowledge and competence in working at heights, calculating quantities and wastage and the use of powered and hand tools and equipment. All work completed must be done in accordance with Building Regulations and Industry recognised safe working practices, including the disposal of waste. The qualification is structured to ensure that there is a high degree of flexibility within the units available and will allow employees from companies of all sizes and specialisms equal opportunity to complete. In addition to this qualification there is a Level 2 qualification in Plastering and a number of other Construction and Construction related qualifications available through Oscar Onsite Academy. What is required from candidates? GQA qualifications are made up of a number of units that have a credit value or credits. This qualification consists of 4 mandatory units and 2 pathways, Solid and Fibrous. The qualification mandatory units have a total credit value of 31 credits-in addition the Solid plastering pathway requires achievement of 54 credits from the pathway mandatory units and a minimum of 14 credits required from the pathway optional group, giving a total of 99 credits. The fibrous plastering pathway requires achievement of all of the qualification mandatory units (31 credits) 45 credits from the pathway mandatory units and a minimum of 16 credits required from the pathway optional group a total of 92 credits for this pathway. The units are made up of the things those working in these job roles need to know to be able to do to carry out the work safely and correctly. These are called Learning Outcomes, and all must be met to achieve the unit. Types of evidence: Evidence of performance and knowledge is required. Evidence of performance should be demonstrated by activities and outcomes, and should be generated in the workplace only, unless indicated under potential sources of evidence (see below). Evidence of knowledge can be demonstrated though performance or by responding to questions. Quantity of evidence: Evidence should show that you can meet the requirements of the units in a way that demonstrates that the standards can be achieved consistently over an appropriate period of time. This would normally include, but is not limited to, trade operatives such as demolition workers, construction workers, general maintenance staff, electricians, plumbers, gas fitters, painters and decorators, joiners, shop fitters, plasterers, roofers, heating and ventilation engineers, telecommunication engineers, computer installers, fire and burglar alarm installers, architects, building surveyors and other such professionals or any other persons likely to disturb and carry out work on asbestos containing materials as defined in CAR 2012.

Course Details Any persons carrying out non-licensed works with asbestos containing materials, as laid down in CAR 2012, Reg 3(2). This would normally include, but is not limited to, trade operatives such as demolition workers, construction workers, general maintenance staff, electricians, plumbers, gas fitters, painters and decorators, joiners, shop fitters, plasterers, roofers, heating and ventilation engineers, telecommunication engineers, computer installers, fire and burglar alarm installers, architects, building surveyors and other such professionals or any other persons likely to disturb and carry out work on asbestos containing materials as defined in CAR 2012.

This course provides the delegate with the theoretical and practical skills to undertake non-licensed works with ACM's. Persons requiring this type of training would include trade operatives undertaking tasks with ACM's as defined in HSG210 and in accordance with CAR 2012 Reg 3(2). In addition to the Asbestos Awareness, those employees whose work will knowingly disturb ACMs, and which is defined as non-licensable work or NNLW, should receive additional task-specific information, instruction and training.
