Sholfins Swim School

sholfins swim school

Bromsgrove

Sholfins Swim School CIC is a not-for-profit company born from a passion and love for swimming. We are extremely passionate about our community. Our aim is to try and remove as many barriers as possible, preventing our community of Redditch from learning to swim. The team at Sholfins recognise that due to the pandemic there has been a huge impact on children having access to water in their early years. A number of primary/middle schools have also been unable to provide this life skill to their pupils prior to the pandemic for several different reasons, therefore, falling short of the national curriculum requirements, through no fault of their own. Swimming and water safety has been a statutory element of the national curriculum for physical education in England since 1994. This means that every 11-year-old child should leave primary/middle school with the skills to keep themselves safe. Swimming lessons provide all children with vital skills to help with survival and this is no different for children with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND). By 2025, over 780,000 children with SEND will be in the education system. However, inequalities in the ability of schools and teachers to offer high quality opportunities for them to participate in PE, School Sport or Physical Activity still exist, with disabled young people twice as likely to be physically inactive as non-disabled people. The focus on the new revised Ofsted inspection framework is also an area of consideration for schools to bare in mind. At Sholfins we believe everyone should have the opportunity to learn to swim. All of our instructors are Level 2, Swim England qualified and have RLSS Lifeguard, First Aid and Safeguarding Qualifications. The team are passionate about teaching and ensure that each child is given the support and encouragement to become water confident no matter what age. We are registered with Swim England and follow the learn to swim programme and the School Swimming and Water Safety charter.

Project Hoop

project hoop

We bring hoop to your events and parties, whether it be a hen party, or a black tie event. RoRo is a performer and a qualified teacher who has over 10 years teaching practise and a whole load of hoop experience. Originally self-taught, she now teaches at schools, circus schools, and conventions, as well as running weekly classes, and workshops. We travel often and have teachers all over the UK so no gig, workshop or class is too big or too small. We have esteemed performers nationwide who can provide entertainment and workshops for large-scale events with specialisms in hula hoop, fire, LED and aerial. Our School of Circus sessions provide workshop packages and sessions with an attention on being different from the norm, we have circus, dance, and a whole lot more. You can find more information under schools & colleges. Many young people do not experience any aspect of circus as prop for performance or as a physical activity and it is our intention to address this whilst offering something different to the conventional norm. As a performer we show case single and multi hoop tricks, blending circus, dance, and a whole load of pizazz. These can be done according to theme, with other performers (hoop or other), or with LED. Party packages (popular for hen & birthday parties) give you the opportunity to learn and see some impressive stuff, where guests can be entertained, whilst learning and having fun. If you are looking for a new hobby, or are wanting to get serious in the world of hoop, you have come to the right place. It’s fitness, it’s circus, it’s dance, and so much more. Moreover, it is something you can practice pretty much anywhere. All you need is a hoop, a sprinkle of determination, and some space. All classes and workshops are taught by trained professionals, in a supportive and structured environment. We can teach online or in person. Our takeaway classes (filmed during teaching in Covid-19) are available for you to purchase, download, and keep. A great teaching tool for aspiring hoop teachers, as well as those who want to learn all the tricks, or improve. Available in our shop under digital content.

Reading

Fundamental Fitness and Athletic development centres are based in and around the Reading area. Our aim is to get children involved and enjoying participating in physical activity through fitness and athletics regardless of their ability or background, boosting their sporting standards, confidence and setting the building blocks for a healthy life. "After doing well in a primary inter school sports day, my then teacher recommended I joined an athletics club. At the age of 9 I started with Reading athletics club and have never looked back. I started in the multi events group and quickly moved over to the throwing disciplines after breaking one of the long-standing club records for Javelin- a distance that ranked me 24th in the UK. Whilst continuing with other events for fun, I later specialised in Discus throwing and went on to compete for my club, county and region at various national events, spending several seasons inside of the top 20 in the UK for my age group, and gaining gold medals at county championships, South of England championships and National League finals along the way. It was during the 2012 season, after captaining the Reading squad and winning the National league final with them that I decided I wanted to coach and team manage for the younger age groups. Fundamental Fitness & Athletics Charlotte Webb 6 Years later and my passion is to see children getting enjoyment and success from their sporting careers. I am a qualified Level 2 UKA athletics coach, coaching Reading AC U11, U13 and throwing squads. I am also team manager for the boy’s national premier league team and over the 6 seasons have qualified for 4 national finals. We are currently UK champions for u13 and u15 age groups. To enhance my athletics coaching ability I have also studied level 3 personal training and nutrition which helps me to develop all the key areas of conditioning for the athletes. In 2018 we have qualified for national finals, raced at the Muller games Diamond league events, and seen numerous athletes improve on the personal best performances. I have since been recognised as the winner of the ‘Young volunteer of the year' award by England athletics for the South East region and finished inside the top 3 in the country. Begin2sports Group Academy

begin2sports group academy

Wandsworth

Begin2Sports was founded by sports coaching scientist and Commonwealth athlete Addy Mumunie. Born in Nigeria, sports came into her life through the necessity of running to school and back every day. However, it grew into her first love, achieving a regional level by the age of 12-13 and going on to represent Nigeria at Commonwealth/National level. Raising her family in Southwest London, sport and particularly athletics, were the bedrock of her life, raising her three daughters to also include sports into their life. One enjoys recreational sports, and the other two daughters compete as professional athletes at National and International level for England and GB. Coach Addy trained in Sport Coaching Science at St Mary’s University Twickenham. She went on to set up this community interest group (Begin2Sports) in 2017, with the goal to support people from disadvantaged backgrounds through sport and the 7 fundamental key principles of athletics. Coach Addy’s motivation for this project, came from her own humble beginnings. Challenged by Dyslexia, a misunderstood condition in the 1970’s, studying was very difficult. It was an unsupported experience and consequently personal progress was severely inhibited. It was then that she realised that taking part in sports, offered her the freedom, confidence, self-esteem, and self-expression that she needed to help overcome these challenges. Inspiring others to discover the benefits of sport in their lives was the spark that inspired Begin2Sports. At the heart of the group’s purpose is increasing sports participation in the community. We aim to provide individuals at a higher risk of sports deprivation in the London borough of Wandsworth, access to low-cost physical activity & fitness services. Uniquely, we also offer a blended physical and cognitive programme, known as Dysletics and GymLetics, designed specifically for those living with Dyslexia and Dyspraxia. WHO WE ARE We are a community focused organisation, that provide sports-based coaching built on values of OPENNESS, EMPOWERMENT, AND NUTURING. Gwma

gwma

Leicester

GWMA is a mixed martial arts system which is based in Mountsorrel Leicestershire. As a mixed martial art, GWMA’s main influences are Shotokan/Goshin Ryu karate with elements of Kung Fu. Gavin Walker is the chief instructor with 34 years’ experience in martial arts and has been running his classes for 10 years. We believe that learning martial arts should be an enjoyable experience and can benefit anyone in the following ways: 1. Self-Discipline – One of the central tenets of martial arts is a focus on self-discipline. Today’s kids are so accustomed to receiving instant gratification that lessons in self-restraint and discipline aren’t always easy to come by. Kids with a martial arts background, however, are continually reminded of how essential self-discipline is. 2. Boosting Socialization Skills – People who don’t always thrive in highly social environments may find it easier to get to know people and make new friends when they’re in a room filled with peers who share a common interest. The kids on the playground may not always have much common ground, but devotees to the martial arts are able to get to know one another through shared pursuits. 3. Encouraging Physical Activity – In todays technology based environment where most things are at a touch of a button, enrolling into a physical enjoyable activity can inspires yourself to keep moving and become fitter as a consequence. 4. Learning to Set and Achieve Goals – Most forms of martial arts are based around an accomplishment system of coloured belts that signify the wearer’s degree of skill. When your child or as an adult strives toward each new belt, they are learning valuable lessons about setting and reaching goals. 5. Increased Self-Esteem – Confidence comes with achievement, so your self-esteem level will get a boost with every new move mastered and every belt earned. People who struggle with a low sense of self-worth usually become more confident as time progresses while they’re enrolled in a martial arts class. 6. Instilling a Sense of Respect – Learning any martial arts style will require you to show your instructor respect. Today’s culture doesn’t always include respect for authority. When you go to a Martial Arts class, you will be learning lessons in respect along with new moves. 7. Developing Teamwork Skills – Working together to learn new things and accomplish goals is an important life lesson to be learnt, and instruction in the martial arts can help you learn that lesson. 8. Improvement in Other Areas of Life – The benefits of martial arts training don’t end in the dojo. The boost in confidence, increased fitness levels and new cooperation skills will help you in other areas of life. The classes are open to all abilities and anyone over the age of 4yrs old can take part.

Yasmin Zaman - The Portable Guru

yasmin zaman - the portable guru

For 20 years I’ve dedicated my life to inspiring others by teaching the self-awareness and self-care practices of connecting to the body and mind through various styles of yoga, mindfulness meditation, physical activity & trauma sensitive approaches to healing and recovery. My own life, and decades of working with diverse groups of people all over the world, taught me that when we take good care of ourselves, we value and appreciate others, and forge a better connection with the natural world on which we depend. My Bio includes more on my background, training, research papers and publications About four decades ago, yoga originally began as a way to care for my sore bones and tender tissues traumatized by a childhood fall, taught by a specialist teacher, practising what was then known as remedial yoga, today commonly referred to as yoga therapy. I know, without a doubt, that yoga and mindfulness meditation can heal the body, centre and focus the mind and restore sagging spirits. But being human and subject to the pressures of life, I didn’t always listen! Insecurity had me chasing a career: from teaching to working my way to senior roles alongside the great and the good in global Public Relations and communications for various not-for-profits and humanitarian organisations. The stress levels were stratospheric though it provided a dubious kind of glamour! Then one day I was diagnosed with a TIA (a stroke). And I listened. You don’t have to go through the same! Today, my work is varied: working therapeutically with patients referred for psychiatric care in a team of psychiatrists, psychotherapists and others; to teaching mindfulness-based and yoga classes & courses to the public who come in all shapes, colours and sizes. I am also interested in healing traditions from other cultures as a pathway to wholeness, e.g., shamanism. It’s been my privilege to lead programmes in partnership with local government agencies, GPs, academics, schools and corporate organisations to support everyone from children, young adults, working people, stressed, anxious and clinically depressed people, & those suffering with trauma diagnoses to learn ways to restore their wellbeing with skills and knowledge with an evidence base in science, mindfulness and yoga-based traditions. I have enhanced DBS and teach either group or one-to-one sessions online or in person: Weekly group yoga and mindfulness-based meditation classes (online & in person) One-to-one sessions and courses (online & in person) Yoga and mindfulness courses & workshops for all levels (dates to be confirmed) A blog and social media posts to inspire and provide resources to oil the wheels of your week (irregular!) A few retreats a year where you can immerse yourself in learning body wisdom and mind craft among kind, friendly and welcoming groups of like-souled people. In my free time I enjoy travel or watching travel documentaries, learning languages, walks with Mother Nature, the gym (not really but I do resistance exercise), music, art and dancing – Argentine tango and historical dances from the Baroque and Regency periods with the Winchester Baroque Dancers and Duke of Wellington’s Dancers. I am a Jane Austen superfan or Janeite and appear in a BBC documentary commemorating 200 years of her death in 2017! I have twin nephews and a niece, who all started practising yoga while very young. I’m hoping to add a rescue pug to the family very soon.
