Wiltshire Equine Assisted Learning offers one to one social, emotional and mental health support through equine and animal assisted outdoor learning. creates positive opportunities for young people to thrive in the outdoors in a safe and supportive space, to reset the trajectory of life’s path. allows young people, through nurturing animals, to develop their empathy and find a sense of calm. gives learners real farming responsibilities, promoting satisfaction and pride. Being herd animals, horses seek connection and trust, and they mirror our behaviour. In working with them, learners are able to develop perspective of their own behaviour and begin to regulate their energy. All work with horses is from the ground (not ridden) and so no previous equine experience is necessary. Through interactions with animals, and the outdoor world in which they live, learners enjoy the freedom of nature, gain confidence, resilience, self-esteem and self-awareness by working on outdoor activities and a bespoke animal assisted learning program. Within our farm environment we are able to create holistic opportunities for learners to stretch their expectations and reach their full potential in a safe and supported way. Learners develop an understanding of themselves, their emotions, the perspective of others and in turn improve their focus, communication skills and their wellbeing. Preparation for adulthood Employment skills - we deliver tutoring, to include time keeping, record keeping, appropriate behaviour, health and safety, modelling good practice, team and independent work, and knowledge of job-based skills. Independent living - learners develop an abundance of practical skills, as well as communication, organisation, day to day maths, and budgeting. Engaging with the community - in working with horses, learners improve their social communication skills, their respect of self, empathy for others, body language, nurturing relationships, care and kindness. Health - learners work in the outdoors where we promote the benefit of fresh air and healthy living, activity and exercise, lifestyle choices, resilience, mindfulness and positive mental health skills. Managing transitions Learners are invited for a site visit with their support worker, parents or carers to assess the suitability of our sessions as their alternative provision. Transitions are than managed through a referral form to establish each individual learner’s needs and the tailoring of sessions appropriate to the targets of their education, health and care plans (EHCPs). Following an initial induction session we work to establish a trusting relationship in the first term, allowing the learner time to settle and familiarise, and for the facilitator to assess and develop a picture of their learner-led programme moving forward. We invite future provisions to join sessions to initiate a trusting relationship and understanding of our learner when preparing to move on or integrate into mainstream education. A portfolio of skills and CV of attainment will move with the learner, to be passed on to their next further education or provision.

The Horse Institute is the vision of Marie-Claude Stockl and Larry Stockl, two seasoned corporate executives who grew frustrated with spending valuable training budgets on the same old courses year after year. The courses, seminars, lectures and conferences at the Leadership Training Centre are designed and facilitated to support the formation and development of Christian leaders in their various practice of ministry. The Certificate in Ministerial Studies(CIMS) courses are open to Pastors and Church leaders from all Christian denominations. CIMS courses provide learning opportunities for effective Christian service within and beyond the local church. We continue to work in partnership with a selected number of theological institutions and organisations such as The Queen’s Foundation for Ecumenical Theological Education, the Pentecostal Theological Seminary (PTS) and the Association of Christian Counsellors’ (ACC)). Partnership with PTS enables us to facilitate a Certificate Programme for Church Leaders and a UK MDiv cohort which should appeal to those who wish to advance their theological studies particularly in our Pentecostal tradition. The CIMS course, Helping People in Crises, for example, has been extended to incorporate the ACC acclaimed ‘Pastoral Care Foundation Course’ and provide an opportunity for those with a heart for pastoral care to sharpen their perspective and skills to become more effective in the care of people in their churches and local communities. We welcome every Pastor and key leader within the New Testament Church of God and other denominations to take advantage of our provision to enrich your personal and ministerial development and enhance your practice of ministry.

Russell MacKechnie-Guire holds a PhD in Equine Biomechanics, graduating from the Royal Veterinary College in 2019. Russell’s thesis was titled ‘The Relationship between Saddle and Rider Kinematics, Equine Locomotion, and Thoracolumbar Pressures in Sports Horses’. Russell is based at Centaur Biomechanics, a company which he founded in 2006. He has extensively researched the effect that tack (saddle, bridle and girth) and the rider has on equine health and performance. Russell holds a post at Hartpury University as a Reader in Equine Biomechanics. Russell’s current area of research is horse-saddle-rider interaction, spinal kinematics in horses when ridden over ground, the effect that rider asymmetry has on equine back movement, and from a rehabilitation perspective, the effect that training aids and pole work exercise has on back movement. In addition, Russell collaborates with researchers on various research projects associated with equine health, rehabilitation and performance. Russell is a consultant for the British Equestrian Federations World Class, Team GBR programme and is a member of Team GBR’s Scientific Advisory Group. Russell also sits on the Society of Master Saddlers Scientific Advisory Group, and is part of the executive committee for the International Task force on Laterality in Sports Horses. Russell is also a Pilates instructor, Intrinsic (Human) Biomechanics Trainer, a BHSI equestrian coach, and a keen competitor in dressage and show jumping.

Great and necessary course for anyone working with young people. Cheryl is an excellent instructor. Thank you! Excellent use of personal stories to help use as examples to explain the different types of mental health. Cheryl was patient and supportive with technical glitches. Useful having her phone number to text. Cheryl was knowledgeable and gave us confidence in our approach to a young person in crisis in the way we can try to help and support them. The course was informative, and I found the individual learning actives and tasks accompanied with the teaching worked extremely well. The videos provided were engaging and remained focussed on the topic. I particularly felt Cheryl dealt with some of the topics that were difficult, with a high level of sensitivity and care. There was briefing prior to some of the topics. I would have possibly liked a debrief however I believed the course was excellent and I feel it will be so important for my organisation in supporting with our service users. It has now prompted me to continue further learning around mental health and building on what I have learnt from the course. Thanks to Cheryl again for her delivery of the course and demonstrating her passion.
