AS A CHILD I WAS A BIG FAN OF MARTIAL ARTS MOVIES, ANYTHING STARRING BRUCE LEE IN PARTICULAR. WHEN MY PARENTS FINALLY HAD ENOUGH OF MY BROTHER AND I REENACTING SCENES AROUND THE HOUSE THEY SENT US TO KARATE LESSONS. MY MOTHER WAS A VERY SUCCESSFUL PRACTITIONER HERSELF. I STUDIED KARATE FOR ABOUT 10 YEARS, ON AND OFF, AND FELT CONFIDENT IN MY ABILITY TO DEFEND MYSELF, DESPITE NEVER HAVING PRESSURE- TESTED MY TRAINING IN THE REAL WORLD. I WAS BULLIED AT SCHOOL BUT TREATED IT AS A POINT OF PRIDE NOT TO RETALIATE. BESIDES, MY HANDS WERE REGISTERED AS LETHAL WEAPONS,SO IT WOULD BE UNFAIR AND IRRESPONSIBLE TO TURN THAT HUGE ADVANTAGE AGAINST AN UNWITTING ASSAILANT, RIGHT? AT 16 YEARS OLD I HAD MY RUDE AWAKENING. I WAS BADLY BEATEN UP BY THE JEALOUS, OLDER EX- BOYFRIEND OF MY THEN GIRLFRIEND. THE ONLY THING MY 10 YEARS OF TRADITIONAL TRAINING HAD ARMED ME WITH WAS THE MISGUIDED CONFIDENCE THAT SIMPLY PROLONGED THE BEATING. IT WAS CLEAR THAT THE SKILLS I HAD DEVELOPED IN THE DOJO WERE NOT TRANSFERABLE TO SELF- DEFENCE. A FRIEND OF MY DAD'S WAS A HIGH- LEVEL THAI BOXER, AND AFTER TELLING HIM ABOUT MY IDENTITY CRISIS HE INVITED ME TO HIS GYM. I COULDN'T BELIEVE MY EYES. PEOPLE WERE PUNCHING AND KICKING EACH OTHER. HARD. THERE WERE NO RITUALISTIC FORMS OR 'KATAS'. YOU PRACTISED A FEW SKILLS AND THEN YOU PUT ON YOUR GLOVES, PUT IN YOUR GUM SHIELD AND TRIED TO MAKE THOSE SKILLS WORK UNDER INTENSE PRESSURE. Lewis Kemp-Sloan, Owner I WAS WAY OUT OF MY DEPTH AND I LOVED IT. I KNEW THAT I WOULD BE FAR BETTER PHYSICALLY AND PSYCHOLOGICALLY PREPARED FOR CONFLICT IN THE FUTURE BECAUSE WE WERE IMMERSING OURSELVES IN IT EVERY TIME WE STEPPED INTO THE GYM. FROM THERE I WAS INTRODUCED TO THE GRAPPLING ARTS, SUCH AS BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU, JUDO AND WRESTLING. I LOVED THE 'HUMAN CHESS' ASPECT OF IT; THE WAY YOU CAN DRAW YOUR OPPONENT INTO A TRAP AND THEN USE TECHNIQUE AND LEVERAGE TO THROW OR SUBMIT THEM. THE NATURAL PROGRESSION FROM THERE WAS MIXED MARTIAL ARTS (MMA), IN WHICH THE STRIKING AND GRAPPLING ARTS ARE COMBINED TO GIVE THE CLOSEST THING TO NO- HOLDS- BARRED, REAL WORD HAND-TO-HAND COMBAT IN THE SPORTING WORLD. THE MOST EXCITING THING ABOUT THIS SPORT FROM MY PERSPECTIVE WAS THE WAY IN WHICH PRACTITIONERS DEVELOP THEIR OWN STYLES, WHICH WAS FAR MORE PRAGMATIC THAN THE APPROACH I WAS USED TO IN TRADITIONAL MARTIAL ARTS. DURING A SUCCESSFUL COMPETITIVE CAREER IN MMA I WAS APPROACHED WITH THE OPPORTUNITY OF TEACHING CLOSE QUARTERS COMBAT TO LAW ENFORCEMENT OVERSEAS. IT WAS A DREAM COME TRUE. I WAS TASKED WITH DEVELOPING A PROGRAMME THAT WAS FUNCTIONAL AND EFFECTIVE. I MANAGED THAT PROJECT FOR ALMOST 10 YEARS, DURING WHICH TIME THE EMPHASIS ALWAYS CENTRED ON OUR CORE TENETS; PRACTICALITY AND EFFECTIVENESS.

Elizabeth M Pritchard I love 121 coaching. I also train and certify aspiring NLP practitioners looking to invest time and money in a high-quality certification that nurtures both their personal and professional development. Fascinated by the inner workings of human beings, as teenagers, my friend Julie and I would escape games lessons at Bath Convent to read poetry - hidden behind the coats in the cloakroom. We’d sit and contemplate what the great poets were trying to convey for hours at a time. We’d stay up all night sometimes, talking at length about how life worked. I took this inquisitive appetite for knowledge to university where I became enamoured with the confessional nature of the American poets who seemed capable of expressing the internal experience with infinite precision. In discovering the perspective-shifting teachings of Neuro-Linguistic Programming in the mid-80s, I came to understand how important it is to invest in your future and dedicate time and energy to your development. And so, that’s what I set out to do - not only for myself but to help others achieve this too. I have now lived and breathed NLP principles for over three decades, having undertaken 6250 formal training hours and followed programmes with the founders and global leaders in the field. Today, we probably deliver the most thorough and up-to-date NLP Practitioner Training in the world. If you’re ready to lead a life that you love, I’d love to talk to you. Hire me as a coach, or for 5-day personal strategy intensives, 1-1 NLP training sessions, 20-day NLP certification programmes and 1-day NLP training days. Katy Schutte

As an artist I work with shared truth and autobiography to create theatre and improvised theatre with a sense of nostalgia that asks how perspective has changed us. I deep dive into genres like storytelling, science fiction and folk horror to create a mood and a washing line of tropes to build my original work around. I either make transient work through long form improvisation or write a script and edit through collaboration and audience reactions. There is always an element of audience involvement - small or large - that changes the piece each time. My artwork retells my personal history, my passions and my fears in a way that allows others to unlock theirs." Katy Schutte is one of the UK's original long form improvisers. She performs and teaches all over the world, is Head Teacher and Course Designer for Hoopla (the UK's largest improv school), was Co-Founder/Director at the International Improv Station and has been one of The Maydays since their founding year in 2004 with stints as Director and Artistic Director. She is half of legendary sci-fi improv duo Project2 and author of The Improviser's Way: A Longform Workbook, which is published by Nick Hern Books. Katy trained at Second City and iO Chicago and with teachers from the Annoyance, UCB, Groundlings, The Magnet and lots of other places. Katy also plays in slow burn longform show Katy and Rach, has toured with Fluxx, improvised musicals with Music Box, The Maydays and Baby Wants Candy, co-created the Destination podcast and has guested in countless shows including Messing with a Friend, Criminal, The Playground, the London and Liverpool Improvathons, Grand Theft Impro, Séance Fiction, Whirled News Tonight and The Armando Diaz Experience. Along with Chris Mead and Tony Harris, she was in the first ever improv show in Virtual Reality and continues to work on the bleeding edge of technology in The Galaxicle Implosions. She has performed in Hoopla's Saturday night shows Tightrope and Speechless, the West End show Yes Queens and toured festivals with WrongCom. Katy is thrilled to be a team member of London queer improv group Hell Yeah! and hip hop improv team Track 96.
