MAKE Southwest (formerly Devon Guild of Craftsmen) is an acclaimed exhibition space for contemporary craft and design as well as a leading charity for craft education. Located in Bovey Tracey on the edge of Dartmoor, our large galleries offer a great venue with inspiring exhibitions and events, encouraging people to support, make and learn about contemporary craft. MAKE Southwest was founded as Devon Guild of Craftsmen in 1955 by a small group of makers, led by Edward Baly, who were enthusiastic about the idea of promoting the best in regional craftwork. From 1956, and for the next 30 years, annual exhibitions at venues throughout South Devon were well received. In 1986 the organisation took the massive step of purchasing Riverside Mill. The building now houses a retail gallery and 3 exhibition galleries, which stage over 20 exhibitions throughout the year! In November 2021 the organisation changed its name to MAKE Southwest to more accurately represent their offering. MAKE Southwest is a registered charity with educational aims, and profits from its trading ventures help to subsidise this work, which includes the exhibition programme, projects in schools and community groups, lectures and training. Apart from a handful of items, the MAKE Southwest retail gallery sells only the work of its Members, while the exhibitions aim to show a broad range of the best craft from around the country.

I was a late comer to Floristry (my background is in Marketing) but the creative and organisational skills gained during my years of marketing are so valuable when it comes to planning flowers for an event. I re-trained in floristry while living in Australia, and in 2021 The Harbour Florist (named after Sydney Harbour) was born. I now work from a home studio near Newbury, Berkshire. I focus on weddings and events plus the occasional workshop, and my aim is always to create beautiful, relaxed, designs tailored specifically to you. I like to keep designs looking as close to nature as possible, using flowers in their natural form and colour, locally grown when available and combining with lush green foliage for added texture and contrast.

Life and experience taught me that it is never too late to take a leap of faith, change direction, retrain and really start enjoying what you do for a living. After starting full time work at the tender age of 16 and after many years of working in finance, support roles and for large organisations, although this provided me with an excellent foundation in customer services and organisational skills, I decided to eventually take the brave step of retraining whilst on maternity leave, to become a self-employed Lash Artist and Educator and I’ve never looked back. Juggling college life as a mature student whilst raising two small children wasn’t easy to begin with, but with support and patience it has given me the freedom to run my own diary, choose my working patterns and still be there for my family and children. There have been amazing times, some tears and frustrations, but it has given me a sense of achievement and determination to inspire others on their career path, be that part time, as a side-line or full-time career choice. Students come to me from all ages and varied career paths, often with little or no experience and I welcome every single one with enthusiasm, a passion to inspire, encourage and support them on their journey from complete beginner to expert lash and brow artist.
