Cultures CIC was formed by Sade Sangowawa and commenced trading as a Community Interest Company (CIC) In 2007. Based in Stockton-On-Tees, Cultures CIC works with individuals and groups from BME, migrant and Refugee communities to improve social, economic and cultural inclusion and build social cohesion. The company is involved in a number of long and short term community projects across the following themes: Improve employability; Promote equality; Break down barriers; Improve access to services and; Delivering cultural awareness raising seminars and conferences. Since 2007 Cultures has become a valued community resource and has established its credibility as a public service provider for out-sourced service provision. We have also been very successful in delivering a number of other projects for job Centre Plus, Learning & Skills Council and Stockton Borough Council via the Five Lamps Organisation and The Taste of Africa event, which is now considered a regional event with an increasing audience, attracting people from as far as London. We understand the difficulties faced by migrants when they migrate to another country and through our services we aim to help them understand the new culture and way of living, the public service structure and their rights and responsibilites. Our strategic aim is to ‘Advance the economic, social and cultural integration of disadvantaged BAME, Refugee and migrant Communities’. The organisation was set up in 2000 as an independent charity to run a community facility. Since then it has gone from strength to strength by expanding the space available for activities and delivering its own services such as childcare, adult learning health and well-being projects. Outline below is our story: 1999 - In 1999, with the closure and demolition of the Foundry Street youth club, a meeting was held by representatives of local Ravensthorpe based community groups about the possibility of acquiring a building for general community use. After many meetings and discussions between them and Kirklees Council, it was agreed that if representatives could come together to form a group, Kirklees Council would support them in acquiring and running a community building through available European SRB Grant funding. With St Johns Ambulance Centre looking for new premises their building came up for sale, it was purchased by the newly formed group in 1999 and renamed as the Ravensthorpe Community Centre. 2000 - The building underwent a series of alterations to make it more suitable for use as a community centre, the building had disabled ramps put in and the rooms were changed to make then suitable for community use. In May 2000 the building was officially opened by Mayor of Kirkless. The building subsequently became very popular with regular users such as a wide range of community groups, the local further education college holding learning classes and a local provider delivering crèche facilities.

National Taekwondo Club (NTC) was established more than five decades ago by Master Hetherington, making it officially the UK’s longest-serving Taekwondo Club. In addition to Derby, we have three branches in Nottingham (Nottingham Central, Arnold and OMAC-UK in Gedling), Coventry, Liverpool, London, and Rotherham. National Taekwondo Club – Derby (NTC Derby) is a non for profit organisation whose objectives are: Taekwondo Promotion The advancement of the sport by promoting the game of Taekwondo for the benefits of the residents of Derby and its environs. Life Improvement The provision of facilities for the learning, teaching, and playing of Taekwondo for the benefits of the residents of Derby and its environs with object of improving the condition of life. Many Taekwondo instructors will tell you that Taekwondo is an Olympic sport, which is true, but not all will tell you that we are the only Taekwondo Club in the city of Derby that practices Olympic Taekwondo as developed and practiced in South Korea and the only group that is a full member of the official national governing body for Olympic Taekwondo, and that is British Taekwondo which’s functions include responsibility for the selection of National Teams to compete at International and Olympic level. We have trained British and European champions. We have also had a number of students selected to train with and represent Great Britain. We also have dedicated children’s classes throughout the week at school venues across the UK.

The next Show was held on 4th September 1948 in Busby Primary School, establishing the tradition of holding the Annual Flower Show on the first Saturday in September. Membership was around 250, not dissimilar to what we have today The Society continued to meet alternatively in Busby East & West Church Halls. Whist drives, bulb shows, summer outings and dances were very popular, taking their place in the programme alongside the Annual Flower Show and the winter lectures It proved to be a very successful organisation and flourished over the succeeding years. A move was made to Clarkston in 1962 with the name Clarkston added and Clarkston Halls used as a base During its life, the Society has progressed and is now an established entity in the community, supported by local residents and businesses. Links have been forged with like-minded local and national groups through the Scottish Gardeners Forum The Committee numbers fifteen and we are always looking to encourage younger members to get involved A booklet commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the Society has been published incorporating local historian, John McVicar’s exciting insight into the foundations of the current Society. You will be as amazed as we were to read that The Busby Horticultural Society was founded in 1881 and mounted its first show in Wilson’s Hall at the end of August 1882 1947-2007 The First Sixty Years is available from the Society.

Swindon

Inner Flame is a local Swindon-based Charity running programmes for young people who find themselves at a disadvantage in Swindon and Wiltshire. The organisation was founded by David Wreathall in 2008. The passion is to give young people the tools and mindset to thrive in their future lives. Our programmes are based around experiential learning; challenging the young people and inspiring them to grab life and run with it. We are probably best known for the Prince’s Trust Team Programme, which is a 12-week full time employability and self-development programme. It’s an incredible programme and can genuinely be life-changing. We have also developed our own Mental Health Programme: Manage Anxiety Your Way. We created this in response to the increased need (even before the Pandemic) for mental health support for young people. This programme is proving to meet a need and the feedback about the impact on young people is powerful. Around these programmes we run shorter programmes to create a full progression route for young people. Success is measured by hard outcomes, such as young people progressing to the workplace, but also by soft outcomes; such as increased resilience, motivation and development of goals and aspirations. At Inner Flame we always start with the individual. Many young people who come through our doors have low self esteem and feel their lives have little value. We show them that they can achieve and help them start their journey.
