In this one-day introduction to grain setting techniques, you will learn how to set small stones in a selection of styles. We will begin with a simple single stone grain setting before moving onto a traditional star setting and finally a row of five stones in a thread and grain style setting. During the day we will also look at considerations for grain setting as well as the preparation of tools and possible applications. Some stones might not be suitable due to size or shape, so please be aware if you do bring along your own stones, it might not be suitable for the setting technique but we will advise you on the day. Stones shouldn’t be smaller than 8-10mm for those new to setting as they can be hard to work with and is it harder to see the processes involved in setting. This class is about getting to grips with Tube Setting. You will have to option to create a pendant or ring – maybe even two pieces if time allows. Krista will guide you through the process of tube setting where you will be using the Foredom Pendant Motor to cut a seat for your facetted brilliant cut stone. From here you can design and make your pendant or ring, solder your setting in place and then learn the techniques to set your stone.
