Eureka Secondary School belongs to a worldwide community of educational service, reaching back to the founding of the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy in 1827, now under the trusteeship of CEIST. The Sisters of Mercy first provided secondary education for girls in Kells in classrooms attached to the Convent in 1924. The school moved to the existing site at Eureka House in 1956. The school kept the name Eureka. It is assumed that the landlord who owned Eureka House, had a classical education and would have learned about Archimedes. From the beginning, the school provided a comprehensive and imaginative curriculum, and from an early stage taught Honours Mathematics, Physics, German, Art and Music at a time when these subjects were not commonly available in secondary schools. Our sensory room is also the space we use to host baby and toddler classes provided by both Little Legend’s Playhouse and also outside baby and toddler classes such as Moo Music. Us From this… School House interior…to this! When we moved into the Old School House in 2012, we could see the potential that the building had to offer. With over 40 years of our own combined experience in education, it seemed right to try to breathe new life into the educational history of the building, which had closed as a village school in the mid 1960s. We have always been interested in crafts and creative activities, including music and arts. We’ve always looked for new opportunities to learn and develop craft skills, and these have often been quite unplanned – the spontaneous purchase of a spinning wheel at a local auction for example, or the pile of bookbinding equipment we found in a local antiques store. The enjoyment gained from gaining mastery of a new skill or technique, particularly of a craft from times gone by, is a genuine pleasure, and one that we would hope to share with those who attend workshops at Old School Crafts.
