Beverley and Nigel Caleno own, run and are fully immersed in all aspects of Old Bank Studios life. We bought the Old Bank in Harwich in 2011. Having brought up and educated a family in Colchester, we were looking for a change of lifestyle and an opportunity to build on Bev’s Interior and Soft Furnishing business. Falling in love with this magnificent building and the unspoilt, faded charm of Harwich town, where beautiful architecture sits alongside maritime industry and stunning estuary views…….. we took the plunge. Bev very quickly opened her Textile Studio and it soon became clear that demand for her workshops and courses was going from strength to strength. Encouraged by this success, the decision was made to start inviting tutors from outside to deliver workshops; we were going to need more space! And so began a full restoration of the main banking hall; with it’s high ceiling, perfect light and ample space, our new Art Studio was created. As time went on a kitchen was installed in the former bank vault. Since our first Art Workshop in June 2013, we have successfully run hundreds of one day events and longer courses, attracting many of the country’s leading artists and tutors to work with us. Our reputation has spread far and wide and we regularly welcome students from the four corners of the UK, as well as further afield. On a personal level we both continue to explore and develop our own creativity and hold an annual exhibition of our work. Bev is firmly established as a Textile Artist and more recently a painter in Watercolour, whilst Nigel works in in many media, but is gaining a reputation as a Plein Air Oil Painter. We look forward to welcoming you to the Old Bank Studios very soon.

Originally from North Devon, I have lived and worked in various countries, particularly the Middle East and Mediterranean, and have been both influenced and inspired by the different cultures and architecture from my travels.  This combined with my keen interest in the environment, nature and the landscape, has provided me with the possibility of creating unique and individual pieces, whilst helping to preserve the natural beauty that surrounds us.   In 2003 I wanted these bright and cheerful mosaics to  withstand all weather conditions so through experimentation I developed this process.  My mosaic mirrors, panels and lamps and balls are designed for both indoor and all year garden display.   They can be used as wall panels – a feature among climbing plants, placed in a gloomy corner, floated on ponds and lakes, hung from trees or filled with solar lights all bringing a splash of colour to our dormant winter landscapes or creating a hint of “The Secret Garden’ beyond. I run a number of different courses and workshops every month to teach this uplifting and cheerful skill whether just as a day out with friends, learning a new hobby or wanting to  improve your skill.  Please contact me for more information.

Williamson Art Gallery & Museum is minutes from the heart of Birkenhead, on the edge of Oxton village. We opened to the public in 1928. The Williamson Art Gallery & Museum was funded through Birkenhead Borough Council by the philanthropists John Williamson, a Director of the Cunard Steamship Company Ltd, and his son Patrick Williamson. Based in our home town of Leeds, we are a nationally recognised community enterprise. Seagulls was founded by Cat and Kate around a kitchen table in 2002. We have three core aims: PEOPLE- to provide training, volunteering and employment opportunities for some of the most marginalised people across Leeds. PLANET- to divert waste materials from landfill for the benefit of the Leeds community, raising awareness for recycling and reuse, whilst reducing carbon emissions. PROFIT- to generate income and ultimately become a self sustaining enterprise. We seek to improve the environment through the recycling and reuse of paint materials. Alongside the creation of work for disadvantaged people and groups; in addition to selling low-cost high-quality paint products to the local community. So far we have diverted 4 million litres of paint from landfill. This is the equivalent to filling 50,000 household baths with paint! With people and the environment at the core of our business, we are well placed to educate people. For example, teaching people the importance of reusing and recycling unwanted household materials. We have built a unique and creative local enterprise whilst thinking outside of the box, both in our approach to business and people.
