What I remember most of my childhood is drawing, drawing all the time, every opportunity. My father loved music and loved to dance. We would dance together. My mother designed clothes and was a dressmaker and cake baker. My parents had arrived in England in 1954 from Jamaica and lived in the Brixton area. They lived on Concannon Road from around 1955 and moved to Railton Road in 1959 after they had wed at the church at Santley Street, around the corner of Concannon Road. Today I live by my painting and continue in my mothers’ and fathers’ legacy as a creator. I am open to producing works of art by commission. painting Painting is expression, a way of me talking with everybody else about how I feel, like a bluesman would play his blues. The whole thing is about feeling. Painting is blues. I paint those feelings that are from inside my head, from inside my soul. The spiritual part of all this is the heritage, the thing that comes from my ancestors, the ingredients that everybody talks about when they talk about the past, where we all come from, which is DNA, the genes. What I am doing is recording the memory that comes to me from nature, along with the music that came from West Africa and the Atlantic experience, all of it, and what I do then is give it form, give it some skin, textures and colours, the whole thing is like an umbilical cord that has not lost its life force, it is the whole nine yards. Jackie Burton Jackie Burton Born and raised in West Yorkshire, I took a trip to London in 1983 and have remained here since then. I am a black woman, a Christian and a mother. A retired Social Worker, I have a passion for children, young people and their families. Over the last 40 years I have had roles in church including youth leader and Pathfinder club leader as well as teaching in children’s Sabbath school & children’s church. It was my joy, to find the most creative and interesting ways to engage children and young people with so many varied learning styles. Over the last 12 years of my career I was a Team Leader for a local authority Fostering Service; having responsibility for facilitating training, assessing foster carers and placing children from diverse and challenging backgrounds with those carers. Life-long learning is part of who I am and I started becoming more interested in paper crafts when my now, 25 year old son was around 3 years old. We started to make cards for every occasion and stopped buying them from the shops. Paper crafts opened the door to so many other crafting pursuits and my love for crafting has only grown since then, from wedding decoration, decoupage & canvas art to knitting & simple sewing, I have done many and various and still do. Nothing pleases me more than sharing my love for something with others, and creative crafts is certainly one of those very many things. I have done this via children’s craft workshops; transforming spaces for Vacation Bible School (VBS); school holiday clubs; card making workshops for children and adults. If it includes crafting, I will consider it. Currently I am involved in a weekly Craft Café project where we are using hobby crafts to support people in our community who may be lonely, socially isolated or feeling low. Norman Mine Norman Mine Norman Mine is an Italian-born London based multidisciplinary artist whose practice encompasses visual art, acting and social work. Using autobiographical scenarios as a starting point, Mine's practice expands into fantasy and delusion and in his alter-ego, Dino Desica, an aspiring Italian actor who exists only through a video format, as "performance to camera", becoming an ephemeral simulation of the self. Mine's practice explores the infinite possibilities of the self, the authenticity and the structures of inclusion and exclusion in which it is constructed. For the past three years Mine has run creative workshops co-working with people of different generations, backgrounds, and abilities; developing a specific approach that unsettles the scenario in which participants perform to stimulate creativity and imagination as an opportunity to navigate within. CoCo has a team of staff and volunteers dedicated to building confidence, self-esteem and support positive lifestyle changes in young people via the conduits of education, sport and culture. Our staff have a background in mentoring and life coaching, project management, social inclusion, vocational training, and sports coaching. Our community based values are manifested in our training activities in the classroom, and our team activities which take place in positive open spaces and parks around Brighton and Hove. CoCo works with a variety of local organisations and stakeholders to achieve its goals and deliver its activities. For example, we work directly with youth clubs, Job Centre Plus, and youth/employment networks (Brighton’s Women’s Centre, the Chamber of Commerce, Brighton and Hove Youth Collective, and The Platform) to engage directly with young people that are interested in career planning, job search, our vocational courses, or sport team building activities. We also have close ties with sports clubs such as Hassocks Tennis Club, Preston Park Tennis Club, Pavilion and Avenue Tennis Club, Preston Panthers FC, Withdean FC and Patcham FC. With these clubs we organise team building events, joint sports days and in house training to develop soft and employability skills via sport. Our team has worked with hundreds of young people across Sussex to provide vocational training, mentoring and employability training. Our reach is growing and in 2017 hope to reach even more young people. Specifically, our qualified staff provide VET courses such as City and Guilds Level 1 Principles of Coaching Sport, Level 1-2 Employability Skills and Level 2 Travel and Tourism Destinations. We also provide Coaching and Mentoring Sessions with a qualified life coach, cultural activities and overseas team sports tours in Europe. Our aim is to support young people not in employment, education or training, aged 18-24, early school leavers now long term unemployed, general unemployed young people, and we place special emphasis on the participation of young women and the more socially excluded members of society. We use our links with local colleges, the local authority, community groups and youth networks to support young people into vocational training, improve their confidence and support them into further vocational training, work experience or employment. Behind every single course and workshop, whether in person or online, there is one main objective and that is empowerment. Through re-minding you of who you truly are, you become more confident as a person and more able to make any changes that you feel called or motivated to. This is powerful, for it is you who are recognising your needs and driving your results. Rather than any external force. True empowerment indeed! We all feel lost sometimes. I know it took me years to navigate my way back to who I am. Through that process and all the teaching and mentoring I have done since, I am suitably equipped to assist others on their own path. Like so many of us, the lessons and experiences that we have in this life enable us to help others. I am passionate about development. Knowing full well that without the experiences I have had to date I would not be the happy resilient individual that I am today, with a wealth of joie de vivre and a deep well of inner peace. A cunning combination! And one that I would not be without. It is therefore vitally important to me that I participate in ongoing professional development which supports all areas of my life. The Economics, Business and Enterprise Association (EBEA) is the professional subject association for everyone interested in the teaching and study of Economics, Business and Enterprise. As a registered charity the association seeks to: provide members with professional support promote the teaching of Economics, Business Studies and Enterprise encourage curriculum development in these subjects The EBEA has been supporting teachers since 1937 when it was formed by Economics teachers as ‘The Economics Association’. With the development of business education in the latter part of the twentieth century and a growing interest in encouraging enterprise, the association became the Economics, Business and Enterprise Association (EBEA). The EBEA has played a significant part in the development of economics and business education in the UK in terms of both curricula and pedagogy. The association publishes both a termly journal, ‘Teaching Business and Economics’ and a monthly e-newsletter. Journal articles provide both practical guidance and evidence-based ideas for professional development. As an archive going back many years, indexed by subject, they represent an important ‘body of knowledge’ fundamental to business and economics teachers’ scholarly activity (SoTL). In addition, over the years, the EBEA has published or contributed to all the key texts setting out the latest thinking on subject specific pedagogy and curriculum planning. The association supports the development of new teachers through its Initial Teacher Education Group, members of which come from all the main ITE PGCE providers. Each January the association runs an online new teacher conference full of tips and guidance for trainees. Trainee teachers receive a heavily discounted subscription, giving them access to guidance and resources specifically aimed at their professional development. Through our advocacy work on behalf of members, the association also plays a vital role in working with key stakeholders such as DfE, Ofsted, Ofqual and others to ensure the school curriculum keeps up to date with the needs of young people. Over the years, that has included both consideration of the business and economics curricula at a subject level as well as whole school economic and financial literacy and the development of employability skills. The important work of The EBEA is heavily reliant on voluntary input from members ready to share their knowledge and expertise for the good of young people. Without such unselfish work, we believe, the learning and development of young learners in our subject field would be all the poorer and the nature of a good business and economic education determined by distant policy makers and bureaucrats.
