LOOKING FOR: YA/NA FANTASY, SFF, HORROR, ADULT FICTION

John Baker (he/him) joined the Bell Lomax Moreton agency in 2019, cultivating a list shaped around his passion for science fiction, fantasy, and horror, though has lately also branched out into action/adventure fiction. John focuses on authors writing in the Adult, New Adult, and YA spaces. 

John leads the wider agency's film & TV desk, is the Secretary of the Association of Author’s Agents, and the co-chair of the AAA’s Bridge Committee. He also serves on the Kingston University MA Publishing Advisory Board.

Under the umbrella of speculative fiction, John is looking for fantasy, science fiction, horror, romantasy, or literary speculative fiction. He has built a reputation as a champion of underrepresented voices and stories, be it from creators hailing from the global majority and their diasporas or neurodiverse authors, and naturally gravitates towards this kind of storytelling. In short, if he’s never read a story like yours before, he wants to see it. 

Adult fantasy: John loves beefy epic fantasy, especially non-Anglo Christian-inspired. Give him an immersive world, a fresh magical or mythic system, and an exciting cast of characters and he’ll be happy. He is a broad church in the genre so loves a political fantasy, swords and sorcery, courtly intrigue, monster hunting and dastardly villains. John is keen to find an urban fantasy that feels fresh and fun and he’s a sucker for a heroic quest narrative. He’s also very open to fantasy that isn’t easily categorised, but it is playing in that world. John is keenly hunting for more historical fantasy, especially inspired by modern history. He’s had fun with mythological retellings in the past, but as ever, let’s make sure it’s shining the spotlight on new stories. He would also love fantasy that centres on types of relationships less celebrated in fantasy, such as established and secure married couples, or siblings. 

NA/YA fantasy: In this genre, most importantly, John wants to have a good time, whether it’s swoon-worthy kisses in lush ball gowns, or gruesome gore and monsters, so send him pacy, plot-filled adventures. He’d love more books that teenage boys would love: Skullduggery Pleasant forever! 

Romantasy: The thriving new romantasy genre comes with its own set of challenges, so John wants to know what makes your romantasy different; what will set it out from the (very crowded!) market. Give it completely barmy stakes, cool and unique new settings, or a love story that will make your jaw drop. To be clear, he’s happily sorted for a human person meets a fae creature in the spooky woods. Also, cosmic romance is the genre of the future. Give him romantasy in space. Easy. 

Horror: John and horror are old friends. He loves horror inspired by myth and folklore, subversive weird horror that leaves your eyebrows in your hairline, historical horror that pulls from ghastly true stories, and anything that you’ll be reading with the light on. He also loves a gothic element and is particularly looking for horror with a strong romantic throughline, fun YA horror, and female & NB horror authors. 

Science fiction: SF is coming back! And John has been shouting about that. He loves to see an adventurous found-family romp through space or an epic, crunchy space opera. Weird stuff: John wants books that will blow people’s minds and defy categorisation. This is hard to describe, but think Gideon The Ninth, The Library At Mount Char, This Is How You Lose The Time War. John loves a pitch that leaves the editors baffled but intrigued.

How do I attend?

EITHER -
CLASSROOM OPTION - Attend one of our scheduled classroom locations, completing your Introduction to Phlebotomy Course over 2 days. You will also complete your Advanced Training at the end of the first day and your Competency Training at the end of the second day.

Our Introduction to Phlebotomy and Advanced Phlebotomy Training Kits are supplied at no charge when booking our virtual classroom training option.
If you would like to add one or both of these kits to your classroom training option then these are available to add at time of booking. Our comprehensive training kits each mirror the same equipment and supplies used in the classroom and both include detailed video tutorials, allowing you to continue to practice and "hone" your skills after you have completed your practical training.

VIRTUAL CLASSROOM OPTION- Complete your theory training online at home or work, then join us for a one day Zoom session to complete your Introduction to Phlebotomy virtual classroom training, followed by your Advanced Training in the evening of the same day. You have the option to add a classroom-based competency session, awarding a CPD Accredited Geopace Certificate of Competency, at time of booking.

Our Virtual Classroom option includes two very comprehensive training kits - one for your introductory course and one for your advanced course. Using the Monovette system in aspiration mode - correct use and applications.

4 - IR Vein Detector:
Demonstration of the IR vein detector for assisting in detection of difficult veins.
5 - Veins in back of hand:
Detecting suitable veins in the back of the hand.
6 - POC testing:
Point of Care Testing - use of glucose meter to demonstrate a typical POC test procedure. Correct use and overview of other POC test devices.
7 - Using lancets (finger collection)
We look at the correct use of lancets for POC testing and whole blood micro-collection.
8 - Using lancets (heel collection)
We look at the correct use of lancets for neonatal blood spot tests (Guthrie Test).
9 - Capillary collection
Using glass capillary tubes for micro-collection. Correct use and handling.

What Can You Expect to Earn as a Dental Nurse? Compared to other caring professions, Dental Nursing is well paid and offers plenty of opportunity for continued training and development. This is great for those looking on a the long-term plan for their career and those who wish to work their way up the ladder through continued learning, experience & hard work. Trainee Dental Nurse salary for standard working week will be around £23,000 per annum. Average wage for a qualified Dental Nurses between £40,417 to £42,350 p.a.
When are the exams?
There are two exams:
1. Multiple choice theory exam. November and March.
2. Practical exam. January and June. 
Record of Experience (eROE)
To be eligible to sit your first exam, you have to complete your electronic Record of Experience (eROE). The eROE has to be submitted to your tutor by 31st Jan for March exam, and 31st August for November exam.

Master plant tinctures are sacred, natural extracts derived from powerful Amazonian plants, each carrying unique healing properties. 

Used traditionally in shamanic practices, these tinctures provide a gentle, yet profound way to heal, release emotional blockages, and restore physical vitality. 

When you purchase these tinctures, you're contributing to the preservation of indigenous traditions as the Medicine Woman who makes them donates 50% of the proceeds to the Shipibo community in Iquitos, the true guardians of these medicines. 

The medicine women who makes them, fasts for 2 days before preparing them to ensure there is no external energy influencing the tinctures. The tinctures are also buried with the plant they are made from for 2 weeks to help strengthen their essence. 

Instructions:
1. Dosage & Absorption
Empty Stomach for Optimal Absorption: Take your tincture on an empty stomach, ideally at least 30 minutes before eating or 2 hours after your last meal. This enhances absorption and allows the plant’s energy to work more directly.
Sublingual Method (Under the Tongue): Place the recommended number of drops directly under your tongue and hold them there for about 1-2 minutes before swallowing. This method allows the plant’s essence to enter your bloodstream more quickly and efficiently.
Swallowing & Following with Water: If needed, you can follow with a sip of water or herbal tea, but avoid strong flavours that might interfere with the plant’s subtle energy.
2. Dietary Considerations
Avoid heavy, overly processed, or highly stimulating foods (e.g., caffeine, sugar, alcohol, or spicy foods) before and after taking the tincture, as they may interfere with the plant’s effects.
Simple, grounding meals such as lightly cooked vegetables, whole grains, and herbal teas, support a clearer connection to the plant.
If fasting or eating lightly while working with the tincture, listen to your body’s signals and adjust as needed.
3. Setting an Intention
Focused Approach: Working with one plant tincture for 1-2 weeks with a clear intention allows for a deeper relationship with the plant’s wisdom. Reflect on what you’re calling in whether it’s emotional healing, clarity, protection, or insight.

PART 1 - THEORY ONLINE

Complete this part of your course online (eLearning Course) in the comfort of your own home or workplace.
Please allow 1-2 full days (approx. 12-16 hours in total) to complete this part of your course.
You do not need to complete this part of the course in one "sitting". Do as little or as much as you wish. Each time you log again exactly where you can start where you left off!
 
You must complete Part 1 before attending Part 2 below.
 
PART 2 - CLASSROOM
Attend in the classroom at the training location that you have selected.
Your classroom tutor will recap on the essential parts of your online course after which you will begin your practical sessions learning and developing the skills required to harvest and use Platelet-Rich Plasma in your treatment plan.

M01 – Course Overview

M02 – Qualifications – Levels & Thresholds
Understanding the range and applications of treatments at Levels 1 to 8. Equivalencies. Looking at each level and specific treatment types. Competencies at Level 4.


M03 – Culture & Diversity
Understanding culture and diversity within the context of a salon, including opportunities and challenges for aesthetic therapists. Diversity and inclusion. Principles of diversity.


M04 – History, Definitions and Roles
The origins of microneedling and development of PRP, evolution of treatments, types of equipment and range of applications. Historical perspective and modern day examples of PRP therapies.


M05 – Health & Safety & IPC
H&S legislation, Standard Precautions (for blood borne pathogens), Pathogen types, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Handwashing and Hygiene, Hazardous Waste Disposal (non-specific), Preventing Needlestick Injuries. A detailed look at viruses, bacteria and fungi. Handling clients with infectious conditions and infestations. Transmission modes. Sterilisation processes in the workplace, including autoclaves.


M06 – Regulatory Obligations
Pathways – employed, contracted and self-employed, Management of H&S at work, Local and national government laws and bylaws, DBS types, Record Keeping, Hazardous Waste Disposal (specific), Insurance and insurance types, Accident reporting, The Keogh Review, HEE guidelines, Professional bodies.


M07 – Professionalism & Effective Communication
Presenting a professional image, guidelines and recommendations. How to effectively communicate with your clients and colleagues, communication methods, communicating efficiently in consultation.


M08 – Consent
Understanding consent types and your client’s capacity to consent. The importance of valid consent. Consent frequency. Risk assessment. Storing consent documentation – looking at paper and digital/cloud. Consent and the law. Determining if consent is robust.


M09 – Environmental and Sustainable Work Practices
Sustainability in the workplace. Running an efficient salon (water efficiency, waste reduction, interior fittings). Advancements including digital options (clients and suppliers).


M10 – Anatomy & Physiology
A&P for collagen induction therapy. Veins, arteries and capillaries (phlebotomy overview). The integumentary system – structure and function. Microneedling – depths and penetration. The lymphatic system. The circulatory system. Skin as a defence barrier. Skin – functions and layers. Merkel cells, Langerhans Cells, Keratinocytes and Melanocytes. The epidermal-melanin unit. Fibroblasts and connective tissue. The effects of ageing. Skin changes over time. Skin rejuvenation including optimising cell function and increasing natural collagen. Inducing regenerative healing. The Fitzpatrick Scale. A detailed look at cell function, specifically melanocytes, keratinocytes and fibroblasts. Microneedling the skin, effects and collagen response. Wound healing – stages (haemostasis, inflammatory, proliferative and maturation). Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT). Topical applications to improve keratinocyte function. Topical applications to improve collagen synthesis.


M11 – Patient Management – Consultation & Examination
Pre-treatment and treatment consultations. Client Motives. Educating your client. Developing a consultation plan. Medical Records. Contraindications & Precautions – Relative and Absolute Contraindications in microneedling. Microneedling and anticoagulants. Side effects and treatment failure. Photo-documentation. M12 – Record Keeping
Key points and importance. Understanding how to retain records. Claims - Date of Discovery and Date of Knowledge.


M13 – Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) – Understanding the basics
Whole blood – composition. Platelets and growth factors (types and functions). What are platelets? Understanding platelet modes of action. Platelet Rich Plasma – preparation. PPP and PRP. PRP Activation and collagen response in vivo. Fibrin network formation. Dermal needle puncture - repair pathway. Examples of microneedling applications. Needle depths and facial skin thickness. Types of treatments – a case by case examination.


M14 – Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) – Harvesting and Preparation
Phlebotomy. Using correct needle size and anticoagulant. Understanding autologous treatment types with PRP. The treatment agent pathway. Whole blood processing. Harvesting good quality PRP - step by step procedure. Using a centrifuge. Centrifuge operation and management. Steps to minimise platelet trauma. First and second centrifuge processes. Understanding how a centrifuge works? Managing breakage and spillage.


M15 – PRP Treatment – putting it all together!
Client arrival, management, documentation, photography, examination, consultation, consent, treatment plan. Patient ID, where necessary. Referrals and when to refer. Seeking expert advice. Employment types – employed (PAYE), contracted, self-employed (freelance) - detailed look at each. Managing equipment and consumables. Compliancy. Pre-treatment guidance.
