This course will introduce you to the beautiful world of colour analogue photography. Taking as a starting point the work of contemporary photographic artists working with colour, we will discuss and explore theory as well as developing core skills essential for the capture and printing of your own colour images. You will learn how to correctly expose colour negative film and learn more about the characteristics of different types of film and the effects that they can have on an image. Within Stills’ darkrooms you will learn how to process your colour film by hand and print high quality analogue C-Type prints. Day 1 Morning: Colour Theory, Inspiration and Refresher for SLR Camera Controls During the morning we will be looking at contemporary photographers and artists that have used colour to inform their practice in specific ways. We will look at the ways in which colour revolutionized the artworld and vernacular photography. We will also look at basic colour theory, exploring which colours compliment each other and why. We will also refresh basic camera controls, load cameras and head out to the streets to shoot a roll of film. Afternoon: Colour Film Processing During this session, you will learn how to hand process your colour film. We will discuss the loading of the tank and the preparation of the machine to ensure correct processing temperature. We will look at different film types, why you may want to use them and the range of effects that can be produced. Day 2 Morning: Introducing the Colour Darkroom and Contact Sheets You will be introduced to Stills colour darkooms and become familiarised with the range of equipment you will be using. You will be taught how to set up your darkroom for printing, how the colour print processor works and how to print a contact sheet for viewing your negatives. Afternoon: Printing In the afternoon you will be expected to make a series of final C-Type prints. You will be shown techniques to improve your printing skills and produce the images you desire. This last session will allow you time to print with some one-to-one attention. We will discuss some printing techniques to help you get the most from your negatives. We will also have time at the end of the day to look back on all the work produced over the course and discuss it in relation to theory we learnt at the beginning. By the end of the course you will have: Learned more about colour theory and have a knowledge of contemporary artists working with colour photography Learned to process your own colour film Experimented with a variety of specialised darkroom printing techniques Printed contact sheets and a collection of colour photographs Feel confident in a colour darkroom using specialist equipment   Courses are subject to minimum enrolment. Please register early, within five days of the start date, to reduce the likelihood of course cancellation. If you have ever struggled to wrestle a quilt under your sewing machine, then this is the workshop for you! Come along and consider 3 ways of joining your blocks that allow you to quilt each block separately, prior to final assembly of your quilt. This is perfect for beginners and can be used to make a double-sided quilt.

This course is ideal for all, from beginners to confident makers. You will learn the basics of leather craft for accessories and be introduced to techniques including machine stitching on leather, hand finishing and hand cutting. You will also be working with the full spectrum of leather types from soft leathers and suedes to a hard sturdy veg tanned leather. This is a perfect introductory course to start your journey into leatherwork and bag making as you will experience the wide variety of tasks involved in the work. In order to complete your bag in a day we will use part pre-prepared components and the bag will be made from a ‘Hands of Tym’ pattern but do not fear there is still plenty of work for you to do. During the day you will be directed by your tutor Leathersmith and London College of Fashion Lecturer Georgie Tym to make one of the following bag - A fully lined ‘Turned Seam’ ‘T-Base’ mini Leather bucket bag with raw edge strap. The dimensions of the mini bucket bag are 185mm x 190mm x 110mm. Following a varied career in Accessories design and development across many roles and international brands I set up Hands of Tym in 2016. The courses I offer are suitable for all, from experienced to total novice. Come along to learn something new, and design and make your own leather bag in a day.

We will begin with a simple single stone grain setting before moving onto a traditional star setting and finally a row of five stones in a thread and grain style setting. During the day we will also look at considerations for grain setting as well as the preparation of tools and possible applications. This attractive and popular setting style allows for you to learn more advanced setting techniques that will take your skills to a new level. We will discuss how to lay out the stones within the setting and discuss fine tolerances. You will then prepare your ring for setting before you begin drilling and opening the channel and finally set the stones in place. By the end of the day you will have the knowledge needed to apply these advanced techniques to your own designs. IPAF training is the most widely recognised standard for Mobile Elevated Work Platform operators. These are commonly known as MEWP’s or Scissor Lifts and Cherry Pickers. MHA Training is a fully approved and registered IPAF member and we can deliver a wide range of courses. This can be done at our training centre in Warrington or On-Site at customer premises Nationwide. The International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) promotes the safe and effective use of powered access worldwide. Set up in 1983, IPAF is a non-profit organisation that represents the interests of member training companies. Over the years, IPAF has played a key role in promoting many of the design safety and testing procedures that are now established in the powered access industry. Companies such as MHA Training in Warrington are responsible for training for over 90,000 operators each year. Those who successfully complete their training at our centre in Warrington, or out On-Site nationwide are awarded the PAL Smart card. The (Powered Access Licence) is the most widely held and recognised qualification for mobile platform operators. The PAL Smart card is valid for five years and shows the machine categories that an operator has been trained on. It also features the holders photo and signature, and can be verified on their website. IPAF itself does not provide any training, it is provided by approved quality training centres like MHA Training. Approved training centres are regularly audited by IPAF, which ensures the highest standards are consistently met. Class sizes are kept small and courses generally last 1-2 days and are a mixture of theory and practical. To ensure success candidates must then undergo a 30 question multiple choice paper and a practical test. Course material is available in many languages and training centre’s receive regular updates. MHA Training was established in 2008 based at our training centre in Warrington, Cheshire. We provide an array of services On-Site also for clients around the North West in areas such as Manchester, Liverpool, Widnes, St. Helens, Runcorn, Wigan, Preston and Leeds. Over the years we have expanded and have instructors available Nationwide. IPAF E-Learning. IPAF’s new E-learning module is part of its full training programme for mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs). The E-learning module delivers flexibility and interactive tools, with the same emphasis on practical training. Together with supervised written and practical testing of operator skills. E-learning can lead to a PAL Card (Powered Access Licence) which proves that the operator has successfully completed the training and is able to operate MEWP’s safely. Benefits: Flexible. Trainees complete the theory part anytime, anywhere, on any device, at their own pace. Interactive. Engages trainees with games, quizzes, videos and simulations. Operator E-learning does not replace practical training. Trainees who complete the online session must still pass a supervised theory test with an IPAF centre like MHA training. Also must successfully complete a minimum half-day of practical training and testing before being issued a PAL Card as proof of successfully completed operator training. Lee Furniture offer a beginners course in Box Making. The tuition is one on one. This course is for the beginner interested in making furniture.  Throughout the day we will make a box (see images) in solid Oak/Ash (Timber dependant on stock) There is an option to upgrade the box to Walnut timber during the course!! The course is hands on and will be based around using tools and machinery to plane and join for your box, use of hand tools to include the correct use of: Marking out tools Planes Chisels Scrapers Power tools There will be demonstrations throughout the day including chisel sharpening, planing and cutting wood. Unlike courses of this type elsewhere, this is a making course, not just assembling pre-cut planed components, you will plane from scratch sawmill-provided timber.  At the end of the day you will have achieved the making of a solid oak box, and learned some of the techniques used in cabinet making. The Box is finished with modern style hinges and a oil/wax finish.. What's included in the price? Wood is included in the course for practising your new skills.  Tea and coffee included for the day. The exhibition is taking place in Scot-ART Gallery 1 on the 3rd floor of St Margaret’s House, 151 London Road, Edinburgh EH7 6AE from Saturday, 24 - Saturday, 31 May 2025 and is open from 11am-5pm each day. The exhibition is free to enter. We will be exploring how creatives balance making art they love with art they make a living from. The Talks usually last 30 mins, and the Tasters normally last an hour. Check the individual details for more information. There is a nominal fee of £5 towards the cost of materials payable for the Exhibition Tasters, and spaces are limited. You will learn how to size bangles, how to solder, texture the metal, cut out a charm, and also polish your designs. You will be provided with all the silver required to make two stacking bangles and a charm to accompany them. This is an excellent starting project for a beginner. For those with more experience, it is an opportunity to develop your skills further.
