We started work here in New Cross in the year 2000 when we were set up as St James Family Learning Centre by the Southwark Diocese Board of Education and the London Borough of Lewisham to address issues of inequality in education South London. Since then we have we have supported hundreds of families to have better chances in life by providing high quality early education and family learning activities. Over the years we have worked in partnership with Children’s Centres, local schools and other voluntary organisations to provide activities that promote lifelong skills and a love for learning. Today we are called New Cross & Deptford Families First and we are a not for profit limited Company (Company No. 07645531). We are also a registered charity St James and New Cross Gateway Trust (reg charity no. 1143836). Our Nursery is registered with and monitored by Ofsted, (registration number is EY493086). We continue to provide services to help parents and children to grow and achieve: educationally, socially and emotionally, by providing a safe space and access to enriching and stimulating activities. The house style is mindful, breath-led, alignment-focused, sometimes strong and dynamic, sometimes slow and deep. Our practise is all about connecting the body to the breath and the physical to the spiritual. We love playful and creative classes, building strength and flexibility whilst encouraging curiosity and self-care. We have everything you need to make your class comfortable and safe – mats and blocks are available, or you can bring your own. Hand sanitiser is provided on entrance and by the studio door and a rigorous cleaning schedule has been implemented. We want you to feel safe so that you can fully relax. All levels of students are catered for – we welcome total beginners and those that have practiced for years. Currently all classes need to be booked in advance via MindBodyOnline for Track and Trace facilitation and to reduce crowding at entrance. In the last two years, my love for gardening as a practical paid profession has evolved into a life raft, enabling me to slow down the frantic charge of anxious thoughts so that I can see them with a sense of safety and purpose brought about by the invitation and acceptance of being in nature and working with plants. I have developed Mindful Gardening, which has helped me mitigate stress, reap nature's health benefits, and learn how to entwine the gentle gift of being present with plants as my focus and inner well-being. By practising mindful gardening, I can care for and nurture the plants and soil outside, weed my own internal garden regularly, and keep a mindful eye on my inner and outer wellness. The Alamiyah School stems from a project which began in 2005 with a determined group of home-schooling parents who were eager to create a positive learning environment for their children; one that would foster not only a love of knowledge but give the children a moral framework and nurture each child’s unique genius. The project was subsequently joined by a group of educational professionals and evolved into the Alamiyah Pre-school. We registered as an independent school (Alamiyah School) in 2017 allowing us to cater for school age pupils. The school now caters for pupils of age 3-11 years till the end of the primary age range. The Alamiyah School is inspired by the Prophetic Tradition and will use a curriculum infused with the prophetic stories, arts and sciences. The Montessori approach to early years is the framework upon which the school is based, thus creating an educational experience based on ancient wisdoms and modern discoveries. The Montessori approach creates an environment that offers each child the opportunity to express and develop their individuality and their innate need to learn. It is based on the natural laws of human development (fitra) confirmed by scientific advances and is therefore perfectly in line with a prophetic model for education. Whether you are from the public or private sector, from a charity, a museum, art gallery or heritage organisation we can offer you training, facilitation and coaching so you can… Storytelling is all about communication. It’s inbuilt, so why not learn to use it to your advantage to turn ideas into actions and outcomes? We met at university at the tail end of the last millennium, on a theatre studies BA. Josh then worked with vulnerable adults for a housing association, whilst developing his skills as a storytelling performer in museums, festivals and schools. Lily continued post graduate studies at Central School of Speech and Drama and gained an MA at Goldsmiths, while devising theatre productions as a director. Our paths crossed again on a project with young actors in Mumbai where we discovered we enjoyed working together. On our return we started to deliver open storytelling workshops as a means to develop our product and explore its uses and applications. Initially, we thought storytelling was perfect for presentation skills and museum tours. Now we also use it to investigate and build understanding with individuals and in collaborative groups as well as to grow connections, values and relationships. Ben Joiner became one of the core team in 2014. We were drawn to his in-depth knowledge and expertise in voice and body-language and his gift to comfortably take people outside their comfort zone. Over the past couple of decades, we have honed our skills and our love of training and coaching. We have stayed curious, and use that curiosity to help us adapt and evolve how we use storytelling to the benefit of contemporary working life.
