I was suffering with anxiety very badly at the time, and calligraphy helped to bring a bit more calm in my life, relax and switch off. I kept learning, practicing and experimenting. 6 years down the line, I work as a full time calligraphy artist and teacher and I LOVE spreading the love of lettering and helping my students to master this wonderful skill.

Hello! My name is Asha and I am the creator and owner of Babooche Calligraphy. I specialise in custom calligraphy, illustration and stationery for weddings, special events and small businesses. Inspired by the sea and nature I have developed an organic feel to my designs which are “lovingly handmade, simple, natural and timeless”. Maggi and Sarah created two projects to engage teenagers during the summer holidays, encouraging creativity and the development of new skills. The pack included a hard-backed sketchbook with a workbook of suggested art based activities, also Derwent Arts kindly donated some drawing equipment. The second project included a fully illustrated instruction booklet, coordinated fabrics, ribbons, needles and threads to create a decorative length of bunting, which could be customised with applique lettering or imagery. The scope of these projects could reach beyond the original pack and the summer holiday period, inspiring children to consider further individual projects. The quality of the pack and its learning materials encourages young people to work independently and the workbooks encouraged recipients to explore their own personal projects. The packs also contain Crafts Council project ideas to inspire children and teenagers, and support material for those who may wish to embark on the Arts Awards scheme. ‘Recreate Make’ intend to develop an Arts Award offering in the near future. With the help of the West Cumbria Learning Centre, Maggi and Sarah were able to distribute projects to 38 young people across West Cumbria who it was felt would find them beneficial. We gave the packs out during the summer holiday of 2021 to help additional homeschooling ideas for the arts. They were given to children from Wigton to Whitehaven, the majority centred around the Workington area.

Coleraine Street Pastors was founded in 2014. Since then we have had four or five teams out every weekend in town centres and housing estates, pubs and clubs. All our street pastors are members of local Christian churches who Want to make a difference in their community Fulfil the personal specification Commit to the training programme Commit to one patrol per month OUT ON THE STREETS We wear blue uniforms with STREET PASTORS in luminous lettering, so we are easy to spot. On Friday evenings our Coleraine teams patrol the town centre and estates in Coleraine, the Heights, Ballysally, Millburn and Harpers Hill, also sometimes estates in Portrush. On Friday evenings, a team of Ballymoney street pastors also patrols in Ballymoney town centre and Riverside Park. We keep an eye out for anybody in need and are happy to connect with anyone who is out and about, particularly young people. We believe that our work helps to strengthen the community and make the streets safer. Late on Saturday nights, one team patrols in Portrush town centre and Kelly’s, while another team covers Portstewart town and the bars and clubs there, also looking out to keep people safe along the Promenade and the rocks We sweep up broken glass, pick up glass bottles, hand out flip flops and foil bodywarmers and help people to taxis. At times people are sick, upset, lonely, worse for wear or want to talk. We stay with them until they are ready to move or until further help arrives. We call the emergency services if needed. Our purpose is to be a reassuring presence on the streets, helping everybody be safer late at night. FOLLOW-UP HELP We carry information on a range of agencies that provide help of different kinds. Anyone can continue a conversation the next day by contacting the Street Pastor coordinator by phone or email. FOOTBALL PATROLS In 2016 we started occasional football patrols on Saturday afternoons, at the request of the Police, for matches that may be contentious. RESPONSE PASTORS Some of our experienced street pastors have been trained for the role of response pastors – volunteers who provide physical and emotional support in times of crisis. Whatever context they are in, street pastors offer reassurance, safety and support through listening, caring and helping. They work together with other partners to make communities safer.
